Dodgers, Pirates Washed Out

PITTSBURGH - MAY 12: Lightning strikes near PNC Park after a rain delay was issued at the start of the third inning between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Los Angeles Dodgers at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In an alternate universe one may have observed Dodger starting pitcher Jon Garland collect a two-out RBI single to right field in the second inning to plate Dioner Navarro, who had doubled, and stake himself to a 1-0 lead in Pittsburgh, but in the baseball universe nothing happened today as the game was officially called due to rain at the start of the third inning. This decision was likely influenced by the fact that both teams are traveling for tomorrow's games.

No makeup date has been announced. This might be a natural to put into the "schedule if needed category", but I suspect both the Pirates and Frank McCourt need whatever additional revenue might be generated from the gate of a makeup game.

Also, no word yet if the two nonexistent innings Garland "pitched" will count toward his incentive clauses or vesting option.

Tomorrow's game: 7:10 P.M. in Los Angeles with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Probable starters are Joe Saunders and Clayton Kershaw.

Why didn’t those asshole Pirates give us a day game for get away day when they knew we had to come back to LA?

by Mike Dennis on May 12, 2011 8:41 PM PDT reply actions

From Ken Gurnick

at mlb.com, raising the same objections made in the comments here.

“They should have played [this game] during the day,” Garland said, echoing complaints from both clubhouses that the postponed game should have been scheduled for an afternoon start with both teams traveling and no travel day provided.

I don’t get why this can’t be made up when the Pirates come to town for their series. If it’s a revenue issue, give them the home gate. If it’s a fairness issue, well we’re stuck playing the Angels 6 games a year while the Padres get the Mariners 6 times every year. So we already have fairness issues. We can’t just say fuck it for one game and do the easy thing instead of the complicated thing?

by Mike Dennis on May 12, 2011 8:47 PM PDT reply actions

I suspect there is no avenue for changing the schedule once it’s made before the season starts. If they allow the Dodgers and Pirates to change it on a whim (whether the original is fair or not) then every team should have that right. It would tend to mess up the TV schedules, affect revenues, etc.

Bottom line, suck it up and play the schedule as originally drawn up.

Make up days are another matter of course.

Do the chair know we gonna look like some punk-ass bitches out there?

by mleadman on May 12, 2011 8:57 PM PDT reply actions

I understand the first part, but the schedule makers shouldn’t have fucked it up to begin with. In the next CBA since they already have tons of rules about schedules how about adding one where if one team has to travel over 500 miles the next day, that game needs to be a day game. Like I understand if we were just going to Philly next okay whatever. But anything like us going back to LA needs to be a day game.

As for makeups, I just don’t get why they have to make it difficult and can’t just have us play a double header when the Pirates come to town.

by Mike Dennis on May 12, 2011 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree about the original point which is this should've been a day game in the first place

Of course, obviously schedulemakers have no clue about an hour by hour forecast on any given day months in the future from when they are making the schedule. But it would have worked out better coincidentally if they had been kinder to the Dodgers travel schedule, as most teams do, and given them a getaway day today. It’s not like they had any more fans in the seats for the night game.

I believe the home team schedules the actual game

and the Dodgers are not only team that has to do this, what about the teams that play the late games on Sunday back East and then have to fly out that night.

The Pirates certainly had the right to make the schedule any way they want and they had to fly out to Milwaukee (albeit a much shorter trip) but they decided to play a night game anyway.

by bhsportsguy on May 12, 2011 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

of course they had the right and yah they are the ones that decide

I think the point is they didn’t have to. :-)
I know a lot of getaway games are scheduled that way because they benefit the home team, and if they benefit the road team too that’s fine for them. But sometimes home teams are better about it. Oh well, again, who knew what the weather would be like on this date. Could’ve been worse earlier in the day (but if it was, they could still have played, with more wiggle room).

Speaking of schedule, i thought i noticed we play the Tigers again at home and a 4 game series in STL just like last year.

by DodgersKings323 on May 12, 2011 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

We seem to always have 4 game series with the Pirates and Cardinals every year, usually in their parks too.

by Mike Dennis on May 12, 2011 9:03 PM PDT reply actions

Oh well, at least they didn't have a huge lead washed away

like whoever it was the other day that had like a 7-0 lead (including a grand slam) washed out entirely. That had to have been more maddening.

At least I didn’t miss anything by being away this evening!

Agent Scott Boras tells Y! Sports he has no plans to negotiate a long-term extension for Eric Hosmer with the Kansas City Royals.

hah hah. What a ... Boras.

Wasn’t Hosmer just called up for the first time a week ago? Sheesh.

Yeah

Insanely early for this talk. Does Boras mean no plans ever? If so, not bright to burn bridges so soon.

by silverwidow on May 12, 2011 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Guess he is saying he won’t give them an Evan Longoria kind of deal

by Mike Dennis on May 12, 2011 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess I read this differently. I read it as he has no “current” plans to negotiate a long-term extension. Just like I have “no plans” for lunch tomorrow. But I may come 11AM.

by Xeifrank on May 12, 2011 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Here is the quote from Rotoworld

Scott Boras, the agent for Eric Hosmer, told Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports Thursday that he has no immediate plans to discuss a long-term extension with the Royals.

So the “immediate” part was left out of the twitter post.

by Xeifrank on May 12, 2011 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

But why is this even coming up now at all? is my question

by underdog on May 12, 2011 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah did a little research and sounds like this stemmed

from a local sportswriter.

Kansas City Star columnist Sam Mellinger on Thursday suggested the Royals try to lock up Hosmer to a deal that would buy out his arbitration years and include options for his first three free-agent seasons

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-boras_hosmer_royals_contract_51211

So Mellinger started it, pointlessly. And Boras chimed in, in kind. ;-)

San Jose will try to make their first Stanley Cup Finals in their 18 year history

Vancouver has only been to two Stanley Cup Finals, the last one in 1994 and has never won a Stanley Cup in 39 years of existence.

Boston as one of the Original 6, has the second most Stanley Cups for an American team with 5, Detroit has 11. They have not won a Stanley Cup since 1972 and have not made the Finals since 1990.

Tampa Bay is the team that has been to a Finals most recently, in 2005, in which they also are the team that has won a Cup the most recently in 2005.

by bhsportsguy on May 12, 2011 9:44 PM PDT reply actions

The last two paragraphs make no sense to me. Could be that it is late and I need sleep or that I read this as Detroit is not an American team and in the last paragraph that 2005 is the most recent year that a team has been to the finals. Of course it is hockey.

by Xeifrank on May 12, 2011 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Detroit has the most Stanley Cups for an American team, with 11.

Also forgot to say “Go Sharks!” ;-)

I like Vancouver too so I would root for them if they won the series but Sharks have never been to the Cup finals so it’s time!

tonight in Vegas.

Hoffmann hit his 7th (!) (meaningless) HR!

Antonini (Hu?) didn’t pitch that well for Chattanooga.
