Looking Back On The Dodgers First 40 Games

Saturday's Dodger loss to Arizona was their 40th game of the season; so far the team has played 20 games and home and 20 games on the road. While the loss pushed their record to 19-21, here's a look at the Dodgers' splits through 40 games with 20-20 hindsight.

Home (10-10) Runs R/G 2B 3B HR BA/OBP/SLG OPS
Dodgers 56 2.80 30 2 10 .240/.290/.337 .627
Opponents 94 4.70 30 1 22 .255/.321/.398 .719
Road (9-11) Runs R/G 2B 3B HR BA/OBP/SLG OPS
Dodgers 88 4.40 26 3 17 .270/.344/.388 .733
Opponents 76 3.80 35 6 17 .252/.320/.400 .720

Ted Lilly gets the start today for the Dodgers, hoping to buck a trend. In his last six starts, Lilly has given up four, zero, five, one, five, and two runs. Lilly has pitched six innings in each of his last three starts. Lilly has yet to give up a single to Chris Young in 18 career plate appearances, but Young is hitting .375/.444/1.000 off Lilly thanks to four doubles and two home runs. Melvin Mora has faced Lilly more than twice as much as any other Diamondback, and is just 3-for-31, but he does have 12 walks.

Former USC Trojan Ian Kennedy makes the start for Arizona today. Their opening day starter has pitched well this season, with a 3.23 ERA, 15 walks and 45 strikeouts in 53 innings. In his last four starts, all quality starts, Kennedy has allowed five total runs, and has a 1.47 ERA in 7.67 innings per outing, though he has just one win to show for it.

I don’t really know 6 through 9 at all.

Last night at Gabes, we were speculating on whether or not the Dodgers would use the Castro-Miles-Carroll infield, and came to the conclusion that if they did, likely Sands would still start since they needed power.

Nope.

That is some lineup.

by Eric Stephen on May 15, 2011 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Sitting Uribe means they sit their best defensive infielder.

by Michael White on May 15, 2011 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Against a lefty where in theory more balls would be hit to him. But, they do have Gwynn out there.

Gwynn against a lefty?

Thats dumb

No, no. Lilly is a lefty. Better defense when the D’Backs pull him.

Looks like getting taken out for Navarro was the last nail in the coffin for Sands.

Looks like give-away day. Not really trying to win, just resting everybody and giving the bench players (sic) playing time.

We (the family) were supposed to be going to the Aces Cubs game in Reno today

but I could not bring my self to make the 3 hour one way drive in snow, then sit in a wet stadium with 25-30 MPH winds, to see those teams play.

NOt like the Aces were playing the Isotpes or anything

What’s the pythag vs. actual record at home?

Seems incredibly fortunate to have the record LAD does

by Michael White on May 15, 2011 10:22 AM PDT reply actions

Of course, all of you out there realize that there are five men playing today that should be sitting on the bench, if not for injuries and very, very poor performance.

Baseball is a game, and games are supposed to be fun.

by iiidown on May 15, 2011 10:23 AM PDT reply actions

Furcal activation

will mean the end of Mitchell. That’s the easy one.

Blake, as Eric mentioned, could result in Sands getting demoted or preferably, IMO, Gibbons DFA.

Castro is probably going to stick around the entire year.

Man, this team sucks.

by Michael White on May 15, 2011 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Interesting thing to me is if/when Thames is ready, assuming Sands gets demoted for Blake, do they DFA Gibbons, or decide at that point to DFA Castro.

Although, who am I kidding, somebody else will be on the DL at that point anyway. These things always work themselves out.

by Eric Stephen on May 15, 2011 10:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Castro notwithstanding, I would not cry with a Gibbons DFA

either.

All you need to know about this team right now

Runner on third, one out, we voluntarily send up navarro and gibbons

My friend who knows nothing of the dodgers was laughing at the radio description of the guy being sent up in the most important ab of the game… “hitting .100… Having ALL KINDS of problems just seeing, let alone hitting a baseball…”

And if sands is going to be hit for in that spot by a backup catcher, just send him down.

As much as I overall approve of Mattingly's job this year given what he's had to work with

yesterday was not his finest hour (or inning). You let Barajas bat, period. End of story. Then you send up Gibbons. Then see where you are at that point. It was a double-fail and he’s been rightly reamed for it in all directions. But am hoping he’ll learn. And one thing in his defense is… what he’s had to work with and how much offense has struggled.

If you are GM...

and you are not allowed to make a trade, but you can sign DFA’d players, and you can call up and DFA players as normal, what moves do you make over next month to make this team better? You are not Ned, you are you.

First of all, I:
Hope Raffy and Blake come back. That’s one. ;-)
Okay, after that:
I DFA Gibbons and call up Trayvon Robinson. (Separate from Sands “issue”)
I DFA Castro and call back up IDJ Jr.
I DFA Navarro and call back up AJ ellis
I probably send Sands back down when Thames is healthy then call Jerry back up later
Starting rotation is fine but if anyone gets hurt outside of the Ely’s of the world I give Rubby a shot to at least give fans a brief jolt awake.
I see how Guerra does and also consider Lindblom and other minor leaguers who may not be on 40 man roster just yet.
As manager, when I can go back to having lineup (around the horn) of Sands/Thames/Loney, Uribe, Raffy, Blake, Ethier, Kemp and Gwynn (Thames/Trayvon), Barajas/Ellis, I have a much more competent lineup and bench without even making a trade.

Not sure who is on the waiver wire for added depth but that’d be next.

agree with all that...except..

I DFA Gwynn or Loney when Thames is healthy.

Loney has no trade value, should not be part of the 2012 Dodger team, so I’d have no problems cutting him loose now. Dodgers are not going anywhere this year anyways.

But an easier (and cheaper) guy to cut loose is Gwynn.

by Joey Joe on May 15, 2011 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

my ideal 14 man with what the Dodgers currently have..

SS – Furcal
1b – Blake
RF – Ethier
CF – Kemp
LF – Sands
2b – Carroll
3b – Uribe
C – Barajas

Bench – Trayvon, Thames, Navarro, DeJesus, (Loney – i guess he doesnt have to be DFA right now…but definitely moved to the bench)

by Joey Joe on May 15, 2011 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't cut Gwynn he has value and really isn't that expensive

he’s already got defensive value and isn’t a terrible hitter which puts him ahead of several guys right there imho…

Well if you do watch it you can skip each time the last 5 in our line up are making their trip to the plate. Note I didn’t say “hitting.”
That should save you from wasting a fair amount of time, anyway.
