A Look At The Dodgers Bullpen & Inherited Runners

Mike MacDougal allowed three inherited runners to score on Sunday, but he has been above average this season in terms of allowing inherited runners to score.

In the ninth inning of Sunday's contest with the Padres, Mike MacDougal entered the game in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and one out. Up to that moment, MacDougal had allowed just one of nine inherited runners to score, but unfortunately for Hong-Chih Kuo's ERA, MacDougal let all three runs score on Sunday.

Using the Baseball Prospectus Run Expectancy Matrix, we can find out the average runs scored each inning after every base-out situation.  For instance, having the bases loaded and one out yields an average of 1.5514 runs from that point forward in the inning. So, in MacDougal's outing, he allowed 1.4486 runs more than the average on Sunday.

Here are all the situations this season so far with runners inherited by Dodgers relievers this season:

He’s already making $13 million this season with two arb years. Gotta think he’ll get at last $35 million over those last two arb years, then it’s north of $20 for all FA years.

If it’s 5 years, it’s gotta be at least $95 million, if not more.

by Eric Stephen on May 2, 2011 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, i was basing it on 13, 15, 17, 19, 21 as a rough estimate. Suppose if he bumps it up 2mil per year he’d get to your 95 total.

by G.Scott on May 2, 2011 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Might as well round it up to $100. Then add one more year. 6/120?

by kinbote on May 2, 2011 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

That would seem to eliminate the purpose of signing him long term as the Giants would then be taking on all the risk without receiving a discount.

No Rafael Furcals were hurt in the making of this video.

by G.Scott on May 2, 2011 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll take $150 of my own wallet to sign him for 6 years. That’s way more than $120.

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

by Nolij on May 2, 2011 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

CC got $23 per year, Lee got $24 per year; that’s the rate for top of the line starters.

At $23m per, that’s $92 million for the four FA years, meaning they got the final two arb years for $28 million, or between $7-15m less than he could get through arb.

The answer to is it worth the risk? As always…maybe. :)

Lincecum has as many CYA as those two combined

by Tommy Blackjack on May 2, 2011 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

unless he represents 1/5 of your payroll, then it’s also about risk management. Cost of his contract, his projected value over the life of the contract, and the “Oh Shit” plan have to be considered. If he blows out his arm this year because he’s again throwing harder than he was before (including his offspeed pitches), are they willing to punt the seasons for the rest of his contract/go at it with a 80mil payroll?

Just sayin. If I don’t get him for less than $20mil per year, I don’t see the point.

So what this is telling me is that Hawksworth is good at not letting inherited runs score

and Jansen is not? I guess that’s because his April 22 appearance was fucked

Yes

mostly because if he comes in with inherited runners, I assume it’s with 2 outs in the 8th. He’s plenty good at letting his own runners score.

Meh.

A few funny moments but mostly seemed like weaker Shrek to me.
But to be fair I watched it on TV not fully paying attention to every moment… why?

Met's awful season continues

Top pitching prospect Jenry Mejia goes down
Jenrry Mejia (P) NY-N – AAA 5/2/2011
Mejia has a complete MCL tear in his right elbow, the New York Daily News reports. Mejia will of course seek a second opinion, but surgery is almost a certainty. Mejia had been doing pretty well before the injury at Triple-A Buffalo, with a 2.86 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 28.1 innings.

It makes one joke funnier at least.

by regfairfield on May 2, 2011 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

The Mets did with Mejia what some have been suggesting with Rubby. At 20 years old in 2010 he was their top pitching prospect, they put him in the bullpen instead of letting him percolate.

that is today’s LOSING lineup. I think Phil will back me up on that one! :)

Nice that Qaude is going to let Pena work through his troubles by leaving in him against Clayton.

The original Babar book is horrible. You start reading it thinking it’s a cute book about a talking elephant what wears pants, and you find yourself being propagandized by a nineteenth century imperialist. Most offensively, it came out in the 1930’s, after that was less fashionable.

However, the tv shows are awesome because IT’S A TALKING ELEPHANT WHAT WEARS PANTS!

A previous post said something about Dar Bar being the “188-pound grandson of a Korean grandfather and a Japanese grandmother”. Most people have two of each (grandparents).

by berkowit28 on May 2, 2011 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I finally decided

that what they were trying to say is that Dar Bar has one Asian parent and that that parent is 1/2 Korean, 1/2 Japanese.

Was looking at the Midwest League pitching leaderboards and mostly everyone is 21-22 Lee and Gould really stand out as guys born in late-ish 1991. Awesome!

Clayton has been the only teen ager to ever be successful for the Loons. Once Baldwin tears up Ogden and gets promoted we will have four:)
