Silver Lining: Injuries Have Provided Opportunity For Dodgers Bullpen
To say the Dodgers are battling injuries is an understatement. They currently have eight players on the disabled list, and it looks like two more are out today. Both Juan Uribe, who strained his left hip flexor Friday night, and Aaron Miles, who missed the last two games with a sore rib cage, are out of today's lineup. It is unknown whether or not they are available to pinch hit if needed. If Uribe and Miles aren't available, the Dodgers' bench is down to Tony Gwynn and Dioner Navarro.
Four of the eight disabled Dodgers are relief pitchers, but the ones who are active -- no, not you Lance -- have picked up the slack. Here are the Dodger bullpen numbers in may for the seven current members of the bullpen:
| Current Dodgers Bullpen In May | |||||||
| Reliever | IP | H | R | BB | K | ERA | WHIP |
| Guerrier | 8.1 | 8 | 2 | 4 | 8 | 2.16 | 1.440 |
| Jansen | 6.0 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 9 | 0.00 | 1.000 |
| MacDougal | 6.0 | 7 | 2 | 4 | 5 | 3.00 | 1.833 |
| Guerra | 3.0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0.00 | 0.667 |
| Elbert | 2.2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 0.00 | 0.375 |
| Troncoso | 1.0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 | 0.000 |
| Cormier | 3.2 | 6 | 4 | 0 | 2 | 9.82 | 1.636 |
| Totals | 30.2 | 27 | 8 | 11 | 32 | 2.35 | 1.239 |
Five different Dodgers have recorded a save this month, including Jonathan Broxton and Vicente Padilla, who are both on the disabled list.
Lineups
With all the injuries, the Dodgers starting rotation has been pretty much a rock all season. Jon Garland, today's starter, is the only one to miss a start this season, and he only missed one, back in April. Garland, who pitched for the White Sox for eight seasons and was a big part of their World Series win in 2005, has pitched five straight quality starts. He has a 3.24 ERA in 25 innings over his last four starts, but is 0-2 because the Dodgers have only scored six runs while he has been in the game during that span.
Jerry Sands gets a start today with the left-handed Mark Buehrle on the mound, and Sands is playing left field. Andre Ethier is today's designated hitter, getting the day off without the day off that Matt Kemp received Friday night. Jay Gibbons is in right field in place of Ethier. Last night's hero Russ Mitchell gets his third straight start, playing third base today.
Adam Dunn, the primary DH for Chicago, is making his third start of the season at first base today.

Man, they showed where Mark Langston “struck out” Tino Martinez in the ’98 World Series. Perfect pitch, horrible call — Grand Slam.
people in SD are still pissed about that.

What's happened to Miles?
He’s out of the lineup again (hence Castro). This is now the third (fourth?) game Miles has missed. Something must be wrong, but I don’t recall anything having been reported. Did I miss it?

OT
This is a great Dykstra article from almost 20 years ago:
Do the chair know we gonna look like some punk-ass bitches out there?
Josh Johnson to the DL
Johnson said he has felt discomfort in the shoulder “pretty much the whole year,” but was always able to work out the stiffness in his warmup tosses. Such wasn’t the case on Thursday, though, when he threw in his normal, between-starts bullpen session. After that, he decided to go to the coaching staff and let them in on the problem for the first time.
“It took everything I had to go and say something,” Johnson said. “It’s just kind of the way I am, the competitor I am. But, once I did it, it almost felt better, like something lifted off my shoulders. I’m kind of at peace with it. Now I can get it right and get back to feeling good like I was at the beginning of the season.”
Rats, didn't realize it was an early game. Will have to watch later on "tape".
That lineup is okay under the circumstances (i.e., Uribe being out, not to mention Furcal still out) and sigh, even Miles being out, which means they have no choice but to use Castro. But that’s the one glaring black hole, last night’s heroics notwithstanding.
What’s the latest on Raffy’s knee report? Ok for Sunday?
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
