Ethier, Barajas Sit Out Opener In Houston

It's not exactly Yogi Berra and Jackie Robinson, but that's a pretty sweet photo.

As the Dodgers M*A*S*H unit opens a series in Houston against the Astros, without Andre Ethier or Rod Barajas tonight, and with Jamey Carroll getting a rare day off, our thoughts turn to others around the web.

It’s not necessarily Carroll's personally that puts him here, but the type of player he represents. Now that David Eckstein is relaxing at a beachfront condo somewhere in Middle-Earth, Carroll is the best example of a scrappy middle infielder. And, man, those guys tend to foul off 12 pitches before fisting a pitch over second for an RBI single. Carroll stands in for the entire genre.

Lineups

Clayton Kershaw faces Bud Norris. The good news is that, for now, neither Ethier nor Barajas will be placed on the disabled list, per Tony Jackson of ESPN Los Angeles.

James Loney is batting third for the first time this season.

Dodgers Astros
SS Furcal
CF Bourn
2B Miles SS Barmes
1B Loney RF Pence
CF Kemp 1B Lee
RF Gibbons LF Michaels
LF Sands 3B Johnson
C Navarro
2B Hall
3B Mitchell C Quintero
P Kershaw
P Norris

I understand that. My point was, if they’re really taking it slow with him, I don’t think he’s going to play this year outside of maybe an appearance late in the year to build 2012 season ticket excitement.

Jose Bautista

has an OBP of .503.

There are 30 of 185 qualified players in MLB with a slugging percentage that high this season.

by Eric Stephen on May 23, 2011 4:19 PM PDT reply actions

If you turn all of Bautista’s home runs into outs, he would still be hitting .221/.398/.287 this season, an OPS exceeded by only these four Dodgers:

Kemp
Ethier
Carroll
Sands

If you take away all of Bautista’s hits, he’d still have reached base 39 times, a number only beaten by five Dodgers.

But the ingredients (at least at the one in Hermosa Beach that I worked at) were always fresh, stored properly, delivered every other day, and cooked to order. We were a good store and I made decent money doing it, I just couldn’t stay anymore (2004-2008) after my sister started working there and making her way through the kitchen staff.
