Minor League Report 5/29/11 : Zach Lee surrenders his crown

Player of the Day: Nobody was worthy, evidently our minor leagues suck when Brandon is on vacation. What a crap feast.

AAA  -   Isotopes win 6 - 5 behind Eveland, who gave up three runs in six innings. Home runs by Marcus Thames and Trayvon Robinson propelled the offense. It was the first rehab game for Thames, and for Trayvon his 2nd home run in as many games. Ivan DeJesus continues his hot hotting with his 3rd straight multi-hit game, giving him eight hits in his last fourteen at bats.

AA - Chris Withrow took the loss giving up five runs in six innings. Just another lack luster performance by the one time pitching prospect. He didn't have much going for him, giving up six hits, three of them doubles, while walking four and striking out only four. Silverio, Wallach, and Pedroza all had two hits but the offense only plated three runs, losing 5 - 3. Kyle Russell struck out two more times, giving him six strikeouts in his last twelve plate appearances after his hot streak ended four games ago.

A+ -Aaron Miller pitched as bad as you can pitch and still win a game. Padilla got a rehab start, went two scoreless innings then  watched Aaron Miller try to give away a 5 - 0 lead. Miller pitched two good innings before encountering his troubles. His final line was four innings, seven hits, four runs, five walks. So if you add that up, you will notice he had twelve baserunners in only four innings of work. Songco and Denker both hit home runs to ignite the winners to that 5 - 0 lead.

A - Wonderkid Zach Lee forgot to tell his opposition how great he was, as they knocked him out in the 1st inning. It was Lee's first start since he took a few weeks off for tender pitching parts. Down 6 - 0 after one inning, the Loons succumbed meakly 7 - 2.

A- 2nd Game - Also lost 4 - 1.

no one deserved player of the day?

It sounded like Trayvon and Dejesus had decent games.

Also I see Preston Mattingly is back on the Loons…LOL

He should take a snapshot of his line right now (.333/.333/.667), it might be the only time ever that he looks like he knows what he’s doing.

tray’s shot was to right and was no cheapie. Ivan also had two hard hit balls that were tracked down by the left fielder

Thames hit an absolute bomb to center. as a kinda cool aside, thames was wearing his blue Dodger 33 helmet and wore 49. The helmet thing is interesting, but the number was kinda surprising since Dishman is/was on vacation and hough was there….wearing 16.

it rained off and on but the defense didn’t seem to notice. Dee made a couple of very strong plays, including one up the middle that should have been a hit but he made a nice play to cut the runner down.

lastly, in case anybody is wondering about old friend joe thurston- he’s playing for the zephyrs and is still lazy. he really didn’t run out ground balls and played every bit his age.

Getting on a plane right now

So there won’t be any hot/cold players of the week today, but i will have the minor league stats for the month of May a little later this week which will basically take it’s place

Sounds like everyone had fun at the BBQ yesterday…too bad I had to miss it! Guess they’ll have to be another one

Lo-A turned a triple play in the 2nd game… Ho hum nothing to see here.

That’s the thing with Minor League games: There’s no such thing as a standard 3-1 game!

Baseball is a game, and games are supposed to be fun.

Worth noting

Joc Pederson made his single A debut last night.

Looks like he will be skipping Ogden entirely. A bit of a surprise given his age (born 4/19/1992), draft slot (11th rd), and signing date (8/16/2010), but maybe not given his substantial signing bonus ($600k).

Scott Schebler was pimped more and also older, yet he’s probably going back to Rookie ball. Strange.

uribe

Does anyone know when Uribe is supposed to return from the DL?. I was hoping that everyone would be back accept the pitchers which I know will be longer.

Do the Dodgers want him back? Uribe’s not hitting any better than Aaron Miles is, and Aaron Miles is just so, so, gritty.

by Tripon on May 30, 2011 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m pretty sure we’re at our ‘Gritty’ limit. Too much grit in the machinery is not good.

Baseball is a game, and games are supposed to be fun.

by iiidown on May 30, 2011 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, they want him back.

He’s far superior defensively to Miles, so that alone is an upgrade. And unlike Miles he has the ability to hit more than singles.

and walk

did I just say that about Uribe? Yes, yes I did.

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.

Cricket

Apologies to those who may have read my near-identical comment over at DT (there’s another cricket follower there), but it’s just to much to keep it to myself and DT.

England just won the most amazing, improbable victory over Sri Lanka in their first Test Match in Cardiff. It’s hard to explain the scale of the thing to those who don’t know cricket, but this was one of those “dull” matches that was going nowhere but a draw without result, mostly due to bad weather which lost a day and a half (out of 5 days) to rain. The two teams seemed fairly well matched, with Sri Lanka making 400 runs in their first inning, and England doing somewhat better, making 496 runs before choosing to “declare” – artificially closing their own innings with still 5 men yet to play at the beginning of the last day, after another 4 hours lost to rain. The reason for doing this is that, to win, you have to put the opponents all out (10 outs) twice. It’s not good enough just to make more runs than them – you have to put them out twice, so tactically, a team captain often has to choose when he thinks is the right moment to declare, to give his team enough time before the end of the match to bowl out the other side and then make up any run deficit. Sometimes that allows the other team enough time to win, but that was never going to happen here.

There hardly seemed any point with only a few hours left. You have to expect that any team can make at least 200 runs before getting all out. So there was nowhere near enough time left to get Sri Lanka all out for that 200+, and then also have time for England to play their own second innings and make another 100+ runs themselves. But what actually happened was a spectacular collapse by Sri Lanka – all out for 82. (Apparently, they’re saying on the BBC now, this was the 10th quickest all out in the entire history of international cricket since 1870 or whenever it started.) England win “by an innings” (meaning they didn’t have to bat a second time themselves) and 13 runs. Just amazing. Nothing like this since the “Botham test” in Headingsley (Leeds) in 1981. I heard that one too (I was in England then.)

This was the dullest match until the last few hours (although admirable in that England finally has a batsman who can just stay in very slowly accumulating runs giving no chances of getting out). There’s nothing comparable in any other sport. What a turnaround!

Honestly starting to wonder if there's an arsonist afoot

even if it’s not actually McCourt burning documents, something smells fishy. Or as Ralph Wiggum would say, tastes like grandma.
