Dodgers Week 12 In Review: The Offense Is Offensive

Dee Gordon and the Dodger offense scored all of 12 runs in six games this week.

The Dodgers inspired no confidence this week, losing five games before eeking out a win on Sunday. They began the week six and a half games behind San Francisco, and despite their 1-5 week the Dodgers only lost one game in the standings.

Dodger Batter of the Week: Matt Kemp takes home the award once again, in what is becoming a weekly award for The Bison. Kemp had five of the 13 Dodger walks this week.

Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Hiroki Kuroda narrowly beats Clayton Kershaw, thanks in part to Kuroda having two starts to Kershaw's one during the week.

Week 12 Record:  1-5
12 runs scored (2.00 per game)
30 runs allowed (5.00 per game)
.158 pythagorean winning percentage

Season Record:  32-41
275 runs scored (3.77 per game)
315 runs allowed (4.32 per game)
.438 pythagorean winning percentage (32-41)

Star-divide

Earned & Unearned: You may notice that this week the total earned runs allowed by the Dodgers is two less than the sum of earned runs allowed by each individual pitcher. That's because two runs allowed by Matt Guerrier on Monday were unearned runs for the team, but earned runs charged to Guerrier individually. That's because the two runs were scored with two outs, and there were a pair of errors earlier in the inning, but before Guerrier entered the game. Per MLB Rule 10.16(i):

When pitchers are changed during an inning, the relief pitcher shall not have the benefit of previous chances for outs not accepted in determining earned runs.
Rule 10.16(i) Comment: It is the intent of Rule 10.16(i) to charge a relief pitcher with earned runs for which such relief pitcher is solely responsible. In some instances, runs charged as earned against the relief pitcher can be charged as unearned against the team.

Transactions:

  • Saturday: The Dodgers activated reliever Kenley Jansen from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Josh Lindblom to Double A
  • Sunday: The Dodgers for the second straight day improved the bullpen, activating Hong-Chih Kuo from the disabled list, and optioned Ramon Troncoso to Triple A
  • Sunday: Rod Barajas sprained his right ankle on Saturday, and was placed on the DL the next morning. A.J. Ellis, who was pulled from his game in Albuquerque upon news of the injury to Barajas on Saturday night, was recalled from Triple A on Sunday

Game Results:

Upcoming Week: The Dodgers end their homestand from hell with a pair of interleague series, hosting the Tigers and Angels.

MLB Trade rumors looks at trade candidate... Jamey Carroll

One thing we know is that they wouldn’t even consider that ‘til July, depending on standings. If they gain any ground and are still hanging around, I don’t see it. If they fade even more, they have to consider it. They’d get a pretty good (as that article states) type B comp kinda player. That said, of course I like Carroll a lot, as do a lot of you, and it is kinda sad to think about at the same time.

Catching up a bit

1. As bad as the offense has been (“POS” would be an understatement), we still have yet to have our full compliment of position players healthy at the same time, and although injuries are part of the game, I’m inclined to not hit the panic button until we see Raffy, The Beard, Jazz Hands, and RoBar consistently suck together for ~4-5 series in a row.
2. I can’t believe ‘Dre can go 5-22 in a week and still be 2nd on the team in OPS.
3. Our starting pitching is awesome: Hiro is sick when he’s on, Kid K’s doing his Cy Young thing, and Rubby looks like a man possessed on the hill.
4. The slow return of our better bullpen members should hopefully help stop the bleeding from poor Billz performances a little sooner, although Guerra and Lindbloom have pitched pretty damn well (I still can’t believe how far and how fast Tronc has fallen off the horse).
5. Am I the only one who didn’t know that “The Big Man” Clarence Cleamons died?!?!

Saturday night

was the first time this season I switched from watching the Dodger game to watch a non-sports program. I couldn’t bear to watch after Rubby was gone.

This leads me to my biggest concern this year – Matt Kemp. The Bison is leading the NL in OPS and is having his best year as a big leaguer. But I can’t bear to watch as it will be impossible to keep this stellar season going without a legitimate hitter in the 5 hole. There is no hitter on the Dodger roster who can fill that spot and make pitchers pitch to Kemp.

I’m going to propose a trade and being that I don’t know shit about other teams needs nor their minor league strengths or weaknesses, I’m going to give it a shot. Hunter Pence for Bills and Tray.

Pence and Bills make about the same amount of money this year. Bills has a 3yr/$35mil with a 4th year option option contract. Pence is arb eligible next year and FA eligible in 2014.

Do you think this trade is possible or am I nuts?

by RoyaleWithCheeze on Jun 20, 2011 9:14 AM PDT reply actions

Possible? sure

I think it’s an overpay, and I am personally not very keen on Pence. I definetely wouldn’t want to give both Billz and Trayvon for him.

Bills, for all his warts has been one of the most effective pitchers in baseball since he joined the rotation full time.

Hunter Pence is an average corner outfielder that’s several years older.

Unless you think Kemp is gonna keep his June pace up forever, there’s no time when it makes sense to walk him with the bases empty and less than two outs.

@andrewngrant

by regfairfield on Jun 20, 2011 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m more inclined to think Kemp will continue hitting at this pace than the idea of Loney and Uribe consistently having productive at bats.

Oh they’re always gonna suck, but unless Kemp hits a home run (which should happen ~5% of the time) they’re gonna have to come through anyway.

From Tom Tango (The Book Blog)

Protection is real, and it does exist. But, in an overall value sense, it has almost no impact. That is, while protection will affect how a pitcher pitches to a batter, and how many K, HR, BB a batter gets, these things end up balancing each other out to such an extent that, overall, it has no impact. I know, hard to believe, but that’s why we research these things, and present the evidence. Andy wrote it up in The Book, and as luck would have it, we excerpted it for all to see:

Linkage

by Xeifrank on Jun 20, 2011 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions

So I’m clear. walking Kemp to get to Loney = pitching to Kemp as far as expected runs scored is concerned? Frankly, (and this is going to draw some ire) I don’t care what the research shows. If I see James Loney or Juan Uribe on deck and the MVP up at the plate, unless the bases are loaded, he’s getting pitched around. And even then, if I’m winning by more than one, I still might pitch around him and assume I can get Jazz hands out on a 0-0 curveball.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

by G.Scott on Jun 20, 2011 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Read the link for a better explanation, but what it is saying is that Matt Kemp will fair no better “with protection” than without protection. ie – Matt Kemp wOBA with Pujols hitting after him will be the same (within margin of error) as with Loney hitting after him. Again, not my study. But these are smarter people than me. :)

by Xeifrank on Jun 20, 2011 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I understand the reasoning, but I’d need more in trade than Hunter Pence. An affordably-priced stud young pitcher is worth more than an above-average outfielder. You’d need a top-10 or so outfielder, or somebody with a more favorable contract status. If Ryan Braun or Mike Stanton are available, then we can talk Billingsley. Until then…

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

by Nolij on Jun 20, 2011 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m just throwing a some names out there. The Dodgers would be so much better if they had a hitter behind Kemp that would make pitchers pitch to him. Any idea out there?

by RoyaleWithCheeze on Jun 20, 2011 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I could get behind the idea of Pence. Maybe there is a prospect package that would be fair, and acceptable to Houston.

My biggest concern is that I don’t think this team is in position to buy. I’m not looking to punt the season at all, but I have no interest in sacrificing 2012 and 2013 to cement third place in the division.

As for Chad, I don’t think there is anybody who is even theoretically available that would be worth trading him.

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

by Nolij on Jun 20, 2011 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

You guys are all acting like the NL West is going to be so great in years to come. It’s not. 88-90 wins is not out of the question in 2012 with some realistic adjustments, and that will very likely win the division. It is not like they are competing with super rich teams with stacked lineups at all.

by delias man on Jun 20, 2011 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t want to compete in the NL West, I want the team to be as good as possible. Trading Billingsley for Pence does not make the team better in 2011, 2012 or any year.

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

by RoyaleWithCheeze on Jun 20, 2011 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Except that Dre is a headcase and has blatant holes in his swing, you’d think Kemp hitting behind him would provide some protection. Instead, all it’s done is force pitchers to aggressively pitch to him and his weaknesses to try to make sure there aren’t guys on for Kemp. While this is Kemp giving Dre protection because he gets pitched to, it doesn’t help if the guy being productive can’t buy a hit.

Realistically, Beltran is probably one of the only viable options. Then again, the Mets are doing better than us and how could we take on the contract of his in our current financial state. I just don’t see a lot of avenues for improving this season.

Frank was hoping for Fox to bail him out of his back against the wall finacial/payroll ordeal. He should now do the honorable thing and sell the club to a Dodgers fan or business entity with great acumen. Ohh, wait I forgot I was talking about Frank.

Frank: “Tell him I’m not here”
Secretary: “He says it’s really important”

much ado about nothing

also a side note….I read the artical about our single A team and noticed that Shoemaker is the coach. He used to coach in Vero, and I’d attribute most of my defensive knowledge in highschool to his teachings. He is great with middle infielders.

As I get back to work, I'll leave you with this

I really feel for our pitching staff. Knowing that if you give up 2-3 runs it might be the end of the game, it wears on you. Sure, they pitched really well for a solid few weeks, but without an offense to back your efforts, it gets mentally draining really quickly.

Wins should not be counted as a stat to determine the quality of a pitcher, this is true. But to the pitcher, the win next to your name is something that validates your work, your effort and your good outing. There are only so many times you can say to yourself ‘well, I did well even though we lost’ without getting drained and frustrated. They are less of a counting stat and more of a morale booster. When you hear guys say, “It was good for us to get Bills that win”, they mean it as “he deserves to get some recognition”.

In our league, I have 39K in 16 innings, have allowed 3 total earned runs and am 0-2 with a no decision. I’m pitching well, but I still go home pissed off. It’d be kinda cool to get a win, if for no other reason than team and personal morale.

Something to chew on.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

It's the short, meaningful, definitive statements

I went straight to the same place.
