Baseball Tidbits
The hottest team is housed in our nations capitol. The Nationals are 9 - 1over their last ten games and have evened their season record at 37 - 37. Their three best offensive players could not be guessed by 99% of baseball fans. Michael Morse (145), Laynce Nix (126 OPS+) and Danny Espinosa (116 OPS+). Ryan Zimmerman only has 73 plate appearances so I did not include him. Overall the Nationals have six players with over 100 plate appearances with an OPS+ over 100. Ryan Zimmerman will soon make it eight. Michael Morse might be the best kept secret in baseball. Some TBLA members campaigned for him to become a Dodger and solve our LF problem this past winter. If only that had come to pass.
The Brewers put a move on the Cardinals even before Pujols got hurt. With the big three of Zack Greinke, Yovani Gallardo, and Shaun Marcum doing good work, they are a team to be reckoned with. Some may look at Greinke's 4.77 ERA and think he is struggling but his xFIP of 1.84 along with a 11.93 K/Rate supplemented by a 1.34 BB/rate tell us the real story. Grienke is dealing and the Brewers are surging. Prince Fielder has the second best wRC in June at .266 trailing only Paul Konerko who has an unreal .305.
Best hitting SS in baseball in June is JJ Hardy who has slugged seven home runs to augment his .730 slug%.
Phillies continue to dominate pitching. Doc is the overall best pitcher in baseball so far this year, but his teammates Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee have been the 1st / 3rd best pitchers in June.
Michael Pineda and Alexi Ogando continue to fight for ROY pitching honors, with Zach Britton tagging along in case they struggle.
The Giants have FOUR starting pitchers in the top 11 of WAR. That is even after Bumgarner gave up eight earned runs in one inning this week.
Jered Weaver is number one in WAR in the AL. Kershaw is number three in the NL. They meet this Sunday. Might want to bet the under.

I have tickets to Sunday’s game and I can’t use them. Parking, too. All free to a good home but you have to pick them up from me. I live near Rosecrans & Aviation and I work near Overland & Washington.

Worth noting, at 3B
The Dodgers have 6 home runs out of 3B. There are a number of teams worse:
Florida, Detroit have 2.
White Sox and Mariners have 1.
Seattle 3B are hitting .186/.236/.249

Is "other" what happens when you bat around in an inning that a PH entered in?
by Taylor Maricle on Jun 23, 2011 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions
suppose it could be a pinch runner that bats around and hits as well.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
I think the PR turned hitter is one way. I’m not sure if you are still considered a PH if you get to the plate twice.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
you are a pinch hitter until you’re assigned a defensive position
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Nope
You are a pinch hitter once, when you are pinch hitting for someone. If you happen to bat again during the inning, that falls under “other”
by Eric Stephen on Jun 23, 2011 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions
It happened against the Dodgers earlier this year
when the Braves tacked on 8 runs in the 9th against Jancoso. Eric Hinske pinch hit for Jonny Venters and homered, then later in the inning batted again, as “other,” and singled.
by Eric Stephen on Jun 23, 2011 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions
Braves pinch hitters were 0-for-25 on the season (with no walks and eight strikeouts) before collecting two hits in two at-bats tonight. Brooks Conrad singled under James Loney’s glove in the top of the seventh inning off of Blake Hawksworth, and Eric Hinske put the game away with a two-run home run off Jansen and a single off Troncoso in the ninth inning. That’s right, Hinske had two plate appearances in the ninth inning, as the Braves batted around. Only the first PA counts as a pinch hit appearance though; the second PA for Hinske in the ninth was the rare “no position” PA

In his last 197 PA
he has an OPS over 800. It dips under 800 when you go to 202

You didn’t ask for the average OPS for all first basemen since James Loney started doing better :)
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
I was just excited to see him being average over his last 200 PAs
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
If Loney goes
5 for 5, with four singles, one double and two walks in his next 7 plate appearances he will be at replacement level (hitting) for first basemen (wOBA style). A far cry from where he was a month or so ago.
Was thinking the numbers above might be skewed by a couple otherworldly performances
although Pujols is not exactly Pujols this year, so maybe median is more interesting than the average, but the median OPS team performance at 1B is about .789, so that actually agrees with the idea that getting an .800 OPS is slightly better than average. The sOPS+ column bears that out too. Loney’s start was so horrendous that it still really drags down the Dodgers’ season-to-date performance at 1B.

I generally don’t agree with the premise of xFIP.
Homers are the mistakes of pitchers and shouldn’t be normalized as if not giving up home runs aren’t a skill.
Actual data disagrees, this isn’t something someone just pulled out of their ass.
Second it’s saying the skill is keeping the ball on the ground, not keeping it from going over the fence.

If xFIP only counted outfield fly balls how would you feel.
Last thing I saw there was actually a negative R value when you tried to find a correlation year to year in line drive percentage, which explains why BABIP is so unstable. I can’t use tERA because of that.

I didn’t like this comment of yours yesterday, regarding Billingsley:
peripherally he’s awesome and that is all we really care about as long as we are talking about our own pitchers.
That’s what I objected to. Yes, Billingsley has struggled in June. That is plain to see. Yes, his start Tuesday was an improvement over his previous three. That’s all.
by Eric Stephen on Jun 23, 2011 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions
Yes, it was an improvement, he could have rolled the ball to the plate and it would have been an improvement. As I said I only watched two innings and was unimpressed.
Anyway in the comments I think I can be more subjective and more of a fan then in my columns. Bringing up something I say in comments when I make a few hundred a day to compare to a column, hell you could do that all day and make me look stupid.

The tough thing here is that you can’t really make the ruling on that “did he have a chance or not”. I would argue (from the umpire perspective) that the fan interference did not give us the ability to see how the play would have turned out, so it needs to be called.
Of course, I have not seen video of this yet.

Of course, I do have this belief that Baseball Prospectus had this thing against the Dodgers when that happened (I think Cristina Karhl will be at the SABR convention next month so if I get the chance, I will ask about that).

Jon Garcia or Garret Gould would have been more reasonable choices. If both have only a say, 25% of making the majors, than Silverio would have only, say a 5% of doing that.
They are in Single A, don’t think they are allowed. Garcia is from Puerto Rico so he would rep the USA side would he not? As is Gould, they are looking for international players. The concept is one player from each team for the International and USA side.

Thats crazy. The guy just quits on his team because his option wasnt picked up? I understand wanting the security but he signed the dam contract, he should honor it. The team doesnt have to pick up the option or work out new deal until the offseason.
Thats different because they havent signed a contract. They hold out to get the best contract they can, or because they dont want to do mini camps or preseason haha. But anyways, I just dont see how Riggleman walking out helps him. I think it makes things worse, but I could be wrong. But why not just finish out season and see what happens in offseason? He wont get a new job before then anyways I dont think.
Can't remember another time one of the hotter teams in baseball has their manager resign that abruptly.

MLB owns the rights to all digital forms of broadcasting games (really they own all rights since they have to approve all media deals).
But only in rare instances can a team stream games on a non-MLB site.

HD Net is a TV network is it not?
by Eric Stephen on Jun 23, 2011 1:43 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Ah
will then unless HD Net is willing pay multiple millions plus the fact that Time Warner, Direct TV and other carriers won’t be willing to charge customers 2 bucks a month for HD Net make it an unlikely business deal.
Should function similar to YES or NESN. Cuban owns the network and would own the team too, no? I suppose it could work the same as the Fox ownership, but I doubt that.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Of course, but if Cuban sits there and says “I’m going to pay my left pocket $3billion dollars from my right hand”, what does it matter?
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Because that’s what Frank McCourt has been doing with the Dodgers the last 8 years, and it turned the franchise into a clusterfuck?
You need some sort of ethical reason why you’re doing something.
i would think it would be like if McCourt started a Dodger network
the money would then go back into the team.

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."
by Tommy Blackjack on Jun 23, 2011 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions
Cable (and Satellite)
work this way.
The channels/networks work out a distribution deal where they pay the station a certain amount each month (ESPN famously gets $4 per subscriber each month whether or not that person ever watches that channel).
The rights fees are sold by the team/MLB to that channel.
The reason why Fox Sports may pay more for the Dodgers is that without the Lakers, they may not have enough content to realistically charge the carriers whatever they are getting.
I doubt HDNet gets much in subscriber fees now plus since (I assume) they only broadcast nationally, they would not want to have most of the country blacked out while they showed Dodger games in LA area.
good point

Trough pissing is a lost art
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
Steps
1) if no one else is using it, go wherever.
2) if one other person is using it, select furthest non-awkard point away from them
3) if more than one other person is using it, select anywhere at least one person-width away from someone else.
4) if only the person-width gaps are available, you may choose any spot where you won’t bump shoulders with either of the people on your sides.
5) if bumping shoulders is the only way for you to get to that spot, hold it.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Zooey Deschanel got a new TV series called the New Girl
About a girl who moves in with three guys who try to hook her up with other men after she is dumped by a long term boyfriend.
I do not know if the three men she is shacking up with on the show are gay.

From Wikipedia
The show will star Zooey Deschanel as Jessica Day, a well-liked, bubbly, and adorable woman in her late 20’s who is trying to get over her surprise breakup with her model boyfriend. She eventually finds a new place to stay when she moves in with three single guys; Nick, a bartender, Schmidt, a professional and modern-day casanova, and Coach, a former athlete turned trainer. Rounding out this unlikely bunch is Jessica’s street-smart model friend Cece. Together, this group of friends try to help Jessica learn a lot about love, life and mostly about herself, while at the same time learn a lot about themselves.
This show will be fabulous.
I think Zooey is Johnny Drama to Emily’s Vinny at this point.

Exactly why I’m torn over this.. I think we have a real shot at the cup now. Richards is capable of 30 goals and we needed someone like this last season and now we have it.

I like the trade. We have centers on the roster that would keep Schenn down another year, and Richards had 60+ points last year. Sucks about the pick, but Richards also has a long term locked in contract, so that’s nice for the chances of signing the rest of our young stars. Who all still needs extended?

30th in NHL in scoring in 10-11, 49th in 09-10. So let’s call him about the 50th best player in the league, factoring in defensemen and goalies. He is young, he is good and he is locked up long-term. I don’t have a problem with the acquisition, just the cost.
Making a comparison to Bonds or Pujols is ridiculous. Kemp isn’t a ridiculous comp, but I don’t think Richards is as good as him.

There is more than scoring. Defensive play, he’s a top scoring center, which are rarer than top scoring wingers.

he’s more like, Hanley Ramirez then? positional value and all that.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Maybe Jose Reyes? I guess it depends on how high you are on Hanley or Jose. But not how high you are, in general.

Was going to say Utley, but he’s older now. Reyes works, if he had a 9 year extension for $5mil per year.

$5M/year is a very high hockey salary.

If in 2007 I thought I could trade Kershaw for Barry Bonds, and that would make me a bonafide title contender, I’d do it. I think this move makes them very, very strong.

And for years too. Richards is 26 and putting 60+ points up. Him and Kopitar are one heck of a 1-2 punch.

I completely see this line of thinking. The trade makes sense, but they are out three chips. I still wonder if they couldn’t have gotten more (i.e. another usable player like a 4th line winger) or given up a lesser player or draft pick to go with. I’d have expected more like Schenn+Simmonds+5th. I’m probably just quibbling over the small details. This trade definitely makes them better now and for the foreseeable future.

From Jon Heyman on potential trade pieces
Kuroda and Lilly come in at $5 and #6 on his list. Of course, it is Heyman so…lol at his comments.
5. Hiroki Kuroda, Dodgers SP. It’s probably premature to consider any of the L.A. pitchers yet. But if the Dodgers slip further, there’s a treasure trove of veteran pitchers, starting with Kuroda, whose expiring contract may actually be seen as a plus. Very solid pitcher (5-8, 3.07 ERA this year).
6. Ted Lilly, Dodgers SP. Gutsy lefthander who gets a lot out of his ability and would draw interest if available. Having his typical year (5-6, 4.26), and his $33 million, three-year deal is fair.
"Fast just got Faster"
Please take Lilly away from us.

I hope you realize both the audacity and dickishness of your comment.
In the early ’90s, everyone knew about steroids. The voices relative to Jose Canseco by 1988 had put the buzz out there. The biggest difference between 1991 whispers and 2001 whispers is that the former was kept out of the mass media and by the latter, the accusations were flung freely.
Anybody who had a dramatic improvement (i.e. win RoY straight out of AA) was immediately accused of steroids. It was not just Canseco. Tracy Jones was a fine skinny ballplayer in Hawthorne in the early-80’s. In between high school and replacing Pete Rose, he put on 30 pounds of muscle, went from mild-mannered to aggressive and bragged to his friends (including my uncle) that he had hit the weights and found nutritional supplements, which he would talk about with a wink.
There were guys juicing at that time and there were plenty of accusers.

From 1994-2004 the lowest leading slugging pct. in baseball was Albert Belle’s .690, the only other year where the leader did not top .700 was in 2000 when Todd Helton topped all batters with a .698 slugging pct.

“I learned of Jim’s decision just prior to today’s game. He told me that unless his current contract was extended for another season by the end of today’s game he intended to immediately resign as manager and would not be accompanying the team on the scheduled road trip to play the Chicago White Sox.
“I believe, and I told Jim, decisions as important as this must be made thoughtfully and methodically. I was not willing to make judgments of that magnitude in the course of a nine inning game.
“I talked to Jim before the season and have emphasized since that no decision would be made on his extension until after the end of the season. George Frazier, color analyst for Root Sports broadcasts of Rockies games and a former Major League pitcher, will play in the Old Timers Game on Sunday at Yankee Stadium, before that afternoon’s Rockies-Yankees contest. Frazier was a relief pitcher for the Yankees in the 1981 World Series.
They forgot to add he was the second pitcher to ever lose 3 games in a single World Series (unintentionally since Lefty Williams lost 3 games in the 1919 World Series)

More at ESPN: If and when agreement is reached, all players with 4, 5 and 6 years of service are expected to be unrestricted free agents.

Assuming this deal gets done
The free agent signings/rumor mill is going to be a shitstorm.

In tracking active leaders
Baseball Reference uses 3000 PA as the minimum.
In 1990, who was the active leader in slugging with a career average at that time .520?
Also fun note, between 1961-2000, the active leader in slugging was not over .600 (Ted Williams retired in 1960 and it wasn’t until Todd Helton went over .600 after the 2000 season, did the active leader go back over .600)
Nope
he retired after a nice run as the active leader. I will add this player was only the active leader in that year.
Since when are the Mets in the same division as the Cubs?

No
in 1990 Andre was a a Cub and had been since 1987

Eric Davis
Worried about the 3000 PA’s
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
Good guess, here was his total stats as of the end of that season - 1990
2983 PA .272/.364/.522
After 1991, he dropped to .509, Jose was at .519, and then Eric was never above .500 for a career slugging for the rest of his career.
I am sure this is emptiest .423 average in history
Dodgers
June Bloom: Aaron Miles leads the NL with a .423 batting avg. this month #Dodgers

.423/.429/.462

Pitching scoffs at Pythag

They are World Champions
They are probably going to win the division again
Calling them bad at baseball based on pythag seems to focus a little to much on the algorithm and not on the playing of the game.
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
they've scored the fewest runs in the major leagues
If their offense doesnt improve, they will not win the division.
Arizona or Colorado will
I would be pissed if they win the division 5 more times in the next 5 years

Sometimes we look at 2003 and say how frustrating a year that was to watch
Really, in the second half, the pitching could not keep up with a pace of allowing 3 runs a game (actually at this time in 2003, the Dodgers had 42+ run differential and were 13 games above .500. They ended up with a 18+ run differential and a 8 games above .500.
who's watching
the NBA draft?

would you do
Odom for Iguadola? I would, I don’t know the contract numbers though.

Iggy is owed some cash, like $44m
I like Odom a lot, but Lakers do need to get younger. I’m on the fence. Wouldn’t mind getting rid of Walton though. I don’t hate him, he just contributes very little

Can you name the last 5
Number one overall NBA picks to be on a NBA Championship team and only one did not do it on the team that drafted him.
Tyson Chandler is the #1 who didn’t go with the team who picked him.
Other guesses: tim duncan, shaq, david robinson, hakeem, worthy.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Tyson Chandler was 2nd overall behind Kwame Brown.
Shaq is the one the went with a team that didn’t draft him. I believe all your other guesses fit the criteria, just don’t know if they are the among the last five. The five may be your five “other guesses”.

Derrick Williams goes from the warmth of California and Arizona
to Minnesota, who might not win as many games as his alma mater in 2012.
they might be trading him
for a Vet
