Per the Dave Smith complaint

about racism, I remember him saying (maybe 2005 when I listened a lot to sports radio while in the OC) that the Dodgers would be cursed because they let go of Ross Porter and he constantly harped on the eminent domain issue with building DS and relocating the Mexican community there, etc.

He seemed like he had an ax to grind with the Dodgers, now with the Angels too. Of course it could be a legitimate claim. And about the curse, well, maybe he was right about that one since he didn’t like the McCourts. Bleh.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jun 30, 2011 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

they should both be here...

But i’m more excited about Trayvon at this point.

I never expected the power to develop that he’s shown.
And last year he put up a 400+OBP in the southern league…not easy to do.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

at any rate, I almost guarantee Tray will be called up this summer

(Obviously at the least he’ll be called up in September, but I’m gonna wager before then. But we’ll see. ) I think the K rate is still a concern, but I do think he has to have the team’s attention at least. Hitting HRs on the road in some PCL parks that aren’t hitters parks to same degree as the others is at least a sign that his power could be legit. Still some stuff to work on though.

But I do think he’ll be up within 1-2 months.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

what does it matter?

Thats the price you pay for 3TO hitters.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

i think youve been told this before but

there’s difference between striking out in the minors, and striking out in the majors.

by npurcell on Jun 30, 2011 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

i just think contact rates are way overrated

what it matter if you can make contact if the ball isnt being hit hard anywhere?

No more loneys.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

we’re not talking about being Loney, we’re talking about him being 2010 Garrett Anderson because he can’t hit the ball period.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

by G.Scott on Jun 30, 2011 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

if Trayvon is a

260/330/450 player thats really valuable as a CF’er.
Even if thats his ceiling.

There’s just not many players that at age 22 can put up 400 OBP in the southern league, then in AAA be on pace to hit 35hrs the next year…and oh have stolen almost 50 bases a season.

Thats the entire toolbox.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions

though some would argue (cough fangraphs cough) that Kemp would be even better as a corner outfielder

At any rate, if Trayvon ends up actually as good as we hope (or better) that’s not a bad problem to have.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

yeah if he is resigned, I hope they put him in RF

by NotJoeTorre on Jun 30, 2011 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Doubt Kemp would ever agree to that unless the Dodgers sign him long term (like 5+yrs).

He knows his numbers are way more valuable in CF than a corner.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Hes basically at the same K rate hes been at his entire career.. Not sure why its a problem now.

by NotJoeTorre on Jun 30, 2011 8:18 PM PDT up reply actions

well speaking for myself

it’s always been a problem. I had hoped he could show improvement on it for me.

Not show any improvement in that department makes it a problem for me.

by npurcell on Jun 30, 2011 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions

cant expect prospects to be perfect

sure he hasnt gotten much better with striking out but he’s improved his power/patience immensley.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah it’s not all of a sudden a problem, it’s just a problem that now that he’s close to the majors hasn’t been fixed.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

by G.Scott on Jun 30, 2011 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I seriously doubt it will be fixed. Strike outs do not bother me one bit. Not taking walks bothers me.

by NotJoeTorre on Jun 30, 2011 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions

do you really think a hitter that strikes out 25%+ of the time is going to see 4 balls from a major league pitcher?

It’s a huge difference in talent as evidenced by the hundreds of prospects who destroy the minors then can’t hit a lick in the majors. Someone who strikes out that much is indicative of someone who can’t make good contact very often, so even when he’s not striking out, you can expect plenty of weak fly balls and ground outs.

Don’t get me wrong, I think he should be called up too just to see what he can do, but it should be in September, and it should be to start twice a week, tops, just to get some exposure.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

by G.Scott on Jun 30, 2011 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

You can still be a mistake hitter at the majors…and be productive…if you kill the ball.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

sure

but that’s only until teams figure you out, which they do much much quicker in the majors.

I want Tray up soon too BTW, i’m just offering a counterpoint

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Jun 30, 2011 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

also...yes i do think players that strike out alot

will still draw walks bc if they have power…pitchers are going to be less likely to challenge them.

A guy with a really high k rate to me means they cant hit good pitches. But they can still hit bad ones (and do damage if they got power)…and if they are walking can still be good enough to not swing at total garbage.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

by NotJoeTorre on Jun 30, 2011 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Well then again maybe he can play some superb defense and turn into Carl Crawford lite.

by NotJoeTorre on Jun 30, 2011 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions

He was made a LF because of Kemp and because his arm is average in CF. Not bad but not great, think Bernie Williams in his prime.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

You talking about Jerry Sands or something?

by NotJoeTorre on Jun 30, 2011 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah I honestly think a September call up makes the most sense right now too

even with the big club’s struggles, I think the Dodgers have handled him the right way so far, knowing he still needs to work on some things. Sands, who also has needed work but seems like he’s gotten that work in lately, will get the next call (back) I would bet. But still won’t be surprised if Tray comes before September, too, depending on whether they make any trades or other roster moves.

Televised games

We were talking about this is other day, and I finally looked it up from the 1988 Dodgers media guide.

In 1988, there were 46 Dodgers games on local TV (which at the time was KTTV, channel 11). All were road games.

By rough count this season, there are 99 games on Prime Ticket and 48 more on KCAL (with some still TBD)

by Eric Stephen on Jun 30, 2011 8:08 PM PDT reply actions

That’s what I remember. They didn’t broadcast any home games, for fear of lessening the crowd.
I got used to it.

and those not on PT or KCAL I assume are on FOX or ESPN. Can’t remember the last time a Dodger game wasn’t televised.

I remember growing up, I never saw Laker or Dodger home games cause we didn’t have cable. I wonder when the packages got more jumbled, since the Lakers still have the home and away split

Can’t remember the last time a Dodger game wasn’t televised

Last September against the Rockies at Dodger Stadium. The 1pm game was dropped from Fox, and shown on delay at 4pm (though the Dodgers got their ass handed to them).

And in 2009 the Dodgers had a game in Florida that started at 3pm PT that wasn’t televised live (Fox blackout window). It was televised on delay starting at 4pm.

So with guys like Schlichting blowing chunks and Ian Snell, too,

is there a point where Dodgers call some of their many AA guys up to AAA to see if they can handle the PCL? (Not as much to give that team a better chance to win, which is less important but… just to get rid of the fodder at this point and move some guys up?)

You’d think they would have done that with Lindblom, but they sent him back to AA.

by Joey Joe on Jun 30, 2011 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I think that’s because there was no room on the roster there for him.

Ian Snell.. forgot he was in the minors.

by NotJoeTorre on Jun 30, 2011 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

he seemed worth taking a flyer on

but has been awful so far.

I get why they don’t want to send pitching prospects to the PCL per se, but given the parks vary a bit, the guys with great stuff, you’d think they’d still fare okay there. Lindblom did go to AAA at first didn’t he, before he was sent down to AA (and then went to LA and back to AA)?

then was moved back to the pen after failing as a starter.

I think it’s great that almost every game is televised, but way back when, we would plan for the radio only games. That’s when Vinny really shined. It was almost better to listen on the radio. I remember listening at the beach in between surfing in Ventura. I knew which Ventura station carried the Dodgers, and if you went east, you could listen to the dodgers as far east as Albuquerque. I didn’t need the pictures to see the action. It was in my head, and was better than TV pictures. (I’m a better director.)

And right on cue Trayvon strikes out to end the game :-(

to be fair, B Sisk is pretty good and he struck out the side in the 9th (including Sands, too).
