Dodgers Week 10 In Review: The Bison Breaks Out
Matt Kemp and the Dodgers put together their second-best offensive week of the season (narrowly behind Week 4), and won two series against the Rockies and Reds. Their run differential of +14 was their best week of the season. However, the rest of the division didn't cooperate, as the Dodgers ended their week just as they started it, five and a half games out of first place in the NL West.
Dodger Batter of the Week: Matt Kemp had a heck of a week, hitting .409/.500/.955 with four home runs, 13 RBI, six runs scored, and five walks. Kemp hit a game-tying grand slam against the Reds on Saturday, one of two home runs on the day for Kemp on a day that he set a career high with six RBI. On the season, Kemp's 48 RBI are two behind Adrian Gonzalez of Boston for the major league lead.
Honorable mention goes to Chad Billingsley, who was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, a walk, 3 RBI, and two runs scored in his two games this week. It was a heck of a week at the plate for Dodgers with the middle name of Ryan, as Matthew Ryan Kemp and Chad Ryan Billingsley both wreaked havoc with a bat in their hands.
Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Ted Lilly quieted the Rockies on Tuesday over seven innings, allowing just two runs while striking out eight. The pitching staff on the whole had a solid week, especially the bullpen, which posted a 2.08 ERA and 2.67 FIP in 17 1/3 innings.
Week 10 Record: 4-2
36 runs scored (6.00 per game)
22 runs allowed (3.67 per game)
.711 pythagorean winning percentage
Season Record: 28-32
223 runs scored (3.72 per game)
248 runs allowed (4.13 per game)
.452 pythagorean winning percentage (27-33)
Transactions:
- Saturday: Rafael Furcal (strained left oblique) and Jon Garland (right shoulder inflammation) each made their second trip to the disabled list this season. To take their place, the Dodgers recalled infielder Ivan DeJesus and pitcher John Ely from Albuquerque.
Game Results:
- Monday: Dodgers 7, Rockies 1
- Tuesday: Dodgers 8, Rockies 2
- Wednesday: Rockies 3, Dodgers 0
- Friday: Reds 2, Dodgers 1
- Saturday: Dodgers 11, Reds 8 (11)
- Sunday: Dodgers 9, Reds 6
Upcoming Week: The Dodgers finish up their 10-game road trip, running the 2007 & 2009 NLDS gauntlet through Philadelphia and Colorado.

I understand the thought process that leads to Carrol Dodgers MVP
but it is wrong. Matt Kemp is the dodgers most valuable player
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
If he keeps this up he’ll be the MVP of the National League
Nothing is ever easy.

Yeah I get what Lyons was saying
and JC really has been so crucial to the team, but yeah… it’s still ludicrous. Kemp is the team’s MVP period. He’s carried their offense on his back at times.

Apparently Garvey and Hershiser want to buy the Dodgers

Garvey ownership will give the Sklar brothers more material
but I like the idea of Orel Hershiser. Intriguing. Do they have enough financially to be primary ownership though?

Is he still part owner of the Penguins?
Garvey’s financial history doesn’t instill me with a lot of confidence otherwise, but as a minority owner or part of a group I guess it would be less worrisome.

Thoughts on a game long after anyone cares. That was awesome. (Yep, watched it in the archives.)
1) You DO NOT pitch to Billingsley, you must pitch around him. Man, he ate poor Wood up today. Wasn’t his best day on the mound, mind you, but in that park you say fuhgedaboutit and tip your hat to his bat.
2) Kemp is so locked in right now it is scary. My hope is, especially with other guys coming back too, that rest of the lineup can continue on what they did these last two games and do some damage on their own, because you can bet Philly pitchers (who are better than Reds pitchers anyway) are aware of Kemp. But man is he dangerous.
3) While Ely and Lindblom both scared me at times, they got the job done and as you note, really saved the pen and the team. Ely in particular was pretty solid, his misguided throw to 2nd was probably his worst moment. A few other good knocks against him but otherwise was pretty decent. And once Josh harnessed his stuff a bit more and warmed up as it were, he looked a lot better too.
Baseball is a funny game. We were all depressed after Friday because they looked pathetic on offense in a hitter’s park, but things turned around in a hurry. Philly will be tougher because of their pitching (and I don’t like Lilly throwing in that park) but they are scuffling a little too and lineup scares me less than Cincy’s.
Also: As much as I love Jamey Carroll, did anyone here comment on Steve Lyons’ pre game thought that JC is clearly the team’s MVP at this point? He’s been a godsend. But Matt Kemp waves hello.

Brandon has his third and final draft preview coming up in the morning, then there will be a first round recap thread that gets posted during the game tomorrow. Just a weird scheduling quirk that the Dodgers happen to be on the east coast and playing while they pick.
Tuesday and Wednesday will be a little more manageable, since the draft is during the day, starting at 9am.
please tell me Tuesday is a Prime Ticket game

I'm sure this was discussed ad nauseum in game thread but... Any insight on who goes
when Thames comes back? With Sands getting most of teh starts now seems there’s a decent chance they DFA Gibbons, no? But then Sands has options remaining and hasn’t been hitting cover off ball lately so obviously still seems more likely they send him down.
And IDJ for Uribe, and Ely for Hawksworth? (And Lindblom for Padilla if he comes back soon)
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
someone posted
who seems to work for the dodgers, that sands will be going down for a bit when Thames is ready to come off the DL. Then Sands will be brought back up permanently in a month or so.
yeah, that someone's post was also taken down so I can't refer to it ;-)
but I recall it. Probably still what’ll happen. I just remember Mattingly also saying Sands was going to be starting from now on. But he might’ve meant… from now until he’s sent down.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
At this point I would be (pleasantly) shocked if Sands doesn’t go for Thames
DeJesus for Uribe
Ely for Hawksowrth
All three as soon as tomorrow.
Even slumping, Sands has far for upside than Thames
I say keep Sands and DFA Thames.

Gibbons hits better then Gwynn
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
who also might hit better then gwynn
I’m in no way advocating getting rid of Gwynn. I don’t really wants Sands to go down either, but I don’t think it would be the worst thing in the world for him right now.
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
Gwynn is still the third WARiest outfielder on the team, but it’s such a low bar that Hoffmann could clear it.
Man we’re bad.
@andrewngrant
Just pretend our LF is our CF
and our CF is our LF, and suddenly the outfield looks much less shitty!
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
Like the way you think.
Holy cow Kemp has a two WAR lead over our second best position player, Jamey Carroll.

MVP! MVP! MVP!

to me you gotta pick 1 lefty off the bench
you cant have both lefties, and send down the right hander.
Thats what Thames is for
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
basically comes down to wanting either a platoon or everyday player..
Gibbons/Thames platoon.
Or Sands everyday.
too bad sands isn't hitting like an everyday player
would make this an easy decision for mattingly
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
Thanks
Yeah Vegas odds have it 3-1 Sands sent down, 6-1 Gibbons DFA’d. 100-1 Thames isn’t activated. 450-1 Xavier Paul reacquired.

Best guess is that Pujols wins NL Player of the Week but a great week by Matty. BTW, the opening series remains the only one where both Kershaw and Bills each won their start.
Illinois eliminates Fullerton at Goodwin Field. Stanford will have two chances to beat Illinois to go to the super-regionals at North Carolina.
I would prefer him to go to an AL team, though.

I want him to be a DBack, sign a crazy contract, then sign a Justin Upton deal, then watch as he wins rookie of the year while on the 60 day DL.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
I won’t say, but I always mix up the winners of the two straight years those two teams met in the Finals.
The format of the Finals the first year those two teams met was:
Home
Road
Road
Home
Home
Road
Home
I might like that better than 2-3-2
Even crazier
The 1975 Finals between Golden State and Washington (Washington had HCA) went 1-2-2-1-1-1. Not that it got past four games. Golden State had to play its home games at the Cow Palace.
UCLA's starter Zack Weiss was actually born in and went to HS in Irvine
interesting.

Cubs in firesale mode...i have a deal for them..
Zambrano & Aramis Ramirez
for
Ted Lilly, James Loney, Kyle Russell, Chris Withrow
You better throw Bellasario and Lindblom in there
X Paul too
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
basically
An exchange of bad contracts (with the Dodgers taking the worse end)…and in return the Cubs get a couple of C level prospects (tho Withrow may be thought of better).
I imagine the cubs will get more then an exchange of bad contracts and c prospects for those two
if they choose to trade them.
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
maybe...but Zambrano is owed ALOT of money
But he’s turned it around since the middle of last season, so you may be right. A-Ram has very little power this year, so that might scare some teams off…i think he could be had cheaply.
They can pay some of Z's salary probably
and get some good prospects. Not sure if they want to trade him or not. A ram will probably end up on the market i think
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
problem with A-ram is
if he’s traded, his option becomes guaranteed.

well 16mils sucks...
But the Dodgers will need some new infield parts for next year.
I think there’s slim pickings out there for 3rd base in 2012.
3b- A-Ram
SS- Uribe
2b- ???
1b- Sands or Blake
i think Zambrano/Ramirez deals are pretty big tho
So even though Lilly has a big deal…getting Z/Ramirez may be a better benefit for them.
They can do that
and get better then c prospects, without taking on other peoples shitty contracts.
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
they are going to have to eat some of Zambrano's deal
or take back a bad contract.
I cant imagine anyone taking his entire deal even though he’s pitching pretty good now.
if they yankees still need pitching...

Things like this probably happened a 1000x times a year before the media reported everything under the sun, it’s part of being competitive. wow, did anyone know this about Miles?
In spring training of 2000, several of his teammates from the Houston Astros organization were in their hotel when two gunmen burst into their room. Miles was in the next room and the gunmen took him hostage. The police arrived before the gunmen were able to take him to their getaway car, but one gunman fled the scene. The other forced Miles back into his room where he ended up wrestling the gunman to the ground. The police entered the room and shot the gunman while Miles held him to the floor. The gunman survived his wounds, and his accomplice was later captured.

I'd heard that but totally forgotten it
Good on him. I honestly have to say, even if he’s still a mediocre ballplayer, he’s easy to root for and is playing over his head when Dodgers needed it. And he’s also apparently a badass.

Ryan Theriot is on a 19 game hitting streak and would be an asset to the 2011 Dodgers.
I will be sad if we end up losing that trade.
@andrewngrant
That never was a choice, Carroll was on the team no matter what.
Theriot or Uribe on the other hand..
@andrewngrant
Uribe is a much better defender
at 3 positions, if he can just stay healthy he’s the better player…at 7 mil a year (gulp). He needs to OPS 700 to make it worthwhile…hope sucks.

Might be blacked out in LA though?
I’m just excited to be able to watch them in HD on my telly for once, rather than on my laptop.

Rollins
I wonder what Jimmy Rollins status will be like for this series. He missed today’s game with a knee injury and there is some talk about him landing on the Dodgers List (DL).
#WilsonValdez
On the Phillies website it looks like Rollins might not play but won't be put on the DL yet
The Phillies have listed Rollins as day to day, and even though he had a noticeable limp in the clubhouse before Sunday’s game, he doesn’t believe he will have to go on the disabled list.
“I don’t think it’s a DL thing,” he said. “If it’s still swollen in four days and there’s no improvement, we might have to take a closer look into it, but I definitely wouldn’t put it that far at this point. I can still walk on it.”
High stepping into home plate is apparently a much lesser offense than untucking your shirt.

Didn't know this
Apparently Joe Buck has a virus on his left vocal cord he got right after this past Super Bowl. He cannot raise his voice. if you’ve heard him at all this season he sounds different.
The lead PBP guy for the World Series cannot raise his voice at all. Apparently, a lot of people were asking why Buck’s call of Pujols’ walk off HR Saturday was so calm (even for Buck). That’s the reason.
While I wish Mr. Buck good health (even wishing he would take some time off to make sure he’s healthy), I can’t help but think of Will Ferrell’s character who can’t control the modulation of his own voice.

Well
not lazy, just squinted, and with the colorization looking a bit crazy.

For anyone who has been waiting around to hear the results of the G.Scott-Nolij showdown, G. won the individual battle, but my team won the game. He started me off with a slider that barely had enough break for me not to square up on it and I fouled it off. He threw a beautiful pitch on the outside corner for strike two, then buzzed me up and in on the third pitch. He got a little help from the ump on a pitch a couple of inches off the black, but I should have been protecting with two strikes, so he got me on the backwards-K. I can’t beat myself up too much, since he went 4 one-hit innings, including perfect through three, and struck out 9 or 10.
He also Jamey Carroll-ed his way on base with a HBP, BB and a solid single. I walked and scored in the 7th to complete our 8-7 come-from-behind victory. ishXdavid drove in the winning run, I believe. Yay us.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Man, spend three sentences talking about how you were unjustly struck out (ha) and one talking about the 10K’s I had in 4 innings and one bloop single with no walks. You sure you don’t moonlight as Hawk Harrelson?
My “solid single” was also by far the hardest hit ball of the night, and if i had any loft on it, might have gone out.
Up 7-0 after 4, in a 7 inning game, and we lose 8-7. Gahbej. If you’re gonna report on the game, at least portray it accurately. Your team was dominated for the first half of the game then blooped and walked its way to 8 runs in 3 innings. Not one of you hit a ball hard.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
My apologies. G.Scott single-handedly won the game with his unreal baseball talent and winning smile. Then a strong gust of wind blew 8 runs on the board for the other team, rendering his brilliance moot.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
If it wasn’t week one and we weren’t trying to get the other pitcher work, yeah. Don’t go all passive-agressive martyr here man. I shoved it against you guys, was all the sportsman in the world about the loss, and wake up to you calling me both Jamey Carroll and called me lucky.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
