Dodgers Off Day News & Notes
A few trivial Dodgers notes on the final off day of the break...
- James Loney, Juan Uribe, and Casey Blake are tied for fourth on the Dodgers in home runs...with four.
- The Dodgers have allowed one run or less in each of their last four games. The last time they had a streak like that of five games was May 14-20, 2003. In the final four games of that stretch, Eric Gagne picked up a save, one of six straight games (in seven days) Gagne would get a save.
- Dodger shortstops in July (mostly Rafael Furcal, with Dee Gordon and Jamey Carroll mixed in) have four singles in 37 at-bats with three walks, hitting .108/.175/.108
- Clayton Kershaw has scored seven runs this season. The last pitcher to score more than that was Darren Dreifort, with 10 in 1998.
- Carroll has eight RBI this season in 311 plate appearances. He is on pace for 14 RBI in 548 PA. The fewest RBI by a Dodger with at least 400 PA is 16, held jointly by Tony Smith in 1910 and Dave Roberts in 2003.
- The Dodgers have won nine of their last 13 games at Chase Field.
- The Diamondbacks called up first baseman Brandon Allen and activated infielder Geoff Blum from the disabled list, and outrighted Juan Miranda and designated Wily Mo Pena for assignment. SB Nation Arizona has more details.

McCourt's "piggy bank"
In a new report (the preliminary version on Dodgers Blog before he amplifies and edits it for the paper), Shaikin quotes a new MLB court filing claiming that McCourt would benefit personally from the loan he has arranged:
“Clearly, Mr. McCourt has not allowed these bankruptcy cases to change the practice of using the [Dodgers] as his personal piggy bank,” the filing read.
It redacts the amount that MLB says McCourt took from the Dodgers for his personal use, but some source has told Shaikin it’s $200 million.

I read it
it is redacted and it is unclear what they are talking about. Also as Shaikin reported and for most folks the most important, for now, in MLB’s objection, it has stated that Court would retain oversight over the Dodgers (at least until a trustee is or is ever appointed).
I am confused. You would think the hedge fund who gave McCourt the loan would make sure to include language Frank McCourt couldn’t divert it to his own personal needs.
No
the belief has been that he has been diverting money from the Dodgers right now without the DIP financing.
The profit part
comes from how he is personally guaranteeing some of the financing (by putting up his assets (or other McCourt businesses not involved in this bankruptcy, this last part is a guess.)
BTW
I still think the Dodgers “lose” this DIP financing issue but then it will be MLB’s move to decide what to do next.
They may be waiting to “read the tea leaves” – see if Judge Gross’ language in his ruling over DIP financing gives any hint or clue as to how he thinks McCourt has been comporting himself. E.g. if he says he’s giving the financing to MLB partly because he agrees with them that McCourt can’t be trusted with the money (rather than simply because MLB’s financing is less costly to the creditors), they mioght be emboldened to ask for Schieffer to be put back in charge. Or if he especially stresses that he is doing so only because MLB’s financing is less costly and is making no other judgment, they might hold back until they can prepare a more thorough case (or never).
In the transcript that dealt mainly about this issue since it was the discovery motion
He pretty much said that those issues may come to his attention at some point and he only denied the motion since he felt they were not appropriate at this time.
What could happen:
1. MLB DIP financing gets chosen
2. Bankruptcy Court assigns a trustee (some third party not affiliated with either side)
3. MLB asks Trustee to reinstate MLB monitor,
4. Trustee examines all the businesses that filed bankruptcy to determine next steps
This scenario sounds plausible and likely, given what we know to date. Unfortunately, Frank is likely to be advising his lawyers to think up every which way to slow things down to prevent MLB getting ahold of the team. At this point, he’s really an idiot, since he’d get most money from selling the team sooner, before frittering much of the value away in legal proceedings. That’s what Jamie is afraid of, too.
The one case I think he has a chance of getting settled to his benefit, probably via a settlement rather than in court, is his suit against the Boston lawyer who screwed up his agreement with Jamie. The divorce judge has ruled that since it says the Dodgers were not excepted from the community property, it stands. So, eventually, divorce court will likely rule that the Dodgers are community property, which would mean the McCourts would have to sell the team.
But I think Frank has a good case to show that the Boston lawyer screwed up, and that the agreement was meant to do the opposite. But he probably will only get to have this suit heard after everything else is decided, so the damage is known. The trouble, from Frank’s point of view, is that by that time he’ll never get the Dodgers back, even if their loss is one of the consequences of the screwup. I’m sure that one of the reasons he’s so motivated to hang on is his hope that he’ll still be there when this suit is finally up for trial (which hastens settlement). God forbid. But he sure knows how to drag it out.

Short Sale...
It seems pretty obvious that the McCourts have been yanking every single bit of equity out of the team since day one. Their goal is to take the equity (and then some), file for divorce and convince everyone Frank needs more cash to get rid of Jamie. Eventually (and the longer they hang in there the more cash they can “withdraw”) they will give up the team for $0…which will be more than it is worth considering the debt. MLB will be happy to forgive their debt just to be rid of them. Then they can get back together and enjoy their Swiss bank accounts (Aruba? Yemen? I don’t know!). They are bad for sure…but not stupid!

Girlfriend out of the hospital after a 20 hour ordeal that included a 17 hour wait in the ER waiting room. I’m exhausted and I can’t imagine how exhausted she is.
But, seriously, ER waiting rooms overnight are among the saddest places in Earth.

man that totally sucks. Hope she's okay now at least (and had good insurance!)
Hospitals in general are depressing, ERs even more so.

Nobody's mentioned this yet

#Dodgers send down A.J. Ellis to make room on roster for Rod Barajas.
Bleh.
Bleh indeed.
I stopped hoping for a Navarro DFA about a week ago. (Though it could still happen end of the month, or Barajas could be traded to someone for a C prospect.) Meh. I expect AJ will be back again this summer.

AJ just hasn't done anything to impress
I don’t care if his OBP is 350 if his slugging is 222

Best defensive catcher we have
Works well with the staff, especially Bills. His offense may be pathetic but it’s acceptable, IMO, when pitching is this team’s strength.

rod is going to be getting most of the starts anyways

its not so much that I"m trying to say its a good decision
but it leaves me totally nonpullsed, and I"m preemptively arguing against the overreaction that is going to happen when everyone wakes up and finds out.

I agree it's not some kind of no brainer decision to keep ellis up or that he's been ripping the ball
but Navarro, a couple of game winning hits notwithstanding, has been awful and doesn’t get on base at all. Ellis has been solid behind the plate, and pitchers seem to fare well with him back there – that to me is not inconsequential. We’ll see. It’s true RoBar will get more of the starts and he does well behind the plate (if not at it), so maybe if he catches Bills he’ll do okay. But i’ll be curious to see if there’s a difference in the wrong direction without him.
But yeah it’s not like we’re talking about someone who;s been lighting the world on fire, either…

I think that we should have kept Ellis because we have to seriously look at him as an option for 2012 starting catcher.
This thought makes me extremely sad.

Doesn't matter what Navarro does
unless he gets hurt. A month and a half from now is 9/1 and rosters expand.

hard to know for sure, or what to count on or expect…

We already know that this team is not that good, needs a ton of improvements, and isn’t gonna drop a ton of payroll. Barring some kind of miracle we probably don’t have more than 20 million to spend on a 1B, 2B, SS, C, LF, 5th starter, an entire bullpen, and maybe a 3B if Uribe keeps this crap up. Costs are gonna have to get cut somewhere so Ellis might as well be a place to start looking.

Padres tanked
in the 12th inning to the Giants. Now 5-1 SF in the 12th after Padres bullpen imploded. This harpoons our chances of winning the division. :)
It's not over yet though! But it is over for anyone who bet the under... ;-)
Meh, they’ll probably split that series. Padres are going to finish last anyway, I’m convinced of that at this point.

Can't believe the Under didn't hit
1-0 in the 9th. Now the bearded one in to close out a 6-1 game. Giants have to be pissed that he needed to pitch with a 5 run 12th inning lead.
Fuck the Giants
They should have used him earlier in the tie game on the road anyway.

if nothing else they blew through their bullpen pointlessly
meh, I still stand by my split prediction. Dodgers need to sweep or at least win 2 out of 3 anyway or we can nudge even closer to seller status.
