Dodgers Open Series With Diamondbacks
The Dodgers open up a series with the Diamondbacks tonight at Dodger Stadium, the final leg of their nine-game homestand, and the start of trade deadline weekend. Which may (or may not) explain why Eugenio Velez is playing second base tonight rather than Jamey Carroll.
Ted Lilly had a season-high nine strikeouts against Arizona 12 days ago, but he also got touched for four runs in his 6 2/3 innings. His mound opponent tonight, Josh Collmenter, made was a winner in his first major league start on May 14 at Dodger Stadium, pitching six scoreless innings. Chad Billingsley took the loss that night despite giving up just one hit.

Notes
- The Dodgers announced that Carlos Monasterios, who made just one start in Triple A this season back in April, underwent Tommy John surgery on July 15, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.
- Casey Blake will play another rehab game tonight with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Saturday. Juan Uribe, who has battled a hip flexor for the better part of a week, could be placed on the DL, also per Hernandez.
- The Dodgers have lost two of three games at home to Arizona this season but are 19-7 against the Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium dating back to 2008.
- Arizona has won eight of their last 12 games, including taking two of three in San Diego on the first leg of their nine-game NL West road trip that will take them to San Francisco after this series.
- Old friend Yhency Brazoban, who pitched in six games for the Diamondbacks this season, has been sold to the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in Japan.
- Arizona made another move, though it doesn't affect this weekend series, acquiring Ryan Langerhans for the always valuable cash considerations.
- Tonight is LA Kings night at Dodger Stadium. Before the game, Dustin Penner, Jarret Stoll and Trevor Lewis will throw out a ceremonial first pitch to teammates Scott Parse, Rich Clune and Alec Martinez.

Good gosh, it’s Jimenez. You have him cheap for the next three years, and I’ll bet you can work out a deal to build a rotation around him for a generation.
Frankly, the Dodgers aren’t buyers, but if I’m Colletti, I’m calling and asking if there’s any deal that can be worked out. If he’s on the block…. sheesh.

The very fact that Ubaldo is even being dangled is making other teams skeptical, like there is some key information missing.

The owner should fire Wade before approving this trade given what he’s received from the Phil’s for Oswalt/Pence arguably their two best players.
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
Ed Wade worked for the Phillies, and seems more concerned with his ex-employers will being then his own teams. The owner should really have a problem with this.

i doubt any GM would be willing to put their job on the line like that. i dont know anything about these prospects, so i don’t really know if they’re “shit” or not, but assuming you’re right, this is more likely just a bad deal.
they aren't "shit" exactly,
but they shouldn’t be centerpieces for a Hunter Pence caliber player. They are B prospects in my opinion.

prospects are overvalued. When young, cost controlled players are being traded for A ball players, and free agent to be back of the rotation starters, you have an overvaluation of prospects right now.

Changing the subject
Dusty isn’t the sharpest strategic tool in the dugout. Cincy up 3-2 on SF, two out bottom of the 6th, runner on first, he lets Dontrelle bat for himself. He is a very good hitting pitcher, but he grounds out. He’s already thrown 103 pitches. But this isn’t the dumb thing that Dusty did. Top of the 7th, SF pitcher’s spot due to lead off. If Dusty were smart, he would send Willis to the mound and have him at least warm up, and wait to see who the Giant PH is. Maybe the Gnats send up a righty, and Dusty can go to the mound and remove Willis for a righty pitcher and force the Gnats to burn a righty PH. But no, Dusty had the righty Masset start the 7th, the Gnats sent up lefty Nate Schierholz to pinch hit. He made out, but don’t you want to make the Gnats burn a player anyway?
