Dodgers Open Series With Diamondbacks

Casey Blake could return to the Dodgers as soon as Saturday.

The Dodgers open up a series with the Diamondbacks tonight at Dodger Stadium, the final leg of their nine-game homestand, and the start of trade deadline weekend. Which may (or may not) explain why Eugenio Velez is playing second base tonight rather than Jamey Carroll.

Ted Lilly had a season-high nine strikeouts against Arizona 12 days ago, but he also got touched for four runs in his 6 2/3 innings. His mound opponent tonight, Josh Collmenter, made was a winner in his first major league start on May 14 at Dodger Stadium, pitching six scoreless innings. Chad Billingsley took the loss that night despite giving up just one hit.

Notes

  • The Dodgers announced that Carlos Monasterios, who made just one start in Triple A this season back in April, underwent Tommy John surgery on July 15, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.
  • Casey Blake will play another rehab game tonight with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Saturday. Juan Uribe, who has battled a hip flexor for the better part of a week, could be placed on the DL, also per Hernandez.
  • The Dodgers have lost two of three games at home to Arizona this season but are 19-7 against the Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium dating back to 2008.
  • Arizona has won eight of their last 12 games, including taking two of three in San Diego on the first leg of their nine-game NL West road trip that will take them to San Francisco after this series.
  • Old friend Yhency Brazoban, who pitched in six games for the Diamondbacks this season, has been sold to the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in Japan.
  • Arizona made another move, though it doesn't affect this weekend series, acquiring Ryan Langerhans for the always valuable cash considerations.
  • Tonight is LA Kings night at Dodger Stadium. Before the game, Dustin Penner, Jarret Stoll and Trevor Lewis will throw out a ceremonial first pitch to teammates Scott Parse, Rich Clune and Alec Martinez.

Changing the subject

Dusty isn’t the sharpest strategic tool in the dugout. Cincy up 3-2 on SF, two out bottom of the 6th, runner on first, he lets Dontrelle bat for himself. He is a very good hitting pitcher, but he grounds out. He’s already thrown 103 pitches. But this isn’t the dumb thing that Dusty did. Top of the 7th, SF pitcher’s spot due to lead off. If Dusty were smart, he would send Willis to the mound and have him at least warm up, and wait to see who the Giant PH is. Maybe the Gnats send up a righty, and Dusty can go to the mound and remove Willis for a righty pitcher and force the Gnats to burn a righty PH. But no, Dusty had the righty Masset start the 7th, the Gnats sent up lefty Nate Schierholz to pinch hit. He made out, but don’t you want to make the Gnats burn a player anyway?

6'4 220

thats a big catcher.

Yeah his numbers look pretty good.

by Joey Joe on Jul 29, 2011 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions

good k rates, good bb rates. switch hitter…has power projection…i like. top 10 prospect for us.

15th round out of HS?

Surprised he signed.
Good for the Dodgers

by Joey Joe on Jul 29, 2011 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

2006 draft was awful..

outside of Clayton Kershaw.

The only MLB’ers:

  1. Kershaw
  2. Erickson (maybe)
  3. Paul Goldschmidt

by Joey Joe on Jul 29, 2011 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions

striking on kershaw

really makes that draft a huge fucking success.

by npurcell on Jul 29, 2011 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions

well it is better than 2007

probably no major leaguers from the 2007 draft

by Joey Joe on Jul 29, 2011 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions

anytime you get a pitcher

who is competing for the fucking cy young at age 23, you hit the jackpot from that draft.

by npurcell on Jul 29, 2011 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

oops try that again

1st round – kershaw
16th round – Erickson
49th round – Goldschmidt

In person he looks like the kind of guy that you hated in High School.

have you seen him in person?

I dunno, but maybe he has incriminating photos out there with Affliction shirts and orange skin. He just looks normal.

Yes, I was at the Dodger Camp in Jan for the Prospects held at the ravine.

I was exaggerating as I didn’t hate anyone in high school. Tall, well built, lean muscular, kind of v shaped, did not look like a catcher.

Will Savage is in Oklahoma right now for the birth of his first child. Had to miss his start.

by wukunlin on Jul 29, 2011 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe Ed Wade is just reaquiring prospects he liked when he drafted them. Has he been gone too long for that assumption to be true?

guess he made the right decision not signing with us.

it takes some guts to not sign out of high school..

You’re not only banking on getting picked higher in 2-3 years…but if you do sign out of high school the mlb team will still pay for your college.

by Joey Joe on Jul 29, 2011 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Not really, but he was a really decent player in college. Not sure of his ML projection.

Really good college hitter.

Hell, we only got 1 guy with any power, he’ll fit right in!

by keithc13 on Jul 29, 2011 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Good contact, not so much power, in today’s world, I’ll take it, aint’ no way he’s coming here for Rafy.

Somehow the haul that Houston got

does not inspire me that the Dodgers could get anyone remotely useful in 2012 for Kuroda

what Wade's doing...with this and Oswalt last year..

reminds me of Kevin Mchale giving Garnett away to the Celtics…and Jerry West giving Gasol away to the Lakers.

by Joey Joe on Jul 29, 2011 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll take the best player

even if he’s in A ball. I know Ned won’t, but I would. It’s building value. This is different from the Pence deal in many ways.
