Dodgers Look To Snap Four-Game Skid

Hiroki Kuroda's last six starts: 1.72 ERA, one win.

The Dodgers have lost 14 of their last 20 games, including losing their last four games. Tonight they turn to the last pitcher to get a win, Hiroki Kuroda. The right-hander has just one win in his last six starts, despite a 1.72 ERA, and nine unintentional walks and 28 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings. Here are some pregame notes:

  • James Loney has 32 hits in his last 80 at-bats, hitting .400/.422/.513, with six doubles (half of his season total) in his last 21 games
  • Aaron Miles is hitting .361/.389/.437 on the road this season, but just .275/.283/.312 at home
  • Rafael Furcal's 28 career stolen bases against the Mets are tied for his second-most against any opponent (with Florida), behind just the 31 career steals against the Padres
  • Juan Uribe is hitting .240/.321/.360 at home this season, and that is his good split.
  • Jamey Carroll will earn $50,000 with his next plate appearance.
  • Tony Gwynn Jr. has batted leadoff 20 times. In his first plate appearance in those games, he is hitting .316/.350/.421, but in the rest of his PA in those games he is hitting .217/.299/.300
  • Matt Kemp was caught stealing on April 20 against Atlanta, but since then has 16 stolen bases without getting thrown out, in 68 games. Oh yeah, he also has 19 home runs during that span, too.
  • Andre Ethier's last home run off a left-hander was August 25, 2010 off Randy Wolf, 141 plate appearances ago.
  • A.J. Ellis has started three straight, and seven of the last 10 games
  • Dioner Navarro has two hits in his last 18 at-bats.
  • Trent Oeltjen is hitless in his last 10 at-bats.
  • Marcus Thames hasn't played in the field since June 24, 10 games ago
  • Eugenio Velez is Eugenio Velez

read this
Bruce Chen limited the White Sox to one run over six innings in a victory Wednesday.
Chen is going to draw the interest of contenders if he keeps this up. He’s 5-2 with a 3.26 ERA in his 10 starts for the Royals. Kansas City will likely be open to moving him since he’s a free agent at the end of the year.

What kind of haul could KC expect for Chen? Not a bad trade chit right there..

Ichiro Suzuki
Just do it already. Ichiro’s an unconventional pick, since he doesn’t hit many home runs during the year, but we’re all familiar with the stories surrounding his batting practice exploits, so it’s time to put this to the test before his skills have completely eroded. I guarantee that if Ichiro were to participate in the derby, it would get the highest ratings of all time. People want to know. I want to know. I hate the Home Run Derby, and I want to know.

by underdog on Jul 6, 2011 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Why do you think that? Just curious...

I mean Ned paid up for Navarro. This feels more like, Dodger coaches wanting a catcher who can get on base and liking how he handles the pitching staff. Don’t know why Ned would be pro AJ over Dioner, per se…?

Is that after the 2012 season, or this coming off season?

Meh, I don’t see Ned meddling here, but I get your point. Just don’t think that’s the deal. I think they’ll either keep AJ if they like him, next year, or lose him, regardless… but yeah maybe now is the time to see if he can stick, since either way Navarro is gone after this year.

That doesn’t mean much. This team will just discard players it doesn’t like and doesn’t have options, just like any other teams.

For your statement to be true, I think it has to be that Ned feels that A.J. is a better player than Navarro and needs to play over him.

by Tripon on Jul 6, 2011 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t see the reasoning behind the statement. The manager and bench coach dictate the lineup, the front office determines what options the coaches have for that lineup. Sure, sometimes they get input from other places, but it doesn’t seem to have a purpose.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

by G.Scott on Jul 6, 2011 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Seems reasonable. Can this man catch in the major leagues or can’t he. But, if Ned is meddling in the lineups, it means he knows this season is over and he’s not concerned about winning as much as he is planning for next year.

I said two things earlier: the most important of which was that a tight 12-6 curveball is still one of the most effective offspeed pitches; the second was that if it breaks too much it’s less effective, not more.

Yeah it’s filthy. You just can’t have more than (my guess) 18" or so of break or it’s too big. JMac and Bills (at first) seemed like they threw theirs with 2.5-3 feet of break.

Felix also threw it in the mid 80s. I don’t think he throws that pitch anymore.

JMac had 2 above off speed pitches. I really think if hes ever made into a 1 inning reliever, he could dominate.

by G.Scott on Jul 6, 2011 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Just listened to A's flagship station, the relatively new sports station 95.7 FM

usually they are pretty benign, and there’s more A’s talk than Giants. But whatever douchebag i was just listening to, after talking A’s and Giants, changed subject to the “mess in LA” and basically after opining about it he said, “We’ll see who gets ownership, whether it be McCourt or someone else, but I don’t see how they can let him keep that franchise — but I hope they do. Keep it up Frank McCourt, Drag this on as long as possible, run that team into the ground. I am loving it. It’s great for the Giants.”

I have to hand it to KNBR (the Giants station), usually when they talk about it it’s been in classier ways, saying it’s bad for the rivalry if the Dodgers are bankrupt, and it’s not as much fun, and it’s bad for baseball, etc, usually that kind of take.

Anyway, whatever, but this guy sounded so douchey about it, was the first time in awhile this whole thing made me upset again. I don’t like being in this situation, and I don’t want it to drag on for a long time. I’d love to see the team compete next year and then I can drop this guy a line and say howdy.

hah, I know, it's pretty weird.

They just picked up the A’s this year and changed formats (was a Country station). Ratings are pretty low, apparently (ranked 31st in the Bay Area earlier this year!) so I guess that means not too many people are listening to this guy (Chris Townsend I believe). Which is nice.

Maybe he’ll be flattered I was listening at least.

Who, among other things, claims that if the Warren Commission can get done in a few months and if the map lines in Europe and the Middle East can be re-drawn post-WWI in weeks, then there is no excuse for the MLB taking 2 years to make a decision on whether the A’s can move to San Jose or not.

If he said what you said he did today, that makes this about 2 full weeks of the same rant every other day or so. He is the only person I’ve ever listened to that has literally made me turn off the radio and go silent during the rest of my drive home. It’s unbelievable.
