Tommy John Surgery For Rubby De La Rosa
As expected, the Dodgers announced today that Rubby De La Rosa will need Tommy John surgery. De La Rosa said he was told recovery would take nine to 12 months, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. But for all intents and purposes, it's tough to plan for 2012 including any sort of a contribution from Rubby.
Tonight in San Diego, Hiroki Kuroda looks to snap his four-game losing streak. He has faced the Padres once this season, and came within one out of a complete game shutout on April 9 at Petco Park. This is also the site of Kuroda's major league debut, a 7-1 win on April 4, 2008.
Lineups
Andre Ethier is out of tonight's lineup for a yet unknown reason. For the second time this season, Aaron Miles is batting third.

I hear Nolij is faking his birthday on facebook
Only a Cal grad…
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
Ethier was ‘angry’ with the Dodgers yesterday. Since I’m inclined to believe Roberto, maybe he said something he shouldn’t have.
Is there anything more on that other than Roberto's gossipy tweet?
Just curious. Could also have been a misunderstood thing, like Ethier saying “Man, the Dodgers are bumming me out” meaning this has been a horribly depressing season…
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
arent people allowed to be upset with their company for random reasons..
even if said company pays them millions of dollars a year?
Yes. And the company may discipline them.
Not saying that’s what is happening here.

Roberto posted an update
I’ll post pictures and videos from yesterdays trip to San Diego tomorrow. Didn’t have time to post. Here’s one though. Andre Ethier entering Petco Park. Oh and about Ethier, what do you want me to say? Like I mentioned yesterday at Facebook/Twitter, Ethier made comments toward ownership and his contract status. I have video of that. I don’t think I’ll post that. He was signing autographs outside of Petco Park. He was talking towards the fans and most likely didn’t think there was anyone recording the little chat. I just don’t want to be a jerk towards the moody guy.
Ethier was upset, but I’m not going to post this thing that nobody would know about if I didn’t mention it.
Roberto's
gig is not to break stories (though I agree why say anything at all) but he has his niche market of posting player signings, bobblehead shots and talking about his road trips to see the team.
And there is a market of Dodger internet fandom that doesn’t want to read lots of words about the Dodgers but just want to know where they can get Steve Yeagar’s autograph.
So I can see why he wouldn’t want to start something (but then don’t say anything about it and certainly don’t repeat it the next day and not say anything about it).
that’s my only beef. If you’re a team photographer and accidentally get Kemp’s wiener in a shot, you delete it. You don’t put it up on your mantle and talk about it every day in public.

If he thinks his blog
is the wrong place to report it, he could have shut up about it, e-mailed an audio file to Eric and let Eric decided if he wanted to use a quote from an unnamed source.

Roberto has become
gun shy because of the Dave Stewart video he posted, which got picked up somewhere and caused Stewart to issue an apology/retraction/clarification or something? If so, he should never have mentioned the Ethier thing to begin with.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Agreed
with both you and Josie on this one. BTW with this:
Ethier was upset, but I’m not going to post this thing that nobody would know about if I didn’t mention it.
I was paraphrasing what I think Roberto is doing here.
It was just some quick joke comment by Stewart at Dodger Stadium (I think he was signing autographs) and he said something like “the Dodgers need new owners” and laughed.
He made some joke about someone considering signing an extension after the Dodgers got a real owner, something like that. Roberto was videoing – or someone else was and sent it to Roberto – and he published it on his blog.

this can be a positive in a couple ways..
#1. It should make the decision to punt 2012 much much easier. If you didnt have any expectations of being good (I didnt), then losing Rubby doesnt hurt much.
#2. Plenty of guys come back from TJ.
The only real downside:
If Rubby comes back and the Dodgers make him a reliever.
That would suck.
service time thing..
is worse.
But seems most guys that come back from TJ do throw full season workloads
Becker, table for one.

Of course just guessing
I do believe the non-tendering and letting Martin go shook up Ethier. Why, I don’t know, outside of being teammates for the last 5 years, not sure why it affected him so much. But clearly it has based on his early comments. I also think this could be a result not having a baseball agent/advisor (he is represented by CAA) so maybe he doesn’t have someone to be a soundboard for him on baseball stuff.
He has always been a player who wears his emotions on his sleeve and I think he probably just said something like I hope they straighten out the ownership mess but again, who knows where he will be in 2012.
To be a bench bat late inning defensive replacement…fine.
Not to take a full season of ABs though.
that would suck even if the team wins 70 or so
If they non-tender him, let him go. There is no use for a weak hitting first basemen here. And I’m one of they guys that defended him earlier in the year. He jusat keeps getting weaker and weaker.
Baseball is a game, and games are supposed to be fun.
I had not even checked his season stats in a while, and I think I glanced over a comment briefly last night that mentioned his OBP was under .300, and it was kind of startling to look at. .253/.298/.322
Ouch. Hopefully we can get a bat this offseason to play 1B or LF and play Sands at the other. If we can do that and resign Kuroda I think we could be a good team next year.
Agreed
Unless the team goes all out and signs like Prince or something, I’d rather see them just give the 1B slot to someone with a long shot of being a contributor, like Van Slyke (out of ST) or Songco (around the ASB if he handles AA).
If we could get a bat like Cuddyer in free agency I’d be very happy. I don’t think anyone of those guys you listed will be ready or an improvement over Loney. Cuddyer seems like a good fit to me since he is a good hitter and can play multiple positions(OF,1B,2B,3B). Adding both him and Sands would make us a much better team.
OTOH
Cuddyer is having a career year, but is a lifetime 111 OPS+ guy who will be 33 next year, could be passing his peak. He’s a pending FA?
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Yep.
Cuddyer is a no glove, questionable bat guy. He’d be a short term bandage but committing to him at all is just asking for dead weight on the payroll.
@andrewngrant
With Fielder unlikely to sign here he seems like the next best FA. This is a really weak FA market after Pujols,Fielder, and Reyes.
Like I said, as long as you don’t commit to him. He’s having a career year this year but he’s only been an average player one other time.
@andrewngrant
i think A-Ram and Cuddyer since you brought them both up before will get 3yrs with option for a 4th on this free agent market…and if you’re the Dodgers you dont make those deals given where the team is currently.
Different
personalities, Loney has never exhibited his emotions and pretty much has been a company guy throughout his career. Whose to say he wasn’t bothered by it but it was Ethier who spoke out about it.
OK I got here late. What are we bitching about today?

Dan Uggla, a tale of two seasons
First 86 games: .173/.241/.327, 12 HR, 29 RBI, 36 runs, in 348 PA
Last 24 games: .352/.422/.736, 10 HR, 20 RBI, 19 runs, in 102 PA (including tonight; he has a 24-game hitting streak)
It probably coincides with when i finally dropped him from my fantasy team.
I replaced him with Ackley who’s doing great…but i knew Uggla would eventually get hot but didnt want to weather the storm.
Looks like the entrance to Fantasyland at Disneyland.

Its funny how quickly Vegas hotels seem decrepit. I was there five years ago and it seemed hopelessly outdated already — and it was only built in 1990.
The only thing shorter than a casino’s lifespan of being cool is the distance between remakes of movies nowadays.
Correct.
A resident told me they finally closed the Sahara recently. Can’t see how it kept going that long.
Is the decision to build the Trump on the back edge of the property instead of up on the Strip the dumbest ever? All that vacant land right up on LV Blvd. where the New Frontier used to be. I’ve never set foot in the place.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
More and more owners are deciding to build on the back half of their properties because they want the tourists to come onto their properties to see the extravagant shows out front. Steve Wynn started this with the Wynn Resort (his resort is still fairly close to the Strip but he had the show facing his hotel). Wynn learned the hard way with the Bellagio, Mirage, and Treasue Island. Tons of people would go there to see the shows but would never step into their casinos.
That’s fine when there’s something in front, but there’s nothing between Trump tower and the strip but a hell of a lot of asphalt, which is really hot much of the year.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Mirage and Caesers are older
And still in good shape. Excalibur owners just let it decay.

Harrahs has gone through some pretty tough times in the last 10 years.
It’s possible Harrahs is better off financially (all casinos have taken huge hits), but MGM pretty much controls the major casinos in Vegas.
I’m not as in the know as I used to be. When I was working (before getting sick) I had lots of dealings with the top guys in most casinos, so I got to know first hand who controlled the town. It has been 5 or 6 years since I was in that position though.
Harrah’s seems to buy another casino on the strip every week. Other than Bellagio, they own everything surrounding it (Ceasers, Bally’s, Planet Hollywood, et al.)
Not sure who owns the new ones as part of City Center.
by Michael White on Aug 2, 2011 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions
MGM owns City Center. MGM has focused their sites on the other side of The Strip.
They own Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, MGM Grand, NY NY, Monte Carlo Aria, and City Center which are all in close proximity. They also own Mirage, Treasure Island, Bellagio, and Circus Circus.
It really is becoming a two company town though.
It’s funny how each company is consolidating power on their side of the street.
It’s really personal preference for me. I like the Harrah’s properties a bit better.
by Michael White on Aug 2, 2011 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions
I ran a lot of projects for Mirage Resorts, MGM Resorts, and the Mandalay Group, so I have always stuck with them. Being able to get comped rooms, food, and shows at those resorts probably helped a bunch.
When MGM went around merging and buying all of these companies I still got the same work.
Harrah’s lower end is Harrah’s and Imperial Palace though. MGM’s is Excalibur, then Luxor.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Imperial Palace is a shithole, but Harrah’s itself is fine. I like it better than Excalibur and Luxor
by Michael White on Aug 2, 2011 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions
I’ve only stayed at Luxor once, maybe two years ago, and I like the Tower room I had just fine. But I think they did themselves a disservice as they lessen the “Egyptianness” of the interior. It’s a fucking pyramid!
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Never stayed at the MGM. I tend to stay lower end. For MGM properties, my experience says something like Excalibur < Luxor < NYNY < Monte Carlo < Mirage, but some of those difference aren’t very much, for example NYNY vs. Monte Carlo is probably a “to each their own” choice.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Skimming in big Vegas casinos hasn’t been happening since before you were born. The mega corps don’t want to kill the golden egg laying goose.

Rob Neyer
has an interview with Shawn Green , who’s pimping a book, up. Here something you don’t hear ballplayers talking about every day:
Green: I did talk with Carlos [Delgado] quite a bit. He’s a bright guy. We actually exchanged different books. He introduced me to an author, Robin Sharma, a Canadian guy who wrote The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari and another book, The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO. I exposed Carlos to Siddhartha and numerous other books. So we talked quite a bit about it.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
This would be interesting
@dodgerscribe: Educated guess on my part, but I’m predicting Nate Eovaldi will start next Tuesday night against Phillies.
Did you agree with him when he said Billingsley couldn’t pitch with a lead?
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
News? He called it “an educated guess”. He’s speculating, just like you or I would, admittedly with the addition of things he’s heard that are unpublished.
I think it would be a terrible move, because he’d be on the 25-man, needs his innings limited, and would have to stay on it until 9/1 to not burn an option year, when he doesn’t even have to be added to the 40-man until after next season. Why rush it unless you think his arm isn’t going to last anyway?
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
It’s not technically ‘news’, but with Tony’s connections, it’s pretty close to it.
I’ll admit, the move is exciting for me. I don’t feel like debating its merits, but reading between the lines, Ned is likely going for the highest ceiling arm that close to the majors. Eveland and Ely are essentially proven failures.

I had Five Guys today for the first time. It was pretty good. Nothing that I’d obsess over and better than most fast food.
But, man, its weird to go anywhere in New Mexico where they don’t have green chile to add on their burgers.
For me,
In and Out has better burgers, but I like 5 Guy’s fries better. Also, In and Out is much more affordable.
When I had 5 Guys Burgers they just tasted like home made burgers…so I didnt think it was all the hype said it was. I agree their fries were really good and they do give you alot of food for a $8 dollar meal.
Home made burgers, done right, should be the best. If a restaurant has a burger that tastes home made, that should be a positive.
