Dodgers Monday Links
Here are some Dodger-related links for a Monday...
- In Ken Gurnick's Sunday game recap on MLB.com, Chad Billingsley said of his two home runs given up, "You know it right when you release it and say, 'Uh oh, please take it.' "
- With Jered Weaver signing a five-year, $85 million contract extension, Jon Weisman at Dodger Thoughts provided a tale of the tape comparing Weaver and Clayton Kershaw. "Kershaw is ahead of Weaver's pace, meaning he's going to be owed more money each step of the way if he keeps up his trend of performance," noted Weisman.
- Casey Blake has been told by doctors that his neck condition could worsen if he continues to play, wrote Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. Sounds like an easy disabled list decision to me, especially since the Dodgers effectively have a two-man bench right now.
- Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times weighs in on whether or not the Dodgers will bring back Juan Rivera, he of the "professional at-bat."
- Chris Jackson, the Isotopes beat writer for the Albuquerque Examiner, wrote a feature on catcher Tim Federowicz for MiLB.com. "I guess there is a little bit of pressure to show fans what I've got. But I think it'll eventually work out the way the Dodgers want it to," said Federowicz. A free Dr. Pepper to Tommy Blackjack for the link.
- Rafael Furcal, who is hitting .216/.280/.351 in 18 games with St. Louis, sprained his thumb in a fall at Wrigley Field on Saturday. Furcal missed both games over the weekend and as Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted, there is no set timetable for Furcal's return. The Dodgers begin a three-game series with the Cardinals Monday night.
- In the next week or so, there will be an iPhone SB Nation app available, for free, in iTunes. Here is a video demo:

Fuck the iphone
what about an ipad app? I need my Z key
It's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'
It's what you're doin' when you're doin' what you look like you're doin'!
I know they are working on that as well. I’m not sure, but I think the next priority will be an app for other smart phones, specifically the Android, before the iPad app.

the app looks good
though the guy doing the demo needs to learn how to appear excited
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
you just asked a tech nerd to sound excited, which I don’t think happens unless Doctor Who appeared in front of them

I refuse to believe that SBN doesn’t have someone who can read a script and do a voiceover without sounding like they have a sinus infection.
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
Just wait until this offseason when I get the TBLA podcast off the ground.

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
It's funny you say that...
I actually have really bad allergies but am stubborn to a fault about taking medicine regularly or getting shots. Ergo I typically have/sound like I have a sinus infection about 2/3 of the year.
As far as a script goes, there actually was one, but I’m not quite a product demo pro to the point where I could navigate the iPhone and read it at the same time so it was basically all off the cuff. I’ll try it con gusto next time though. Be happy you’re not subjected to the college football podcast I do in my spare time!

maybe one day i’ll get a new phone. I still have one of the “old” cell phones where you have to click the “3” button 3 times to get the letter F

i listened to all 18 innings of that game saturday. it gave me a great chance to memorize all of them.
Oh, is that actually from a commercial? It is not embedded in my brain

I switched over to the Rockies’ broadcast in something like the 4th or 5th

I hate that fucking ad for one big reason
The part where the woman says. “My co worker teased me for using my old cell phone at work. I would have texted him but I don’t get reception in the office.”
How can you use your phone if you don’t have reception?
It's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'

i've disliked wins
as soon as I read where Nolan Ryan went like 8-16 with an ERA under 3 back in like 1987 i think?
by Dodgerblue8188 on Aug 22, 2011 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions
Last guy to win 15 games with a 6 ERA was Wes Ferrell in 1938. Only other was Guy Bush, in 1930.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 22, 2011 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions
geez
usually it never seems that bad though…usually if a guy has that many wins he still has an ERA under 5. Never seen it that high

As stinky as that is his advanced TSL (4.32 / 4.07 / 4.06) is nothing close to that putrid which is why the Red Sox keep giving him the ball. That and the fact they have no one else.
I guess the real question is who was the last pitcher whose advanced TSL was over 5.00 and won 15 games?

Everyone needs a play index if they want to play at this level. I still feel it is what made BP a dinosaur.

Also, not being free, closing guarding the explanations and methodology behind several of the advanced stats, and having to release 87 revisions after the original PECOTA projections come out each year.

So I've never been to a Dodgers game in LA
never been past the Mississippie for that matter. Originally I had planned to take a trip out there next summer. But considering how the ownership situation is going it seems like i should put it off to at least 2013 :(
by Dodgerblue8188 on Aug 22, 2011 10:13 AM PDT reply actions
yea or Kershaw (if i get lucky)
But I really want a large crowd. I think one of the best parts about being at a game is to hear the crowd go crazy and would love to hear 50k+ fans screaming.

Kershaw
After tomorrow’s start, Kershaw’s most difficult matchup left is likely 9/3 @ ATL.
With a little bit of luck, he could finish 21-6 with a 2.48 ERA. That combined with at least 51 strikeouts over his next seven starts should get him the award. But it’ll take some regression from Doc of course.
add this one to the pile Eric

Great pull
Webster, another 21-year-old, has moved through the minor league system after being stolen in the 18th round of the 2008 draft out of a North Carolina high school. He was nabbed by the same scout, Lon Joyce, who also discovered outfield prospect Jerry Sands in the 25th round of the same draft.
Lon Joyce’s name has been tucked away.

Hard to be a Dodger fan today, normally the talk would be about extensions for Kemp and Kershaw but it all seems so pointless.
I’m shocked some rabid Dodger fan hasn’t simply shot the McCourts.
Daily News with a front page story about fan on fan violence. Guess Raider fans were living up to their rep.

you know what they say about assumptions
During Saturday’s attacks, a 24-year-old man, who reportedly was wearing a “F-the Niners” T-shirt, was shot several times in the stomach in the parking lot at Candlestick Park after the game and remained hospitalized in serious condition Sunday.

18th pick of the 3rd round, isn’t that like straight to the practice squad?
by Josie Becker on Aug 22, 2011 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions
not in football no
first 3 rounds are players expected to contribute immedietly. fourth rounders have a shot to start, maybe, fifth rounders are backups 6th and 7th rounders fight to make the team.
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
very few players are EVER taking in the supplemental draft
if the raiders don’t think pryor is a future starter then why waste next years 3rd rounder on him?
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
Raiders have lost their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in next year’s draft.
by silverwidow on Aug 22, 2011 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions
giving up that many draft picks tends to hurt
no matter how young the team is
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
If no other team places a bid on that player at an earlier spot, the team is awarded the player and has to give up an equivalent pick in the following year’s draft.3 (For example, FS Paul Oliver was taken by the San Diego Chargers in the fourth round of the Supplemental Draft in 2007; thus, in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Chargers forfeited a fourth-round pick.)
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
Well you give up next year’s [x] round pick if you take someone in [x] round of the supplemental draft.

seems like a lot
but they had no first round pick. needed to reach for something just to get some more talent on the roster..
any word on if they are aiming to try him at QB or at another position?

Softball game less then a week away.
The potluck food list is less then inspiring. Even if Craig is not going to play we need to have the group put some pressure on him to show so that the food list becomes inspiring. If I had known he was going to make Brownies yesterdayy, I’d have driven to South Bay Hell and watched Mr. Scott steal home.
