Dodgers Saturday Links: Vin Scully, Matt Kemp, James Loney, Starting Rotation
Some links for a Saturday involving the red-hot Dodgers and their Hall of Fame announcer:
- Vin Scully is coming back!
- Vin Scully Makes His Latest Memorable Call: I wrote a bit last night about Scully deciding to return on SB Nation Los Angeles.
- Jon Weisman wrote about Scully's return on Dodger Thoughts.
- Weisman also recapped Friday's game, which reminds me that in my late-night account of the game I neglected to mention the return of Kenley Jansen, who extended his scoreless streak to 17 innings. Welcome back, Kenley.
- Matt Kemp on reaching 30/30, per Tony Jackson of ESPN LA: "This is something I worked hard for in the offseason. Raul Mondesi was a great Dodger, and that is a big part of this. It's pretty special. To do it here at home, that makes it more special."
- Why Can't They All Wear Purple? In case you missed this last night, Rob Neyer at Baseball Nation noticed that James Loney has hit five of his seven home runs this season against the Rockies.
- Mike Petriello of Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness wrote about Loney's production against the Rockies as well.
- The Dodgers plan to go to a six-man rotation one time through, wrote AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Whenever Nathan Eovaldi, who has an innings limit, makes his last start, a yet-unnamed call-up will start the next day, giving the other starters an extra day of rest.
- Straight from shortstop Dee Gordon, on Twitter early Saturday morning: "Oh yea I passed my physical!!! I'll be back after a few rehab games."
- McCourt spillover: "It's no fun anymore, having to listen to it all the time, wondering what's going to happen next, what court date is set up next," Clayton Kershaw told ESPN on Friday. "It's no fun for us."
- A lack of work ethic led to Dioner Navarro getting the boot, wrote Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times.
- Chris Erskine of the LA Times recalls The Beatles' concert at Dodger Stadium, which was 45 years ago Sunday.
- Speaking of The Beatles, be sure to enter Xeifrank's contest. The person with the most points won today wins a CD.

There was a time when it was fun?!?

“It” being “life” – things in general. Life, playing baseball, playing for the Dodgers, all used to be fun when the McCourts’ divorce and the courts and the bankruptcy weren’t part of it.
If he's not having fun now
I can’t wait to see him pitch when he does have fun…

He's having fun
when he’s on the field. That’s the point he was trying to make.

I LAT’ed myself (more or less) in the last post, so here it is again. Apologies for repeating if anyone actually saw it there:
I was busy in the earlier part of the game and kept the TV on in the background like a radio, just popping over to see the occasional thing happening when I could. Only not much was happening, other than Gonzalez’ homer and Lilly being very stalwart. I heard Vin announcing he’d be returning next year – at least thought I did, and had to check later to verify it. But I must have missed some things in the background. I sat down just in time to see Loney’s homer, and looked up to what I thought would be Dodgers pulling ahead 2-1, only to see 5-1 on the screen! I was thrown for a loop – what? Huh? So I had to rewind back (I always record in case I can’t watch live) until the score showed 0-1, to follow everything through, double balks and all, I also followed along here at True Blue on my iPhone to get the reactions, though I couldn’t participate. Only what with all the new posts, when I had to go back to the main (mobile) page for what turned out to be the Scully update-continuation, the Kemp 30-30 update-continuation was already up although I hadn’t seen that happen on either my live listen nor my rewind-watch. So I knew what was coming (ah well), but it sure was beautiful when it happened. Actually, both homers were, Loney’s lefty-at-home-homer as well. Quite a night! I just couldn’t add my two cents, which weren’t needed. Anyway, they always come too late as my thumbs try to get there on my iPhone.
Comment on the SB Nation mobile app: it looks really nice. But, until such time as it may be able to do live updates (which I suspect may drain batteries as it checks every few seconds, so I wonder if this will really prove practical), here’s a request: since you have a Refresh button, which is great (so I don’t have to press to bring it to the top of the page first, as in Safari), please get it to work so that when it refreshes, it finds the same location. That way we could refresh when we want and carry on. The way it works now, in game threads, it’s far, far too tedious to scroll down every time. In Safari I have a clever add-on called "End of Page" that triggers in Bookmarks, which brings me to the end of the page immediately. So it’s an extra step, but far quicker than scrolling. That’s what I’ll go on using until there’s some way to refresh at same location or there’s a similar add-on for the SB Nation app.

Dodgers Lineup
Miles 2B, Loney 1B, Kemp CF, Rivera LF, Ethier RF, Blake 3B, Ellis C, Carroll SS, Billingsley P
I'm guessing Dee Gordon isn't starting his rehab tonight
He is here and will wear a mic during the game for Fox. And will also make an appearance in Anaheim at 6pm.
30/30
The Dodgers have this picture of Matt Kemp up on their site somewhere:

Sweet!

That is some home cooking
Using minorleaguecentral James Baldwin is the best 19 year at home (1.173) and the worst 19 year on the road (.423).

That’s either really high-quality or really low-quality/non-existent Annies in the Pioneer League.

I’d be very curious to know if Baldwin is staying with the same host family as Garcia did.

The article in the LA Times linked above has what seem like the right comments from Mattingly
and a bit more straightforward than I might have expected. For example:
Mattingly said he had spoken to Navarro about the problems.
“We were all up front,” Mattingly said. “We didn’t hide anything. We had talked about some of the issues we’d had awhile back, the way I felt about it. It got to a point where it was time.”
In fact, Mattingly said the Dodgers might have let go of Navarro sooner had Rod Barajas not been injured last month.
Contrast that to what Orlando Hudson was saying about Joe Torre.

This is only relevant if Navarro admits that Mattingly actually talked to him. At this point it is just Donny saying there was communication just as Torre said there was communication between him and Orlando.

I suppose so. Although I think Mattingly’s comments are a little more specific than Torre’s, IIRC.
