Chad Billingsley Opens Weekend Series In Atlanta
The Dodgers move on to Atlanta, looking for their 10th win in their last 11 games, opening a three-game weekend series with the Braves. Chad Billingsley has made three career starts in Atlanta, one in each of the last three seasons. He has struck out at least eight Braves each time:
August 16, 2010: Billingsley allowed one run on five hits in seven innings, with one walk and eight strikeouts. However, the Dodgers' 3-1 lead didn't hold up as Hong-Chih Kuo and Octavio Dotel coughed it up in the ninth inning.
August 2, 2009: Billingsley was dominant with nine strikeouts in five scoreless innings, but left early thanks to a cramp in his leg. He still got the win, however. This game was on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball and also featured a pinch-hit single by none other than Jason Schmidt.
April 19, 2008: Billingsley struck out eight in the first four innings and held a 1-0 lead, but the Braves rallied for four runs in the fifth inning to hang Billingsley with the loss. Billingsley struck out nine, and walked five, in his five-inning start.
That's a total of five runs in 17 innings (a 2.65 ERA) in Billingsley's three starts in Atlanta, with seven walks and 26 strikeouts.
Billingsley, who has thrown 241 pitches in his last two starts, is on five days rest tonight. This season he has made a whopping 13 starts on five days rest, and in those starts he is 6-3 with a 3.40 ERA, and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.29, compared to 1.53 in his 12 starts on four days rest.

I can proudly say I have publicly urinated in Irvine. I went to college for three years at UCI and my best friend worked in the pub (which had just opened). Honest to goodness memory of reading The Fountainhead while downing a pitcher. I should’ve been picking up girls. Dammit! (I also probably partook in beautiful Aldrich Park . . .)
I was also there the year baseball got axed. My buddy was there to play, but literally our second year it was toast (1992).

It used to piss me off when they would sell our dorm parking places for events at Bren. Parking was ridic there. First place I ever saw the hitch-to-your-car-for-your-spot move.

what I always wondered
do salaries in SoCal reflect that crazy cost of living? If a grocery store manager in SoCal move to Nashville with the same company, would their expected lifestyle be about the same?
Bingo.
If you are in many fields it makes sense to cling to big cities and pay the higher cost of living since that’s where most of the jobs are. If you’re a grocery store manager and you don’t care about living in Phoenix or Dallas, moving is the smart play.

There you go. So you could probably buy* a 3 bedroom house in Fontana for double what a room costs in Irvine.
*Mortgage only. Not factoring in taxes, insurance or down payment.
by Michael White on Sep 2, 2011 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions
I would think so
there was never any qualifier on it. And if you are comparing renting a room in an apt for 800 bucks a condo mortgage makes logical sense as the comparison.
Right. So I’m guessing you can find a one bedroom condo in a few of the non-posh beach communities (so not Newport Beach or Manhattan Beach, etc.)
And that’s if you want/need to be VERY close to the coast. His question was simply near the coast which could mean 15-20 minute drive. Therefore, a condo in Anaheim or Garden Grove would (while pushing it) answer his question.
by Michael White on Sep 2, 2011 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions
I would have to be in a really unique situation (eg. a student at UC Irvine) to decide that renting a room made more sense than moving someplace less desirable and renting an entire apartment. I know for a fact that you can find a decent 1 bedroom apartment in Chatsworth for ~$800. I don’t know OC well, but I’m sure there’s a similar comp.
by Michael White on Sep 2, 2011 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions
How wide of a geographical area are you searching?
I mean, if you MUST live in Irvine or very close by then you do what you need to do. $800 for a room seems quite expensive to me, but I don’t have much knowledge of south orange county.
by Michael White on Sep 2, 2011 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions
doesn't matter
interest rates are the same for everyone, it just depends on when you buy. If you can put more down then your mortgage will be smaller.
not the same, but close enough unless you are a dirtbag deadbeat
by Hollywood Joe on Sep 2, 2011 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions
FYI
That would get you about 160,000 worth of mortgage.
Rule of thumb
8.8 = 10%
8.1 = 9%
7.4 = 8%
6.7 = 7%
6.0 = 6%
5.3 = 5%
4.6 = 4%
Assuming 4.5% interest then $800 / multiplier of 5.0 gets 160,000
Going the other way if you want to quickly figure out a mortgage on a 5% / 400,000 note then it is 5.3 * 400 = $2,120
for quick and dirty estimates.

What’s the consensus on Sellers? Back-up infield at best? Any chance at starting 2b job next year? Too many variables I’m sure.
meh whatever, it’s just that I think Miles is the most easily replaceable of our vets. Next year I could see either Sellers or Dejesus easily replicating his numbers

Furcal Gordon/Sellers

Denker will never get another major league at bat unless major injuries throw him on a roster.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
His die has been cast, he’ll never get another chance.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
history, once someone gets labeled not much they can do to change it. Denker was labeled a minor league player, no one was even interested in him, we did him a favor since he was originally drafted by us and signed him to deal to fill at need in A Ball. He is not in any Dodger plans.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
You were saying the same thing about Sellers a few weeks ago. If I had brought up Sellers in early 2010 when he was playing at High A you would have said the same thing.
Sellers is wildly exceeding expectations with a .710 OPS in 70 PA. He is not a good example here.
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
That is an excellent rebuttal point. The Dodgers proved me wrong by having Sellers play in the spring on the major league team.
Yes, DeJon Watson has never told me that Denker is not in their plans. I simply deduce they started him off again in A ball for the second year in a row. The slow feet, bad hands has been part of his scouting report since he played in rookie ball for us. This is just my opinion that he is not in their plans.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I think you are probably right, that he is not in their plans. It’s just something that I personally would not rule out. Him being a bench third baseman that is. I imagine he might get some play in spring training.
Though I noticed him getting time at 2nd just recently, it could be just to get Corey Smith in the lineup
is he playing third?
i thought he was mostly a 1st baseman now

Phil, he’s a almost a year younger than Mitchell, and has been one of the best third baseman at high A/AA this year. He’s read for AAA, and it’s easy to see him putting up ridiculous numbers at Albuquerque. From there all he needs is a crummy MLB thirdbaseman to shove aside….like……I don know…..Juan Uribe perhaps?
He’s a terrible infielder, with slow feet, and bad hands. This is just my opinion but I don’t think putting him on any plan for 2012 is realistic.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
All I’m saying is that if Mitchell deserves a serious look for a bench spot, it doesn’t hurt to consider Denker as well who is younger and has out up for impressive minor league numbers.
Mitchell is only getting a look because we put him on the 40 man when there wasn’t anyone better to throw on there and we don’t have enough good players in the organization for it to be worth throwing him.

apparently
the Irish word for “devil” literally translates to “black man”. Irish friend of mine told me that when black people started first coming to Ireland it freaked some folk out
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
I'm willing to accept that might be true
but,
“In Irish-Scottish Gaeilge, people of African descent were historically referred to as fir gorum, or blue men. People of this race were described as “blue” rather than as “black” because obviously the Gaelic word for black man meant the devil. This may explain why a particular musical style often associated with an African American influence is called “the blues.”
you're using wikipedia
I am using an Irish person I met in Ireland who was part of a Gaelige language restoration club at Trinity College Dublin.
And that explanation for the “blues” is so much no.
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
I know the blues thing is hokum, but you can’t keep hiding behind “I met someone in Ireland” when I can’t find anything on the internet to back that up.
and then, I did
There is a simple explanation for Irish people calling black people blue men.
For centuries, in the Irish (Gaelic) language the Christian Devil was commonly called the Black Man, or an Fear Dubh. It is a very old phrase, and probably pre-Christian. The phrase is still used among native Irish speakers.
Because Ireland is an island off the coast of Northern Europe, Irish speakers of the past rarely people with “black” skins. When they first began to encounter them, the phrase “Black Man” was well established as meaning the devil. So they called them “blue men”.
Gee, look at that. My personal experience actually bears some sort of scrutiny after all.
It’s quite possible that people in Ireland that were Irish were telling me this because I was American and had no real reason to disbelieve them. But I don’t exactly trust that Wikipedia is the be-all, end-all bastian of cultural information.
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
MMA has left me unable to resolve conflicts by anything except laying on someone.
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
the blues thing makes no sense
it was a self-identification made by the people who sang, produced, and listened to the music. I very very very much so doubt VERY VERY MUCH that Black people in the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction eras had any understanding of Irish-Scottish Gaelige.
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
But I heard they were able to blue themselves when needed.

True but there has to be a reason why the BlueJays would have rather have Bautista play 3rd then let Edwin. The scouting reports says he’s awful, team actions say he’s awful, metrics say he’s awful (-52 career) so I’m inclined to think he’s awful at 3rd base.

The middle step of the DVD player is fairly important too. A whole TV season on VHS tape was like the size of an encyclopedia set
I been saying for 40 years that smaller is better

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
The fun part was when one tape would get eaten, and the collection was no longer complete.

facebook is easily replaceable
google is a multifaceted company that has software used by even more people then facebook and you wouldn’t simply be able to go to another site and sign up for an account to replace it.
softwarewise sure, but for the user, google wasn’t always THE search engine. No reason Yahoo! couldn’t reenter the fray. Or Bing.
thousands of applications are built on top of their maps
millions use their phone operating system. Just to name 2 things. Google analytics, google advertising, google everything.
How many people have a G-Mail account that isn’t backed up anywhere?
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
I bet as many people use the other things google provide
as people that use facebook. I’ll even venture to say more. I don’t think you realize how many services google offers.
I’d be bummed if Facebook went away and I had to set everything backup on Google+.
I’d be totally boned if Google went away.

If Google went away, it would be like losing a family member.
I don’t have a shirt that says Uncle Facebook.

I tweeted this but thought I'd let Mad Men people know
netflix is streaming all four seasons! Get caught before season 5 (whenever that starts!)

I have such a bad memory that all I remember
is that Don suddenly proposed to Meagan.. everything else is a blur
"I was a little scared he was into that Oakland thing. We swing here on 3-0." Grady Little on Andre
dude! i assume you either watch Mad Men, or you don't
"I was a little scared he was into that Oakland thing. We swing here on 3-0." Grady Little on Andre
Sorry, more like "remind yourself of what happened"
since its been fucking forever since it last aired
"I was a little scared he was into that Oakland thing. We swing here on 3-0." Grady Little on Andre
I mean, Im a die hard fan
and I don’t even remember what happened in season four!

I’d care more about Mad Men if it was not for the fact that all those bright and healthy people are bedwetting themselves right now.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
wait wha?
"I was a little scared he was into that Oakland thing. We swing here on 3-0." Grady Little on Andre
I'll give it a go
the hard drinking, hard smoking people depicted on Mad Men as healthy adults, now need adult diapers in their 70s and 80s
that is probably not a good thing for your mental health
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
i feel ya sista
like will do that to you!

Well, cat's out of the bag
So typical to fall in love your secretary…yeesh.

at least she's hawt

Even in real life, hot secretary marries the boss or at least has an affair. Luckily secretaries are a thing of the past.

Now it's personal assistants
but, from my experience, they’re pretty much a secretary and personal service professional, shopper, caterer, etc.
"I was a little scared he was into that Oakland thing. We swing here on 3-0." Grady Little on Andre
don’t use personal experience here, it can’t be proven by the internet
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
working in a CPA firm
every partner had a personal assistant who was basically a secretary, kept track of all their shit, ordered them lunch every day, fixed their cars, picked up their dry cleaning, cleaned their office, everything. It was kinda disgusting. But they get paid much much better these days. And, they are usually pretty bossy bitches in their own right.
"I was a little scared he was into that Oakland thing. We swing here on 3-0." Grady Little on Andre
like, even as a professional personal (a CPA)
who did not mess with the assistants. They were scary.

i mean as a professional person
"I was a little scared he was into that Oakland thing. We swing here on 3-0." Grady Little on Andre
just that partners can't be bothered to do their own personal shit.

see rich people all over the world
if I had the money I would pay someone to deal with that shit for me in a snap.
I just looked at them
and felt EVEN making good money, I would feel degraded in such a position

Seems enough to create a job description – do everything I ask that does not involve sexual favors.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
not just bothered
it doesn’t make economic sense for them to do their own personal shit
Why not remove all the chore tasks of my job so that I can focus on the core value of my job and generate so much more money for the company billing out at 275 bucks per hour

Netflix is going to change a bit.
Since they lost Starz, its going to be old movies and TV series. Don’t know who gets netflix to be their blockbuster, but there you go go.
I've heard Blockbuster online is taking off like mad
