Could See History Tonight In San Diego
The Matt Kemp Triple Crown Show moves to Petco Park this weekend as the Dodgers open a three-game series with the Padres in San Diego. But on Friday we might see history of a different kind.
Eugenio Velez is starting tonight's game, batting eighth and playing second base. Velez this season has no hits in 33 at-bats. Zero hits. Dating back to last year, Velez is hitless in his last 42 at-bats.
The record for most consecutive at-bats without a hit by a position player is 45, held jointly by Bill Bergen (in 1909 with the Brooklyn Dodgers) and Craig Counsell (earlier this season with the Milwaukee Brewers). In addition, the record for most at-bats in a season without a hit, by a position player, is 35, by Hal Finney, a catcher for the 1936 Pittsburgh Pirates.
Velez has started six previous games this season, and has reached four at-bats only once, and had three at-bats three other times. It is conceivable that Velez could tie or break the Bergen/Counsell record tonight. Or, he could get a hit. Either way, we see history.

There are only two active players who were alive when a hitter last hit for the triple crown according to Jayson Stark.
It’s been so long now since anyone won a Triple Crown in this sport that we’re down to only two only active players who were even alive the last time somebody (i.e., Carl Yastrzemski) won it. They would be Omar Vizquel and Tim Wakefield, of course. (You were expecting maybe Starlin Castro?)
.
You history majors will know that Yaz won in 1967. But wait. This gets even more stupendous. That’s because Matt Kemp was making his ferocious Triple Crown run in the National League the last time we checked. And nobody has won a Triple Crown in the NL since … (cue the percussion section) … Joe Medwick, in … (bass drums only, please) … 1937.
Looks like only Kelly was around the last time a NL player did it.
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
This is the sort of witty word play that leads to nicknames like “Ducky.”

Velez is on a hot streak
He reached base via a walk in his last AB
and
scored a run.
Let’s go Velez, we are on the band wagon tonight!
Question, does it count as winning the triple crown if you finish tied for first in any of the offensive categories?
Cool
Ole Ducky is about to get all famous again.

For instance
In 1967, the last triple crown was achieved by Yaz, who tied Harmon Killebrew with 44 home runs.

Just caught up on the dead thread.
MLB threatening to suspend the Dodgers? That is big balls, indeed.
My question is… is Bud Selig overplaying a hand here? I mean, if the bankruptcy court has the power to rip up the Fox deal and allow the Dodgers to seek a new TV contract, couldn’t they also tell MLB to STFU?
magnae clunes mihi placent, nec possum de hac re mentiri.
quis enim, consortes mei, non fateatur
I’d think so, but MLB is saying no matter what MLB does once Frank leaves the confines of Chap 11. he’s going to take away the team. This seems headed for another court case as Frank sues MLB for taking away his team, Fox sues MLB because they lost the contract, the main vendor sues the Dodgers for reneging on promised attendance, the Dodgers sue the vendor for not having any product to sell, and on and on and on
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
In other words, we are still very much in “this is gonna get worse before it gets better” territory.
Frank’s got trouble, and he doesn’t know the territory.

Since I was way, way off on many predictions
I will post this one since I was really close :)
In the player profile before the season about Rod Barajas, I guessed this:
I think Barajas makes 86 starts at catcher, and hits .239/.281/.423 with 16 home runs in 327 PA
With six games left (Barajas is not starting tonight), Barajas is at .231/.288/.427 with 15 home runs in 325 PA, and 82 starts at catcher.
Blind squirrel, nut, etc.
I'd be very interested to see the Kemp predictions and if anyone came close
I remember saying something like .275/.335/515. Yeah, pretty close, lmao.
Silverwidow had the highest slugging guess (.263/.337/.565) and picked 38 home runs.
Hollywood Joe said .280/.350/.550.
Lots of 30/30 guesses. Dodgerblue8188 was short and to the point:
.294 34 HR 40 steals. Top 5 in MVP voting
Much better than my prediction that Javy Guerra would get removed from the 40-man roster to make room for some opening day moves.
