Speaking of the Lions...WHOA

From Chuck Garfien:

Since 1980, the Detroit Lions have had only TWO kickers. Eddie Murray and Jason Hanson.

Sort of

Outside of the strike years of 1982 and 1987, the Lions also had Rich Karlis (1990) and Dave Rayner (2010) when their guys got hurt.

Last year Pujols and Votto had extremely similar seasons

The difference between them, really, was that Votto was on a playoff team and Pujols wasn’t. Pujols got I believe 1 first place vote, the rest went to Votto. Kemp is slightly better overall (though Kemp is a CF, Braun is a LF instead of 2 1B), but I’m afraid it will be the same story, playoff team against non-playoff team.

by Ivdown on Sep 25, 2011 3:12 PM PDT reply actions

you’re probably right. he probably deserved it when howard won it. but i dont think it’s a travesty to give someone the mvp when they hit 58 HR with a BA .300+

by court168627 on Sep 25, 2011 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

If you care at all about Advanced statistics

in 2006 Pujols had a .331/.431/.671 line with an 8.5 WAR, Howard had .313/.425/.659 line with 6.2 WAR.

Pujols had 9 less home runs and slugged more than .010 points better.

by Ivdown on Sep 25, 2011 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

i do

and their OPS were nearly identical. the huge discrepancy in teh WAR comes from defense, which the current defensive metrics are not very good. obviously pujols is a much better fielder, but im not trying to say that he didnt deserve the mvp. on the contrary. im just saying that the voters werent looking for a reason not to vote for him.

by court168627 on Sep 25, 2011 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Pujols has better by .018 points in BA, .006 points in OBP, and .012 points in slugging

.448 wOBA to .436 wOBA. It’s not a giant margin, but then taking fielding into it, clearly Pujols was the better choice. Last season it was a similar situation with Pujols and Votto, and as opposed to 06 where Howard got the award on a non playoff team, pujols didn’t get the same treatment with basically the same argument. The only real difference is Pujols league leading home runs were lower as were Votto’s still high amount.

by Ivdown on Sep 25, 2011 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

As evidenced by finishing behind Howard in 2006

and not getting more than 1 first place vote last year when the seasons were incredibly close.

I don’t think you realize just how historic Albert Pujols is.

by Ivdown on Sep 25, 2011 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

That's likely a factor

I don’t know how I feel about that. It’s nice to give the award to a new player, but if a player is elite enough to win the award, that shouldn’t really factor into the thought process.
