What Will It Take For Matt Kemp To Win The Batting Title?

Matt Kemp has his work cut out for him, but the National League batting title and triple crown is still within his reach.

Matt Kemp still has a shot at the National League triple crown, but it will take a great closing series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, plus a little help from both Ryan Braun and Jose Reyes for Kemp to win the batting title.

Kemp in his career has hit .304/.335/.500 with seven home runs in 39 career games at Chase Field, where the Dodgers play their final three games of the season. This season, Kemp has hit .292 (seven hits in 24 at-bats) with two home runs in Phoenix. Kemp will face Daniel Hudson, Jarrod Parker (making his major league debut), and Joe Saunders.

Braun and the Brewers end their regular season at home with three games against the Pirates, facing starting pitchers Charlie Morton, Ross Ohlendorf, and the undefeated TBA.

Reyes and the Mets end at home against the Reds, facing Homer Bailey, Bronson Arroyo, and Edinson Volquez.

Heading into Monday, here is the National League batting average leaderboard:

Player AB Hits AVG
Ryan Braun 556 185 .3327
Jose Reyes 526 174 .3308
Matt Kemp 589 191 .3243

Here is a look at all the possible batting average outcomes for each of the three players, ranging from one to 15 at-bats over the final three games:

Time to root for Kemp to finish seven for 12 (.3295), beating out a one-for-nine Braun (.3292) and a three-for-12 Reyes (.3290), while also hitting at least as many home runs over the next three (or four) days as Albert Pujols.

Do you think that Braun will rest before playoffs?

If so then that will mean that Braun will likely hold on to batting title

Depends when they or the D-Backs clinch the number two seed.

Is there a reason to rest a hitter?

Looking at Kemp's swing

Do you think he is more interested in winning the triple crown, or going 40 – 40. I’m sure some would say “both, of course” but the way he is attacking the ball at the plate, I think he really wants to go yard on the ball, and that could hurt his average.

by Hollywood Joe on Sep 26, 2011 7:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not expecting a slap hit

I am thinking of his swing on some of those strike outs, and they were definitely “big hit” swings.

Stupid Petco, he probably would have had at least 2 more hits, with one of those being a home run, in a smaller park.

Man, why couldn’t we end the season playing the Pirates in Tittsburgh.

WHAMMY!

Dude has 150+ strikeouts. He swings big and misses a lot.

by Nolij on Sep 26, 2011 8:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Almost every contact at the moment is a grand fly ball – which in Petco stayed in and was caught, and also led to a lot of swings and misses. It’s true he always has a lot of those, but at the moment there aren’t any of those sharp, hard-hit line drive singles he usually gets and which help his batting average. He’s hitting more like a typical power hitter rather than the five-tool player he usually is. He’s aiming for a home run every time he swings. He may well get them in Chase, but he’s foregoing the singles and BA to do so.

by berkowit28 on Sep 26, 2011 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I saw some hard line drives that went just foul – do those count?

by Hollywood Joe on Sep 26, 2011 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Really??? Coming off his torried .600 over a seven game span you have now decided based on your expertise in the batting box that Matt Kemp is now only swinging for home runs during the last three games because he was unable to keep hitting .600?

I recall 1-2 line drive singles in the past 4 days.

And in the last 7 games he’s had 4 doubles. Plus the 3 HRs and 4 singles.

Not sure what you’re saying really.

but he hits well in AZ. Hopefully he’s not pressing about this but I bet it ends up rather close. Thanks for doing this!

I think you hit a sore spot with Phil. Personally, I see no harm in a constructive complaint about an ad or feature on a “free” site. I have sent suggestions to many free sites that I use (including SBN) and they are always very receptive to hear what their customers feedback is, even when I am not giving them any greenbacks. It is not like you were complaining about Eric’s articles and the way he runs the site. If you were doing that then I could see the dogs biting at your heels. But this wasn’t the case.

by Xeifrank on Sep 26, 2011 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

You don’t know me, do not make excuses for me. I find anyone who whines on a free site about the advertising to be irritating. Especially when it involves a little more then a few seconds to mentally move on from the ad they find offending. Baesball Ref has had ad’s I find troublesome, I pay for their service, I let them know.

These are my thoughts, mine alone and do not reflect managements opinions. If I’ve offended anyone with this opinion, tell my boss how offended you are. You know, the guy who does all this free work because if SbNation ever tried to make real money so they could pay their bloggers you’d all flee as fast as you ever showed up in the first place.

That’s a little sorry, actually. The real Budweiser comes from Budvar in (what was in the 1930s) Czechoslovakia, which the Nazis annexed/overran in 1938. Sure, the beer was probably first brewed by the Germans living in that town (also previously known by the German name of Budweis, hence the name), but it is now/then a Czech national brew.

When you think about, it's sort of ridiculous

By showing how close Matt Kemp was/is to winning the triple crown, it feels like the default position is that he “must” win the TC to win the MVP, and that if he comes up short, than he therefore loses any shot at the MVP.

Why? Doesn’t this seem like a double standard? Braun doesn’t have to end his run with a 40-40 season, there is no arbitrary number he has to finish with, although I suppose if he loses the Batting Title to Reyes that won’t help. But it feels like because Braun is on the Brewers, it is his MVP to lose.

Simply not true. I think by now voters have made up their minds, and the Triple Crown is just something to help validate their current viewpoints. Keith Law tweeted yesterday that he thought Kemp was MVP with or without the triple crown.

For many years Baseball Propsectus was my go to site. Strangely enough when they went to the pay model they stopped being good enough for me to continue. Not because the same writers became less effective but because they seemed to lose all the writers I found interesting.

Most of my analysis that I enjoy reading comes from Baseball HQ which is a pay site for roto players. Also the columns on Rotowire are always good reads.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Sep 26, 2011 9:02 AM PDT reply actions

agreed. it’d take something otherworldly for them to simply repeat these seasons, let alone top them. Kershaw is probably more likely to repeat than Kemp, but man has it been a fun ride watching them.

by G.Scott on Sep 26, 2011 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure

I agree both have had unbelievable seasons, but Kershaw has improved every single year since his start. The dude looks all time. He may not be able to put up all the exact same numbers (although I still think that is possible) but I expect he will give us a couple of No-No’s and at least have a shot at the vaulted Perfect Game, one of these seasons. Especially because he plays in the NL West, which will give him plenty of opportunities to see the red hot offensive power of the Padres and the Giants.

it wasn’t that long ago that the Giants were an offensive force and the Padres were winning division titles. It’s really hard to base future matchups on teams that don’t exist yet. This was an all-time season, so him repeating would certainly be a feat

I had a dream about you last night, Joe. Don’t worry, it wasn’t that kind of dream.

I dreamt you were in Sudan. The big story in Sudan is that an incarcerated felon had died — he had been convicted of murdering many people. Tried and convicted. Anyway, he’s in jail, and he’s died, and everybody in Sudan is talking about it. You say, “You know, I always thought that in one of my past lives, I was a murderer.” This leads to a heated discussion that ends with your arrest for the murders committed by the incarcerated, and now dead, prisoner — i.e., you are his reincarnated being, and now you must serve out the remainder of his sentence. Your protestations that this is madness fall of deaf ears.

I have no idea what this dream means.

yikes, but in my mid-20’s I was really into Stoli for the same reason. This was before vodka and redbull started dating and the world started to melt…I loved Stoli shaken with ice, maybe now and then I’d pour vermouth in the glass and then dump it out, just leaving the coating.

but, Grey Goose is not the destination, just a stop on the train. There is a wonderful world of tasty beverages for your palate to develop into – wines are a universe and even middling 12 dollar a bottle reds are far more tasty and delicious than grey goose can ever aspire to be

leaving wines, liqueurs are incredibly rich and varied, bitter and sweet. so good

Gin, wonderfully challenging, juniper berry goodness. Gin drinks are better with Gin than they are with Vodka. tastelessness is not a virtue, leave that quality for the teeny boppers in papa’s stash

and finally, Scotch, the water of life. I prefer it, like the Scottish, with either an ice cube or two, or just a few drops of water…opens it up

my advice – push the palate, drink slowly, savor, and you will develop appreciation of the not so obvious, secondary and subtle beauties are for more lasting than the obvious ones, works in drinks, in women, in life

and yes, I still really love Vodka, and will drink it happily on occasion

This coveted honor is awarded annually to the best overall offensive performer in both the American League and National League. Originally introduced in 1999 to honor the 25th anniversary of Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record, the Hank Aaron Award was the first major award to be introduced in 30 years.

I continue to argue that as 4th starters go, Lilly has been far better than he seems to get credit for

I have no great need to dump him and end up with yet another hole in the rotation next year (esp with no guarantee they can re-sign Kuroda).

That said… if BoSox were so desperate they’d trade quite a bit for him, I wouldn’t turn that down.

But sounds like they more want someone who can fill in now just temporarily and not cost a ton in return.

Speaking of late non-postseason-eligible trades

The D-Backs traded for a reliever for this past weekend, and it spawned a cool look back from Tyler Kepner in the NY Times:

So it was in 1987, when the Detroit Tigers waged a fierce battle with the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League East title. The Tigers trailed by a half-game on Sept. 22 when they acquired reliever Dickie Noles from the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later.

"Sparky Anderson had said once that the only reason Dickie Noles was in the big leagues is because he throws at people," said Noles, now the employee-assistance professional for the Phillies, referring to the Tigers’ manager. "Then I go there on Sept. 22, we’re playing the Red Sox at Fenway Park, and he brings me in in the ninth inning to get the save."

Noles collected one more save in four games, helping the Tigers win the division. A month later, he was shipped back to Cubs General Manager Dallas Green – as the player to be named later in the deal. Essentially, then, Noles was traded for himself.

I love stuff like this.

by Phil Gurnee on Sep 26, 2011 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

That makes two awesomely memorable trades for the 1987 Tigers

One was getting Dickie Noles for himself. The other was the greatest short-term vs. long-term deadline deal I can think of.

Tigers got Doyle Alexander from the Braves, and he proceeded to go 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA in 11 starts (Detroit won all 11 of those starts), including winning the opening game of the season-ending three-game sweep of the Blue Jays, a weekend series in Detroit which began with Toronto up by one game in the AL East with three to play.

The Braves got some Michigan kid named John Smoltz.

Of course, the playoffs didn’t work out so well for Alexander, as he got shelled in two starts (10.00 ERA) in a 4-1 ALCS loss to the Twins, but they wouldn’t have made the playoffs without Alexander.

Seemed better overall than he had been in awhile, but yeah, it was the Padres. Not sure why he just has not had the stamina this season. That’s gotta be fixed.

I think the biggest concern with Bills

Was that, despite pitching to a very crappy line up, he was on the axis of grooving fastballs or missing the corner trying to be too fine…especially being too fine to the 8 hitter OPSing .540.

I agree. Both odds would be high enough that I couldn’t give you a number I’d be confident with. If forced to take a swag. :) I’d go with something like…

Odds to win batting title: 200:1
Odds to hit 40 or more HRs: 20:1

Matt Kemp

Hit three home runs in two different series this year, both on the road.

He hit three in a three game series @CIncinnati and in a four game series @Colorado.

12-14, 8 home runs.

Count on it.

by fbihop on Sep 26, 2011 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions

The most hits he had in a three game span

Was 8. In the recently completed San Francisco series at home. He did 7 a couple times.

But yes, I like the 12-14, 8 HR. Book it.

by slaps825 on Sep 26, 2011 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions

If you look at his game logs he has hit three HRs over a three game span three times. And that is using overlapping spans of games to get an extra time out of Cincy (0-2-1 and 2-1-0) along with his 9/21-9/22-9/23 HR games. He’s played 158 games, which gives us a sample size of 156. 3 out of 156 is 52:1 odds or a 1.92% chance. So that is what the empirical data tells us. From there adjust for park, pitchers and motivation.

As far as we can tell this it the first adjustment of the Dodgers primary logo since their move to Los Angeles from Brooklyn in 1958, that leading tail on the ‘o’ had been around in one-form-or-another since the 1930s.

That is some continuity. It’s cleaner now. Don’t think this affects the uniform script though, so HJ’s uniforms aren’t obsolete

Yah

I am talking in a hypothetical world where they weren’t trading Haren in aims of rebuilding. Kennedy-Haren-Hudson in a 5 game series isn’t quite the Phillies, but it is pretty damn good.

I went to the American Cinematheque’s screening with a Q&A with the director several years ago. He said it was like trying to direct two men who were trying to sing arias to each other.

He also discussed his failed attempt to bring my favorite book, Robertson Davies’s Fifth Business, to the screen.

The guy also directed the TV movie The Day After, which aired when I was, I think, 10 years old, and SCARED THE FUCKING BEJEEZUS OUT OF ME.

The man’s name is Nicholas Meyer. He also wrote and directed The Seven Per Cent Solution, which I have not seen but I hear is a pretty great Sherlock Holmes movie.

There’s a strange little movie named “Last Night” (1998) that follows a few people in the hours before the world ends. Prior to that, I always liked “Miracle Mile” from my youth.

Night on Earth — I took a girl to see that movie. After the movie, she said, “Thanks, I’ve never seen a movie like that ever before.” She never spoke to me again.

That movie was a milestone on my Roberto Benigni kick, which did not end until Life is Beautiful. I was a complete and total hipster about Roberto Benigni. “There’s this Italian dude who might be the funniest man in the world,” I said. I even went to see Son of the Pink Panther in theaters, because he starred in it, and it was terrible. Then Life is Beautiful came out, and everybody joined the cult of Roberto Benigni, and I was like, OK, I’m done. I’m not proud.

by Hollywood Joe on Sep 26, 2011 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Bride has always indulged my movie habit — which, I’ll admit, has become significantly more mainstream over the years. (I don’t see anything anymore — y’know, kids — but even when I did, I still had a bit of an indie kick. I thought the movie “Me and You and Everyone We Know” was the best movie of its year.)

The moment Bride had to choose what kind of movie fan we were going to be was when we saw Scent of a Woman. We walked out of that movie and she said, “I know you hated it, but if I saw that movie by myself, I’d probably have liked it.”

I wholly disliked it. I disliked it passionately, violently, fervently; I disliked it with all my vigor.

I should note that I could have out-mintxcore’d mintxcore when it came to movies back then. I would go see plotless Vietnamese art pieces and come back raving. All I can say is, I hope I’ve chilled.

That said, I still don’t think I’d like that movie. I haven’t seen it since it came out 20 years ago.

I have only seen bits of it on cable, but from what I gather it is

overacted
manipulative
trite
commercial
contrived
boorish
ego vehicle for Pacino
and generally yech…

these are a few of the thoughts that come to mind. I can deal with mainstream movies like that as long as they are entertaining and don’t take themselves seriously…but I think I was already too old and too cynical for something that was trying to be meaningful

Wine thoughts

I am not sure if I am going to do another wine post anytime soon, but I thought I would at least let you know what I just ordered from K&L Wines

2009 Fujanera Rosata (Puglia, Italy) – $4.99 a bottle regulary around 12 bucks. I like Rosato for hot days and BBQ, spicy foods, grilled fish….picked up 3 bottles in case we get a hot weekend in October. I haven’t had this wine, but I love the Fujanera Nero di Troia (about 14 bucks a bottle and a steal!!!) and so thought for 5 bucks a bottle, what could it hurt!

Valle dell’acate, Case ididni, Nero d’Avola (Sicily) – like 12.99 a bottle. I really like Nero d’Avola, never tried this one – seems like a good deal and got decent reviews. Nero d’avola is very syrah like, medium body, structure, spicy. A good wine to eat with.

2008 Antonelli Contrario Sagrantino (Umbria) – this wine on sale for $19.99 a bottle, regulary like $65 bucks. I had this wine this summer when on vacation in Umbria. Big red, perfect for a cold night and hearty foods. Not an easy wine to drink if you don’t like heavy red wines. If you are a big red drinker…try it out

2006 Odoardi Savuto (Calabria) – very interesting wine, about 13 bucks a bottle. This is a personal favorite of mine, is one of my week night, don’t care if I finish the whole bottle fall backs. Medium body, funky nose, good tannin, slightly acid. great Pizza wine (even though the Italians really don’t drink wine with Pizza (story for another day)). I love this wine.

2008 Biceglia Aglianico (Campania) – Aglianico is the big red of Campania and one of my favorites. Eat with with a hearty Sunday Ragu, roasted meats, game meats and enjoy – this is a steal at around 14 bucks a bottle

for about an hour and a half with them talking to credit verification, billing, collections, billing, credit verification, and billing again. There’s a couple of past due balances, all the lady wants to know is what the past due amounts are for, and they can’t find that info, and keep transferring her to different departments. Gotta love how Verizon (and all the big similar companies) are good with this type of thing. Ugh.

I am not sure if this has been addressed, how does the missed game against the nationals play into this? If Kemp was, for example, one home run shy of the Pujols, presumably that one missed game will be an issue.
