Ethier in 2012
(I didn't see any posts particularly discussing this. I apologize if there have been discussions about this elsewhere. )
So I read on MLBTradeRumors:
"Those close to Andre Ethier believe there's no chance he'd re-sign with the Dodgersafter the 2012 season. If true, Olney says it would make sense for the team to try to trade him offseason. You can make a case they'd be selling low though, Either had a down season by his standards (.292/.368/.421 with 11 homers) and finished the year on the disabled list due to knee surgery."
I'm guessing this mainly due to the disagreement over his injury. Is there more I can read about this? Also, what do the Dodgers do now in light of this? While he isn't as integral to the offense like M.Kemp, he still has had solid production at times and would be nearly impossible to replace given the flux over ownership and an already question marked LF.
Any thoughts or additional analysis about this would be great.

It may sound strange.
But I’d be just fine with trading Eithier away for say… Yonder Alonso or some other very high end 1B prospect and then letting Rivera and Sands run LF/RF.

Rumormonger: “If the Diamondbacks offer Ethier a 400 googol dollar contract after 2012, do you think he resigns with the Dodgers?”
(Insert random Dodger or clubhouse guy): “No way.”

I put no credence in these types of rumors.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
John Ely is close to Andre Ethier, in that their names come consecutively in an alphabetical listing of the roster.

Ely: “Who is Ethier?”
Rumormonger: “I’ll take that to mean, ‘No way.’”

story reported by Buster
The story on MLB Trade Rumors came via Buster Olney, don’t have access to the stuff behind the wall so couldn’t read the story.
Although injured this year Ethier still hit 30 doubles and has been averaging over 20 HR’s for the past four years until this year. He is not Matt Kemp, but keeping him for a few years with Kemp as Sands develops gives the lineup some serious thump and OBP…People criticized Ethier for his comments at the beginning of the year regarding his status going forward, but in many ways he was right-will know more after October 12, but if we lose Ethier he will not be replaced as easy as many think.
Lets be real here
Ethier is a good player defensively we can consider him average. He probably might be above average in LF. Lets be realistic her he has had one season where eclipsed 25 hr and you can blame it on injury and youth but his strikeout rate has continued to grow. His numbers against Lefties along with power numbers since 2008 have made me question if he could ever become at least a star forget a superstar. I hope he does get traded because like Martin I dont believe he is worth the money he wants. And at this point I feel he would get better value through prospects than it would if he were to sign a big contract
lets be real here
If the Dodgers felt the same way about Ethier, why would Trayvon Robinson be dealt at the deadline? He was consensus top 5 prospect in our organization, had 5 tools, and could play the OF. With Andre, there was a potential position crunch(if Sands was in the OF/Loney was at 1B, and Andre in the OF). If they felt Andre was going to be gone and it was a definite, then Robinson would still be in Dodger Blue, right?

I don't believe the hype.
Ethier wants to be what he terms a “legacy player”, spending his whole career with the Dodgers. I don’t believe this is anything other than posturing by his agent to get a multi-year deal. Additional food for thought is that I’ve heard Ethier would like to get his 10 and be done.
Trade him
With Andre’s attitude, and James Loney’s sudden resurgence, I think it’s finally time to say goodbye to Mr. Clutch. Looking at this past year Dre’s and Loney’s number’s have been fairly even, but James will be looking for somewhere like 6.5-7M while Dre will be paid nearly double that with 13-15M through arbitration with no garuntee that he will be back in 2009 form. Also with Dre’s recent decline in power, his legs will be suspect coming back from surgery, and his clubhouse demeanour leaves much to be desired. Loney on the other had has two good knee, is two years younger, and has shown a good and humble work ethic needed for the dodgers to turn things around in the next year. At this point I say you trade Either for a third or second baseman (either a near MLB prospect, or rookie, Brent Morel looks interesting, and the Sox would certainly be looking for a good contact hitting outfielder), move Loney to the outfield, and used the money saved to go after a big name firstbaseman. If things don’t workout, you can trade loney, and the dodger’s have a good amount of prospect talent to plug up left field between Scott van Slyke Afredo Silvero, and Angelo Songco
There’s also no guarantee that Loney’s “sudden resurgence” sticks into next season either. One might also draw the conclusion that Ethier on one good knee is equal to Loney on two good knees.
While Ethier does pull off the occasional dick move with the press/public, I don’t think I’ve heard whispers about him being bad with his teammates, Jeff Kent and Luis Gonzalez aside.

While I agree there is no guarantee of his performance next year, at least he has had some promising stats to end the season. By the end of this season, Loney is pulling 29% of his at bats (not just hits), which is up from 22% from the last two years. Also his Slg for the first time since 08 is above .400, when he was pulling 23% of his hits. His best power from a percentage standpoint was in 07 when he had a 538 slg when he pulled 26% of his at bats. Also this speaks to a change in Loney’s work ethic as at the beginning of the season he was trying to defend his hitting to opposite field (telling Mattingly that he can take $1 out for every hit he has to left), and lately he has agreed that he is hitting better when pulling the ball. I think the stats speak to Loney having a big season next year if he can continue to pull.
Trade Ethier.
But not this offseason. Wait till the deadline.
But then what if we’re legit and we’re making a push for the playoffs?
You can’t trade him, but you don’t necessarily want to extend him. You may then end up going to arb and getting the two picks, which I think would be a better return than we’d get through a trade (though they’d be further from MLB).
