Dodgers Saturday Links: Juan Rivera Returning (?), Russ Mitchell Catching
As the Dodgers have won five straight games and 10 out of 11, here are some links for a Saturday to tide you over until the next Dodger win...
- Among the notes by Dylan Hernandez in the LA Times was that Don Mattingly is comfortable heading into next season with Javy Guerra and Kenley Jansen as his potential closers.
- Hernandez also notes that, not surprisingly, Juan Rivera would like to return to the Dodgers. "I would like to be back with this team. I hope after the season, or even before, that we can agree on an extension or something," said Rivera.
- Russ Mitchell will catch in bullpen sessions in September and continue to work on catching in the Arizona Fall League, looking to add to his tool belt, wrote Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. "I thought it was a joke at first. But after I saw [manager Don Mattingly's] comments, I told him my chips are all in. Whatever they want me to do," Mitchell said.
- The Dodgers will host the Little League World Series champs from Huntington Beach at Dodger Stadium on September 22. Roberto Baly has the details at Vin Scully is my Homeboy.
- Former Dodgers president Dennis Mannion was named CEO of Palace Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the Detroit Pistons, per The Detroit News.
- Charles Odum of the Associated Press notes in Friday's game recap that the Braves are starting rookie pitchers in all three games this weekend, the first time they have started rookies in all three games of a series since 2008.

Which is why LA needs a football team.

that was the least controversial thing I’ve said all day! Just point out there are many many football teams in LA to follow. You can even watch HS football online now!

His ERA is right in the middle of his FIP and xFIP,
thats not how it works. Fips tells you what happened, which is high for lilly because of the homers. X-fip tells you what will probably happen in the future. You can’t just average them. Lilly either has broken x-fip and siera or he has been unlucky this year. Maybe its somewhere in between, but his x-fip and siera are essentially the same as they have been for the previous 3 years, so I lean towards him being somewhat unlucky, though I don’t expect amazing things from him going forward.
I didn’t average them, just meant that they’re all pretty similar numbers, so he’s been as bad as it feels, and it’s not likely to get any better.
@RB_GScott
his era has actually gone down his last few starts i believe
while I think his x-fip has gone up because he has suddenly started walking guys. As of a month or so ago I think his era was over 4.5 and his x-fip was under 4(just barely). I wonder how much his neck is bothering him(and yes, his health was obviously a concern because of his age).
Yep
1 year contract, I’d be stoked. He deserves it. Just what the bench will need going into next season, someone who can add pop and start at times, even platoon.
3 year contract, I will cry, however.

will the Detroit Lions finally take advantage of the talent they’ve accrued having early draft picks?

they will be better than they have been in years (the Matt Millen years hang over is passing)

Green Bay, New Orleans and San Diego should be tough but Chicago isn’t particularly good and Denver will likely be horrible this year. Dallas, as always, is an enigma.
They also get to play Minnesota twice.
I'll let it pass, fbihop doesn't follow NFL pre-season as obsessively as I do ;-)

Chicago was in NFC championship game, Denver in Denver is tough
Dallas will be better
by Hollywood Joe on Sep 3, 2011 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions
If the Lions are good they should beat all those teams
Chicago was unusually lucky last year. Won a lot of close games at the end, no one on defense got hurt and the new kickoff line takes away one of the Bears’ biggest advantages, kick off returns.
Denver has no pass rush and no quarterback. A good team should beat them, even in Denver.
I just don’t trust the coaching of Dallas (well, I’m glad they have crappy coaching since I hate the Cowboys) and Romo seems to throw a lot of bad passes and sometimes he gets away with it, sometimes he doesn’t. Seems like Brett Favre 2.0 (without the whole dong shot thing).
Also:

I don’t think that 12 – 4 you’re calling is gonna happen, but ok, you win
too bad they still have to play the gamez
at best, wild card, but I stick by my guns that they will likely miss the playoffs
by Hollywood Joe on Sep 3, 2011 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Lions are def on the rise
I root for the Bears but they were lucky last year, and I’m miffed that they didn’t address the O-line more in the free agent frenzy. Mad Scientist Martz now has his offense, including Roy Williams as the big play guy!! (LOL)
Who knows, it may work out, but I’m not optimistic. D should be good again, but Urlacher is a year older.
Stafford was never hurt until the last two years…if he can stay healthy they win 9-10 games.
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
bad question :-p
the question should be: “Did the lions finally accrue talent with all those early draft picks instead of wasting them on shitty players” and the answer looks like yes.
they always told me in school that there are no bad questions

he doesn't win it alone
but one player, especially at college level, can do most of the work. A guy like Cam Newton or Tim Tebow is practically unstopable at that level.
he is really good
I am going to have to go out of my way to watch him more – maybe see him next year when he pitches local

Loney and arbitration
Given how arbitration numbers work and few times is there a significant reduction in salary, would that figure that Loney would end up being awarded about 6million in salary next year?
I think what Guerra shows
Is that trading for relief help is always a really really stupid idea. We can literally plug in people who weren’t high draft picks or hot prospects and they can do pretty good. To think we could have James McDonald doing pretty much the same thing as Ted Lilly for 1/10th the price makes me a little sick.

I can sit here with complete confidence and say Aaron Miller and Ethan Martin, and generally anyone else in our system who throws 94+ can be an effective MLB reliever for at least a year, and the only reason not to do that is because you hope for higher ceilings from them and you don’t want to start their arb clocks sooner than necessary if someone else can do the job.

For the pen sure throw all the live arms you can find in there and pray but when you start talking about how James McDonald could have been an effective starter for us when he owns one of the worst x-FIPs in the NL is where I have an issue.

I wasn’t necessarily saying he was a great starter. I am comparing him to Ted Lilly and the fact that we are paying him north of $25MM for the next two years. His and McDonald’s numbers are not that different.

For the record
I’m ecstatic that Utah St looks like it could beat Auburn. I love the order getting shaken up. However, Auburn can still go to a respectable bowl is they get their house back in order, based on record alone, needing no help from writers and voting coaches.
