Checking In With Clayton Kershaw & The Triple Crown

The Dodgers head into Sunday's series finale in Atlanta in what I would call a power position. The Dodgers have won six straight and 11 of their last 12 games, and start Clayton Kershaw on the mound going for a sweep of the Braves.

Yesterday we looked at Matt Kemp's triple crown chances. Today, we turn to Kershaw. Here are Kershaw's placement the National League pitching triple crown categories. These are through Saturday's games:

ERA Wins Strikeouts
Johnny Cueto 2.29 Ian Kennedy 18-4 Clayton Kershaw 212
Clayton Kershaw 2.45 Clayton Kershaw 17-5 Tim Lincecum 200
Roy Halladay 2.47 Roy Halladay 16-5 Cliff Lee 198
Cliff Lee 2.59 Cliff Lee 15-7 Roy Halladay 191
Cole Hamels 2.63 Yovani Gallardo 15-9 Cole Hamels 169

Halladay starts today for the Phillies in their series finale in Florida. Ryan Vogelsong, at sixth place just behind Hamels with a 2.633 ERA (Hamels is at 2.627), starts in San Francisco today against the Diamondbacks.

Lineups

Before Sunday's finale in Atlanta, the Dodgers recalled relief pitcher Ramon Troncoso from Triple A Albuquerque. It is Troncoso's third stint with the Dodgers this season. The Dodgers now have 29 players on the active roster, including 16 pitchers.

Atlanta goes righty heavy against Kershaw today, as Brian McCann, Freddie Freeman, Jason Heyward, and (switch-hitter) Chipper Jones all sit.

Dodgers Braves
SS Gordon CF Bourn
1B Loney 1B Prado
CF Kemp RF Diaz
LF Rivera
2B Uggla
RF Ethier C Ross
3B Miles SS Gonzalez
C Barajas 3B Wilson
2B Sellers
LF Constanza
P Kershaw P Delgado

I thought today was the second of five straight games on KCAL, as that’s what Saturday’s game notes showed, but in fact Monday morning’s game, attended by TBLA Maryland correspondent Greg Stephen, will be on Prime Ticket.

i was about to post my semi-regular rant against MLB blackout rules

but thrown one bone in five I will tone it down to just:

MLB blackout rules are fucking redic.

"Pitching is the art of instilling fear."

Phil’s guesses in the contest today are incomplete. Needs O or U on some.

by 68elcamino427 on Sep 4, 2011 9:12 AM PDT reply actions

Yep

Phil needs to fix his picks otherwise I can’t take em (A-E). Thanks for pointing it out.

by Xeifrank on Sep 4, 2011 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Sellers and Gordon together in the lineup.
I like it!

From mlb dot com
The Dodgers are 15-5 when Rivera starts in left field and 10-0 when he hits cleanup.

by jrock247 on Sep 4, 2011 9:15 AM PDT reply actions

Glad he’s batting cleanup again today.

Good question. Is Blake still with the team? I notice he hasn’t been put on the DL yet (I guess no need to do so at this time).

by latenite on Sep 4, 2011 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I thought so. But, in last night’s Gameday, it still showed Blake on the bench….

by latenite on Sep 4, 2011 9:23 AM PDT up reply actions

they might not have bothered

since rosters expanded around the same time he was declared done

by nolander on Sep 4, 2011 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Right

They likely won’t put him on the DL unless they need roster space. But he’s definitely done.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 4, 2011 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

I would expect that when Mitchel plays sellers or gordon gets the day off

with miles or carrol always in the lineup(to start the game at least)

by nolander on Sep 4, 2011 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

If my math is right...

Kershaw needs to throw 18 consecutive innings of shutout ball to get his ERA below Cueto’s.

It’s amazing how close to perfect those guys are.

by Just Jake on Sep 4, 2011 9:21 AM PDT reply actions

Unless Cueto's ERA goes up.

If Kershaw can go every remaining start to at least 7ip

and give up at most 2 ER (which, by looking at opponents other than Atlanta, I think is highly possible) then I think he’ll end up having an ERA better than Cueto and Halladay et al. One slip-up though and I think he won’t make it,

by Talka1ot on Sep 4, 2011 9:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I

Remember thinking how Bochy was wasting Lincecum in 2008 by having him pitch all those extra innings to win a CYA.

by bhsportsguy on Sep 4, 2011 9:32 AM PDT reply actions

Would you rather have a bat or a SP?

Since money looks tight for next year would you rather resign Kuroda and have a good rotation or sign a bat and have a mediocre 5th starter.

by dodgers4life on Sep 4, 2011 9:45 AM PDT reply actions

the rotation next year

is kershaw billz lilly. Even if we sign kuroda we still need a 5th or 4th starter(depending on how you view lilly).

by nolander on Sep 4, 2011 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Given the money owed Lilly, isn’t he in the rotation unless injured or “Barry Zito bad”?

by latenite on Sep 4, 2011 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Unless he has a horrible spring I think Eo has the 5th spot locked down.

by VegasBlues on Sep 4, 2011 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think so

eveland could easily be the guy, with Eo being the 6th starter waiting in the wings. We’ll have to see what eveland does the rest of the year.

by nolander on Sep 4, 2011 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s possible but even if Eveland does win the spot wouldn’t that mean that we have a 5th starter? Whether it be Dana or Eo I figure we only have 1 hole in our rotation to fill and I hope that hole is filled by Kuroda.

by VegasBlues on Sep 4, 2011 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Eveland 5th starter, Rivera starting 1B – WDGT.

by Xeifrank on Sep 4, 2011 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Remember, Rivera will be 34 next season. He’s only had one season in the last 4 with an OPS over .800, with two season around .720. What numbers would you expect him to put up as the everyday first baseman?

by latenite on Sep 4, 2011 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

The equivelant of Evelands numbers as a starter.

by regfairfield on Sep 4, 2011 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Probably not very good ones. Loneyish.

by Xeifrank on Sep 4, 2011 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions

If we sign Kuroda then Lilly and Eovaldi will probably be 4th and 5th starters. I’d rather have a good rotation as there aren’t many guys that we could get that would improve our offense that much. I’d put Sands in LF and bring back Rivera and Loney and have them platoon. Uribe and Ethier will be better next year which will make our offense better. I think that pitching is more important especially in this division and that if our offense can continue to score 4 to 5 runs a game we can win the division next year.

by dodgers4life on Sep 4, 2011 9:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Well reasoned argument – I agree with all you wrote, except, that Uribe and Eithier “should” be better…

by latenite on Sep 4, 2011 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m confident Ethier will bounce back because he is in a contract year. Uribe struggled because of injuries but next year he will be healthy and will put up solid numbers.

by dodgers4life on Sep 4, 2011 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Bat = Prince

If that’s not possible, Kuroda.

by silverwidow on Sep 4, 2011 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Kershaw v Halladay today

Kershaw’s team with a 56.5% chance of winning (per Vegas) and the Phillies with a 66.67% chance of winning. I think the Phillies are being WAY overrated to win this game. Sure, they should be a solid favorite with Roy pitching, but Anibal Sanchez is no slouch either and the game is in Florida. The HFA itself would be around a 9% swing, so Vegas is saying that if this game were being played in Florida the Phillies would be almost a 76% favorite which would be the biggest favorite of any team this entire season. The biggest so far is 74.7%. What would they put the odds at if Brad Hand were pitching?

by Xeifrank on Sep 4, 2011 10:04 AM PDT reply actions

Xei, have you messed with pitchf/x at all?

Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant

by regfairfield on Sep 4, 2011 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Careful

That could have been said about the Dodgers for most of their winning streak.
