Checking In With Clayton Kershaw & The Triple Crown
The Dodgers head into Sunday's series finale in Atlanta in what I would call a power position. The Dodgers have won six straight and 11 of their last 12 games, and start Clayton Kershaw on the mound going for a sweep of the Braves.
Yesterday we looked at Matt Kemp's triple crown chances. Today, we turn to Kershaw. Here are Kershaw's placement the National League pitching triple crown categories. These are through Saturday's games:
| ERA | Wins | Strikeouts | |||||
| Johnny Cueto | 2.29 | Ian Kennedy | 18-4 | Clayton Kershaw | 212 | ||
| Clayton Kershaw | 2.45 | Clayton Kershaw | 17-5 | Tim Lincecum | 200 | ||
| Roy Halladay | 2.47 | Roy Halladay | 16-5 | Cliff Lee | 198 | ||
| Cliff Lee | 2.59 | Cliff Lee | 15-7 | Roy Halladay | 191 | ||
| Cole Hamels | 2.63 | Yovani Gallardo | 15-9 | Cole Hamels | 169 | ||
Halladay starts today for the Phillies in their series finale in Florida. Ryan Vogelsong, at sixth place just behind Hamels with a 2.633 ERA (Hamels is at 2.627), starts in San Francisco today against the Diamondbacks.
Lineups
Before Sunday's finale in Atlanta, the Dodgers recalled relief pitcher Ramon Troncoso from Triple A Albuquerque. It is Troncoso's third stint with the Dodgers this season. The Dodgers now have 29 players on the active roster, including 16 pitchers.
Atlanta goes righty heavy against Kershaw today, as Brian McCann, Freddie Freeman, Jason Heyward, and (switch-hitter) Chipper Jones all sit.

I thought today was the second of five straight games on KCAL, as that’s what Saturday’s game notes showed, but in fact Monday morning’s game, attended by TBLA Maryland correspondent Greg Stephen, will be on Prime Ticket.
i was about to post my semi-regular rant against MLB blackout rules
but thrown one bone in five I will tone it down to just:
MLB blackout rules are fucking redic.

From mlb dot com
The Dodgers are 15-5 when Rivera starts in left field and 10-0 when he hits cleanup.
Good question. Is Blake still with the team? I notice he hasn’t been put on the DL yet (I guess no need to do so at this time).
I would expect that when Mitchel plays sellers or gordon gets the day off
with miles or carrol always in the lineup(to start the game at least)
If my math is right...
Kershaw needs to throw 18 consecutive innings of shutout ball to get his ERA below Cueto’s.
It’s amazing how close to perfect those guys are.
If Kershaw can go every remaining start to at least 7ip
and give up at most 2 ER (which, by looking at opponents other than Atlanta, I think is highly possible) then I think he’ll end up having an ERA better than Cueto and Halladay et al. One slip-up though and I think he won’t make it,
I
Remember thinking how Bochy was wasting Lincecum in 2008 by having him pitch all those extra innings to win a CYA.
Would you rather have a bat or a SP?
Since money looks tight for next year would you rather resign Kuroda and have a good rotation or sign a bat and have a mediocre 5th starter.
the rotation next year
is kershaw billz lilly. Even if we sign kuroda we still need a 5th or 4th starter(depending on how you view lilly).
I don't think so
eveland could easily be the guy, with Eo being the 6th starter waiting in the wings. We’ll have to see what eveland does the rest of the year.
Remember, Rivera will be 34 next season. He’s only had one season in the last 4 with an OPS over .800, with two season around .720. What numbers would you expect him to put up as the everyday first baseman?
The equivelant of Evelands numbers as a starter.

If we sign Kuroda then Lilly and Eovaldi will probably be 4th and 5th starters. I’d rather have a good rotation as there aren’t many guys that we could get that would improve our offense that much. I’d put Sands in LF and bring back Rivera and Loney and have them platoon. Uribe and Ethier will be better next year which will make our offense better. I think that pitching is more important especially in this division and that if our offense can continue to score 4 to 5 runs a game we can win the division next year.
Well reasoned argument – I agree with all you wrote, except, that Uribe and Eithier “should” be better…
I’m confident Ethier will bounce back because he is in a contract year. Uribe struggled because of injuries but next year he will be healthy and will put up solid numbers.

Kershaw v Halladay today
Kershaw’s team with a 56.5% chance of winning (per Vegas) and the Phillies with a 66.67% chance of winning. I think the Phillies are being WAY overrated to win this game. Sure, they should be a solid favorite with Roy pitching, but Anibal Sanchez is no slouch either and the game is in Florida. The HFA itself would be around a 9% swing, so Vegas is saying that if this game were being played in Florida the Phillies would be almost a 76% favorite which would be the biggest favorite of any team this entire season. The biggest so far is 74.7%. What would they put the odds at if Brad Hand were pitching?
Xei, have you messed with pitchf/x at all?

Careful
That could have been said about the Dodgers for most of their winning streak.
