Dodgers Wednesday Links: Andre Ethier, Stephen Strasburg, Casey Blake
Here are your Wednesday morning Dodgers links...
- Andre Ethier's two-run insurance double in the ninth inning Tuesday night was his 30th double of the season. Only four Dodgers ever have more seasons with 30 or more doubles than Ethier's five: Zack Wheat, Dixie Walker, Jackie Robinson, and Steve Garvey, all with six seasons. Ethier and Robinson are the only two Dodgers ever to have five consecutive seasons with at least 30 doubles.
- Rod Barajas channeled Jim Tracy as he told Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times about Stephen Strasburg: "Have I seen guys who throw harder than him or seem that the ball comes faster? Yeah, I have. I think what makes him special are the secondary pitches. Everybody knows he has that good curveball and he's got that great changeup also."
- Jon Weisman at Dodger Thoughts compared the speeds of Stephen Strasburg and Ted Lilly on Tuesday night, but not of their pitches.
- Casey Blake underwent neck surgery on Tuesday in Los Angeles and will be in a neck brace for a few weeks. Jeff Seidel of MLB.com has the details.
- R.J. Anderson at Baseball Prospectus wonders whether the Dodgers' second-half success in 2011 will translate into an improved record in 2012. The verdict: "If you have to make a guess about whether they’ll improve on their win-loss total based on their second-half record, you might as well flip a coin."
- Friday, September 16 is singles night at Dodger Stadium, and I'm not talking about a tribute to Jamey Carroll. Roberto Baly at Vin Scully is my Homeboy has all the details.

Delias asked about Sellers defense:
This was the Baseball HQ scouting report when he was brought up on Aug 12th:
Justin Sellers (SS, LAD)
To replace Dee Gordon on the active roster, the Dodgers selected the contract of the 25-year-old Sellers from Triple-A. Acquired from the Athletics in April ‘09, Sellers has broken out in the power department the last two seasons. Widely regarded as a light-hitting middle infielder, the right-handed hitter has hit 14 HR in both ’10 and ’11. He has a slight frame – 5’10 160 pounds – and consistently makes contact with a short, quick swing. He has a solid understanding of the strike zone and has a selective eye at the plate. Sellers offers defensive versatility in his ability to play the outfield corners and the middle infield. He has quick, soft hands and excellent range. He is a career .268/.356/.390 hitter in the minors. He was originally a 6th round selection in the ’05 draft.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Kind of cool we bought him for cash. How many minor leaguers have ever been purchased with cash and ended up having a major league career. I’d expect Sellers from this point on at least being a utility guy for the next five years.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

joke used to be that if Billy Beane called you, hang up. Maybe that only applies to everyone but Ned Colletti.
@RB_GScott
It was always a bad joke, Mr Beane has made more bad trades then good ones. An outfield of Cargo / Nelson Cruz / Andre Ethier
would sure beat Milton Bradley / Kieth Ginter / Michael Taylor

he got jack shit for Hudson, and Zito left for two 2007 draft picks who became Grant Desme and Sean Doolittle
@RB_GScott
In dealing Hudson/Mulder/ZIto he only ended up with Dan Haren which he parlayed into a gold mine but gave up part of the gold mine for Holliday who he totally failed on when he flipped him for Wallach who eventually was flipped for M Taylor.
Barton the ultimate Beane guy has been quite the failure.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
The joke was popularized BEFORE he made these moves
obviously he has sucked at being a GM as of late, but it seems disenginious to use only these moves to discuss this.
No it doesn’t, we are now talking five years, how much are we allowed to go back?
No one said he “sucked” just pointed out that he is nothing close to infallible. Sucked is your choice.

Well we our research to show how he’s not, since you think preBeane was so brilliant why don’t you do yours and show us the trades he won pre 2005? No drafts, no free agent moves, trades where he made the other GM look silly?
He supposedly fleeced the Royals over Jeremy Giambi but I doubt he was laughing to much over that trade.
This is the one he gets a lot of love for:
January 8, 2001: Traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Oakland Athletics with A.J. Hinch to the Kansas City Royals. The Oakland Athletics sent Ben Grieve to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays sent Cory Lidle to the Oakland Athletics. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays sent Roberto Hernandez to the Kansas City Royals. The Kansas City Royals sent Johnny Damon and Mark Ellis to the Oakland Athletics.

Beane became GM in 1998, since then the A’s have drafted: Zito, Swisher, Papelbon, Harden, Ethier twice, Street, Blanton, Kurt Suzuki, Ludwick, Cahill, Laird, Bailey, Zieler, Braden, Dan Johnson, Mike Leake, to name the more successful ones.
@RB_GScott
Are you giving him credit for drafting players he didn’t sign like Leake?
Because if you are the Dodgers have drafted and not signed the likes of David Price, Chase Utley.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Yeah, I give the Dodgers credit for drafting those players. Though IIRC, Price said he wouldn’t sign for anything, so that was a wasted pick if true and they get negative points.
@RB_GScott
It was in the 19th round. No real waste. Take the gamble to see if he has any flexibility in his position to go to college.

Lee said the same thing, you can’t play that game both ways. Players change their money when money shows up as the dude in this draft showed when he told everyone not to draft him and then signed with the Pirates.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
On that note I think you can only take credit for players you drafted and signed.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I figure it’s hard enough to identify future major leaguers that drafting them, even if you don’t sign them, is a sign you have a good idea of how to evaluate talent. That being said, it’s far easier to evaluate good talent than middling talent you think might develop into something useful.

i think picks should be assigned to teams. If you get drafted out of high school by the Reds but want to play college ball either to raise your value or for the college experience, fine. But when you’re ready to sign you can only negotiate with the Reds unless they trade your rights for a different pick, and get no compensation if you never sign.
@RB_GScott
So, I can make a vague movie reference and get it deleted, but you can make a slavery joke?
@RB_GScott
Seems different to me since mine was not a joke. Slavery is a term

Shockingly the NL did not have much problem during the non draft years.
The Yankee’s are often pointed to as the team who abused the practice but I think that is a wifes tail. They raided the KC team for a good portion of their talent which would not be allowed in todays world. The Yankee’s and Red Sox have dominated the Japanese market but I would say the smarter low cost approach the Dodgers have accomplished with Nomo, Saito, Kuroda was much more productive.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I’d rather see smarter beat money, I’d rather 18 year old kids get to choose where they want to play. I’d rather a country who espouses free market’s allow individuals that same choice.
I don’t graduate from college with my MBA and get drafted into a Big firm, I pick and choose who I will work for. If I don’t like how that company handles it’s affairs I’m free to choose another. I find it ridiculous that athletes are not given the same choices simply because we are afraid of the competitive balance.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Its more like
deciding to go work for a company, and they tell you what city they want you to work in. You can’t consider all 30 teams truly seperate entities.

No Theo the wonderboy
The A’s get Youkilis as compensation from Boston
DePo becomes A’s GM
Dodgers don’t get DePo, so they either keep Dan Evans or (more likely) get another state-dude GM, like Theo, who would be available. Maybe having people skills allows Theo to keep his job through any struggles in 2005. No Colletti.

The only reason I did not ask the question re most games for a LA Dodger since 1958
I did not know if anyone would come up with Ted Sizemore without a lot of hints.
But a new question, since the first major expansion (1961), name the first year player who played in the most games. And no, it is not Albert Pujols who played in 161 games in his first season in 2001.
But the hint is that it did come after the DH rule was in place.
