Not singling out Jerry Crasnick because almost every reporter does this
but Crasnick went to the ’numbers at new park; card:
I just checked Chad Qualls’ career numbers at Citizens Bank Park. It’s an understatement to say they’re "ugly.’’
Qualls is 2-2 with an 11.12 ERA at CBP. He has allowed 21 hits and 7 home runs in 11 1/3 innings. Ouch.
To be fair to Crasnick, he didn’t infer anything from said numbers.

I stand corrected

It’s a good sign because he’s durable, but those splits are kind of frightening.

Agree completely, Joe. Indianapolis is a fun town, a pleasant place to visit. Not somewhere I would live, but that’s no knock against the town or the people that call it home.

Even if that's true
Why would the NFL care about that? They want ticket sales and TV ratings (both of which is like shooting fish in a barrel), neither of which would be impacted by having a more bad ass location.
So the NFL can spread the love to football towns across the country and reward cities for building new stadiums.

by Eric Stephen on Jan 31, 2012 9:53 AM PST up reply actions
I’m horrified to have to report this, John, but your girlfriend’s claim is only slightly exaggerated. Of the 220 persons who worked on The Conqueror on location in Utah in 1955, 91 had contracted cancer as of the early 1980s and 46 died of it, including stars John Wayne, Susan Hayward, and Agnes Moorehead, and director Dick Powell. Experts say under ordinary circumstances only 30 people out of a group of that size should have gotten cancer. The cause? No one can say for sure, but many attribute the cancers to radioactive fallout from U.S. atom bomb tests in nearby Nevada. The whole ghastly story is told in The Hollywood Hall of Shame by Harry and Michael Medved. But let’s start at the beginning.
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
a) John Wayne also smoked 6 packs a day. Just sayin.
b) the rate of cancer is actually pretty close to that in the general population
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_wayne#Death
Although the 41% incidence of cancer in the cast and crew is very close to to that of the general population,57 many contend radioactive fallout from these tests contaminated the film location and poisoned the film crew working there.5859 Despite the suggestion that Wayne’s 1964 lung cancer and his 1979 stomach cancer resulted from nuclear contamination, he himself believed his lung cancer to have been a result of his six-pack-a-day cigarette habit.60

I feel qualified to comment on the various things about Indy on here, as I live 20 minutes away and sit here at my work in town right now. It has been quite interesting to see these Indy comments on TBLA, never know what you’re gonna see here.
1) It’s not cold here this week – high of 60 today and high of at least 46 the rest of the week. I know, to many thats cold, but nice for Jan-Feb here.
2) Downtown Indy has become a much better place over the last few years, with many areas revitalized in the downtown district. No small part of this is Victory Field (one of the best minor league parks for sure), Lucas Oil Stadium, and Conseco (or Bankers Life or whatever) fieldhouse. Its really an outstanding area to catch a game of all three sports since you can walk to many bars and restaurants from each of the stadiums. Not sure I’ve been to another area with all three in an active downtown area like this.
3) As far as downtown being “allegedly happening” I guess it depends on your definition of happening. Unless expectations are too high though, I don’t think people will be dissappointed in the immediate vicinity. There are no shortages of restaurants and bars, all within walking distance of each other and cold weather actually makes them more active than summer. Leave downtown and all bets are off.
4) Will people travel here for a super bowl? There are thousands here now just for the activities that won’t even be attended the game. It was estimated the Super Bowl Village had 100,000 visitors Saturday in freezing, windy weather, outside.
5) Hotels are indeed way overpriced but booked everywhere. Hotels are being reported as booked over an hour away on interstates as well as towns on smaller highways.

Whatever question Nolander ended up thinking he was asking, this should probably have answered it.
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
It started with me being surprised indy had managed to completely book all their hotels for the super bowl
but since I don’t know how their hotel capacity compares to Miami or NO its hard to say whether it is signifigant or not. It evolved into me defending myself from the Indy apologists.

This here is what we in the industry like to call a hermeneutical lens.
This means that your interpretations of data could be, in fact, colored by who you are and what you believe.
Now, you can say that YOU don’t think that Indy is a happening place to party. But your lens, as it were, is by no means an objective one, and therefore cannot be applied wholesale to everyone else.

Yet, he’s still right in that it isn’t perceived to be as much of a party town as the normal Super Bowl rotation of cities are. There may be tons of great things to do in Indy but it in no way has the reputation of NO or Miami.
I’m pretty sure that’s all he was saying at first.
I’m willing to be wrong, but I don’t think amongst people of means, y’know the ones who can afford these trips, Bourbon Street is seen as the mecca of a good time.
by Josie Becker on Jan 31, 2012 3:09 PM PST up reply actions
For the people that are actually attending the game I would probably agree. This conversation wasn’t about those people though. It was more about people that flock to the SB cities just for the partying and the atmosphere that surrounds the SB (it was always assumed that the game would sell out no matter where it was held). Most of those people would most likely be more into the Bourbon Street scene.
You were “shocked people are actually willing to go to indy for the super bowl”. People responded that it shouldn’t be so shocking.

My 2nd favorite cartoon as a kid
When I hear these lyrics I think of you:
When you find yourself in danger,
When you’re threatened by a stranger,
When it looks like you will take a lickin’,
(puk, puk, puk, puk)
There is someone waiting,
Who will hurry up and rescue you,
just Call for Super Chicken!
(puk, ack!)
Fred, if you’re afraid you’ll have to overlook it,
Besides you knew the job was dangerous when you took it
(puk, ack!)
He will drink his super sauce
And throw the bad guys for a loss
And he will bring them in alive and kickin’
(puk, puk, puk, puk)
There is one thing you should learn
When there is no one else to turn to
Call for Super Chicken!
(puk, puk, puk, puk)
Call for Super Chicken!
(puk, ack!)

I remember the 95 and 96 teams making the playoffs, but not so much who stood out on those teams. I would say I first started really watching baseball circa 2000-2001, so there is a good chance I just happened to see a Don Sutton picture at an Angels game or on TV and made that connection.

They apparently charged a General Admission and on top of that you had to buy tickets to each individual area.
When Disneyland opened in 1955, visitors purchased an admission ticket to the park at Main Gate booths, then purchased separate admission inside for each attraction. Less than 3 months after opening, Disney began selling “Value Books”, each of which contained several of each coupon labeled “A” through “C”, to supplement the pay-per-ride system. Attractions were then designated as “A”, “B”, or “C” attractions and visitors needed to either purchase a specified coupon from a nearby booth or present the discount coupon book with the correct coupon attached.
They were completely done away with in 1982 which explains why I didn’t know this prior to today.

Presumably there’s a kind of a quid pro quo for sources. I imagine sometimes teams want information floated for their own purposes, so the same source can go to the press with that. In exchange for that, and to maintain the report, the source needs to provide tidbits on other things.

You kind of have to have a better OBP then ..300 to get the chance to steal 60 bases. Only two players since integration have stolen 60 bases with an OBP < .300. 11 have done it with an OBP < = .310. "Camden Spring"
Some of the yuppies over a street went crazy because another guy parked his old pickup outside his house and two tires went flat. They went so far as to call a meeting and try to overthrow the “do-nothing” neighbohood association. Then they upped their demands tp speed bumps because cars doing 25 MPH are going too fast to comfortably let their kids play in the street. Because, they want to let their kids play in the street. We live in Camden Ridge, so I thought the revolution needed a name.

What city do you live in?
Back when I was working in city government, handicapped parking spaces were one of the requests that were never denied. You just had to make a formal request, the a city engineer would visit the house to make sure the the space would be feasible, and if possible, the public works dept. would even install a handicapped apron onto to the sidewalk.
That's good question
I don’t think so because most of the handicapped spaces were installed in R-1 zones.
I've
never seen a handicapped parking space (painted curb, apron etc…) in a residential (housing tract) in my life before. It is pretty much an unwritten rule on my street that you park in front of your own house. So much so that one neighbor will go around knocking on people’s door if he thinks they or someone visiting them has parked in front of his house. Especially when he is trying to park his big RV.
Never understood that one. My wife will look out the door when there’s a car parked in front of our house. Sure it’s neighborly to not park in front of someone’s house, but it is a public spot. I guess my frame of reference is growing up near the beach. All kinds of strangers parked on our block.
My dad is bad on this one, he’ll yell at the neighbors across the street if they park in front of our house.

I won't get angry if someone parks in front of my front door

Either the 26-inning Brooklyn Dodgers vs. Boston Braves game, or more likely the 33-inning Triple A game that was suspended and played over 2 different days in 1981, that featured both Cal Ripken and Wade Boggs. The resumption of the game got a lot of press because it was during the baseball strike.

Koufax’s Perfect game. I had tickets to the game. My buddy and I had saved our money for months to buy them, and we neglected to tell our parents. We were 15, and had planned to take a bus from Canoga Park the the Stadium, Mom said “No Way you’re going downtown, on a bus, at night by yourselves!” So, I listened to the game on my transistor sister as we were driving down Sepulveda to my aunt’s house in Hemosa Beach. By the time we got there I was fuming! After the game was over, (I brooded in the corner during the game.) I gave the silent treatment to Mom after that. Dad was also strangely silent during this whole ordeal. I finally forgave her last year.

Thinking more about Gary's earlier question
Outside of Kershaw, the Dodger I would probably most want to extend right now is Andre Ethier. I don’t think he will be easily replaced.
Especially at 6/17.5
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
The trouble is:
1) He won’t be easily replaced, but
2) He might be able to get somebody to bite on a mega-deal
I support the idea of having Ethier around for the next four years or so, but if somebody wants to give him, say, Jayson Werth money, would you want to match that to keep him?

When you put it like that, there is nothing to argue with. But you know it’s not that simple. Paterno as much as anyone built Penn State from a podunk state school into a major university. He donated so much money to the school that the library bears his name. Football might have made Penn State, but it used the money well.
That is why this whole thing is such a disaster — for the victims, first and foremost, of course, but also for the entire community. The reason this happened is because nobody at the entire school wanted to tip the apple cart.
Of course it’s about way more than football games.

heroes are hard to let go of. Like really really hard. It’s fair to say this whole process has been close to iconoclasty for that community, and while as an outsider it’s easy to say “he wrong” and even as an insider “he wrong” but that may not equate to “he bad man” inside the community

I guess it’s that cult like mentality around Paterno that weirds me out even more. It’s not the people that try to find a balance in this issue that weird me out, it’s the Loneys/Kutchers of the world that can’t even figure out why they fired him, or the various people that claim the Board of Trustees murdered Paterno. JoePa was royally screwed by McCreary. If he was an employee of the university, with responsibilities that would in any way involved oversight of children, he has to have been a mandated reporter of child abuse. As a mandated reporter, we are constantly told that we MUST report any suspected abuse immediately to either local law enforcement or DCFS. Under no circumstances are we supposed to report it to anybody else, including bosses, but McCreary seemed to think that was sufficient. He passed the buck and tried to come off as a sympathetic character. He should see jail time, but probably won’t.

I can’t find exactly but I believe my wild ass guess projection for the Dodgers’ start in 2011 was 36-21 after two months.
They were 26-30 after May 31 (had a rainout in Pittsburgh), and 26-31 after 57 games. They didn’t win their 36th game until game #80. Ouch.
For 2012, I’m swayed by the early schedule, so I’ll say after play on May 31, the Dodgers will be 30-21.

Here are the 2012 monthly win percentages
my sim spit out from the 2012 schedule, back when fewer free agents were signed and it had the Dodgers winning just over 80 games (now close to 78).
April (.4984)
May (.5225)
June (.5043)
July (.4880)
August (.4846)
September (.4703)
A quick look at their May schedule shows them playing @COL, @CHN, SF, COL, ARI, @SD, STL, @ARI, HOU, MIL – which is 18 out of 28 games at home.
So you will only be four wins shy of the correct number through May :)

Andre
Kemp
Juan
I’d expect at least 3 of those will not be starting by Aug 1st. If we are in contention then we will need better players then Ellis / Ellis, and Juan, if we are not in contention then for once Loney and Andre will be sent packing, Ellis will be benched, Fedex will get promoted.
So this is not to say the team is going to suck, we could still be in contention and I think we would still have three positions changed by Aug 1st.

I understand the snark but full season simulations based on current rosters seems pointless. Rosters are dynamic as are team in 2011 showed.

Pointless, unless you want a projection of how many games a team will win. There are always error bars on these things, nobody is denying that. Vegas doesn’t stop projecting seasonal win totals because someone tells them that rosters can change.
Sorry Xiefrank, I was just in one of my moods where everything is pointless.

There is also a Dodger-related quote in there:
His approach fosters the culture the United Nations recognized in giving the inaugural Positive Peace Award for a sports team to the Diamondbacks. It’s why MLB has Hall on its short list of candidates to replace Selig when he retires, perhaps as soon as 2014. I should go easy on young mister Down. I was petrified of girls/women in high school and my early college days.
I was cured of that by his current age of 22 however.

His numbers are great, an extension is no gimme, and I don’t see McCann moving soon. Adding a top shelf hitting catcher would make me happy. I don’t know what his defense is supposed to be though.
Couldn’t have come soon enough.
