Clayton Kershaw, Andre Ethier named finalists for Gold Glove awards

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is a finalist for an American League gold glove. The awards will be announced at 6 p.m. PT on Tuesday on ESPN2.

Clayton Kershaw picked up the Roberto Clemente Award on Sunday night in Detroit, and he could take home another trophy for his mantel on Tuesday. Kershaw and teammate Andre Ethier were named finalists for Rawlings Gold Glove Awards on Monday.

The winners, one of three finalists at each position, will be announced on Tuesday at 6 p.m. PT on ESPN2. The Gold Gloves are voted on by managers and up to six coaches from each team in the corresponding league, with the caveat of not being able to vote for players on your own team.

Adrian Gonzalez, who played 123 of his 159 games in 2012 in the American League, was named a finalist for a Gold Glove at first base in the American League. Gonzalez won Gold Gloves at first base in the AL with the Red Sox in 2011, and with the Padres in the NL in 2008 and 2009. Gonzalez is a finalist at first base along with Mark Teixeira and Eric Hosmer.

Both Ethier and Kershaw won Gold Gloves last season.

Kershaw is a finalist at National League pitcher, along with Mark Buehrle and Bronson Arroyo. Buehrle has won Gold Gloves in each of the last three seasons in the AL with the White Sox. Kershaw led the major leagues with 11 pickoffs this season.

If Kershaw wins, he would join Andy Messersmith (1974-1975) and Greg Maddux (2006, 2008) as the only Dodgers pitchers to win multiple Gold Gloves.

Ethier has had negative defensive wins above replacement (using Total Zone rating) in each of the last five years. His Ultimate Zone Rating was above average last season after three straight seasons of well below average. This season, Ethier's UZR was 2.2 runs below average. The Dodgers in their press release (as well as managers and coaches in their voting, apparently) touted Ethier's .988 fielding percentage, which ranked second among National League right fielders. His 282-game errorless streak from July 10, 2010 to July 25, 2012 was the second-longest streak by a Dodgers outfielder, trailing only Brett Butler's 306-game run from 1992 to 1994.

Ethier joins right field finalists Jay Bruce and Jason Heyward in the National League. If Ethier does win, he would join Willie Davis (1971-1973), Raul Mondesi (1995, 1997), and Matt Kemp (2009, 2011) as the only Dodgers outfielders to win multiple Gold Gloves.
