And surprising, I'm not talking about this offseason. I am actually talking about next trade deadline and into that offseason. It was reported today that the Yankee's Robinson Cano would more than likely take a $200M from the Yankees to keep him from free agency. We know the Yankees want to avoid the luxury tax, so the connection comes in. 2nd base is the only place the Dodgers are at a big unknown past next year. Cruz has to be coming into Spring Training as the 3B, and Hanley as the shortstop. I expect Dee Gordon to be in AAA, unless he plays amazingly well in Spring Training and does a lot of work in the offseason. So here it goes...
Lets say that Mark Ellis is either A. hurt or B. horrible. And somehow, the Yankees are out of the postseason race. Derek Jeter will be retiring soon, and they most likely will need a replacement. Gordon could step into that role. Meanwhile Cano would provide another major bat. Obviously, more would be included, and a trade mid season is very unlikely, so many things would have to fall into place. The Dodgers have to be winning. Yankees have to be losing and out of it. Ellis has to be bad. Gordon has to be good, with Cruz still being good enough to hold his spot down.
Therefore, looking ahead to next offseason, I could see it being more realistic. The Chairman has already come out and said they are going to spend more money. 2B is the only place without a noticeable solid player signed long term. If Cano somehow hits FA, would you like to see him in Dodger Blue? Would it be too much for people to get excited about? Does it have no chance of happening?
