Randy Choate signs 3-year deal with Cardinals

The left-handed specialist signed a three-year contract with the Cardinals.

While there has been limited news on the Dodgers front so far on day three of the winter meetings, one of their free agents has found a new home. Left-handed relief pitcher Randy Choate has reportedly signed a three-year contract with the Cardinals, worth $7.5 million.

Not bad for a 37-year old specialist to sign the most lucrative and longest contract of his career. Welcome to the new market in baseball.

Choate led the National League with 80 appearances in 2012, including 36 games in just over two months with the Dodgers. Choate had a 3.03 ERA in 38⅔ innings with the Marlins and Dodgers this year, and held left-handed batters to just .158/.243/.218 in 116 plate appearances.

Another left-handed reliever is off the market, as free agent Sean Burnett, who agreed to a two-year deal with the Angels for roughly $8 million.

The Angels also signed another pitcher on Wednesday, inking another Dodgers free agent, Joe Blanton, to a $15 million contract over two years, plus an option for 2015.

As for the Dodgers and their pursuit of Zack Greinke, there really hasn't been much news. Ned Colletti did meet with Greinke's agent, Casey Close, on Wednesday, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweeted earlier that he heard a Greinke deal could be done "in a couple of days." But outside of that non-news, all we have is just about every reporter saying the Dodgers and Rangers are the two main pursuers of Greinke, with the Dodgers acknowledged as the eventually highest bidder.

But for now, we wait.
