Kobe was also a huge chucker tonight going something like 11 for 30 (1 for 5 from 3.) If he doesn’t pull down 10 rebounds, he probably ends up with a negative WP tonight.

I don’t understand how the Lakers rank as one of the best defenses in the NBA. Whenever I comment on twitter how crappy their defense is, I get killed by someone with a quiver of new fangled basketball stats. Their defense just doesn’t pass the eye ball test for me. They give up a ton of easy layups. I don’t see that from the teams they play against. My guess is Bynum someone how raises their defense ??
Defensive rating of 101.1 (before tonight) which is 11th out of 30.
by Michael White on Feb 10, 2012 8:06 PM PST up reply actions
Jon Barry made this point at halftime
When the PG blows by his defender on the pick and roll so quickly and takes a straight line to the hoop, the big men don’t have time to rotate and threaten his shot. What’s needed is a PG who can at least stay on Lin’s hip and trouble him somewhat. Blake does this better than Fisher, who has been the worst pick and roll defender in the league for at least the past three seasons.

Yeah that is definitely in the realm of possibilities. They probably have a better chance of missing the playoffs than making the NBA finals.
As of right now, 3 way tie for the 6 through 8 spots between LAL, Portland and Denver. Utah 1/2 game back, Memphis 1 game back. If Memphis gets ZBo back soon…
by Michael White on Feb 10, 2012 8:00 PM PST up reply actions
My quick perusal of the Lakers schedule on that day had their worst case scenario IMO at 18-17 through 35 games. And that was including a 2-4 Grammy trip, and they are 2-3.
They are 15-12 now, but their next five games are all winnable (road at Toronto and Phoenix, home for Atlanta, Phoenix, and Portland). I am assuming losses at Dallas and OKC, and they host Minnesota on February 29. They would really have to suck to be 18-17 at the end of February.

Love Lowry, I wouldn’t move him either. Simmons had one of his crazy trade ideas (why hasn’t this happened yet?!?) artices today which had Gasol to Houston, LAL number 1 pick to Boston and Rondo and Jermaine O’Neal to LAL. Of course there’s a half dozen other players in a trade that has no shot of happening.

Yep

jeremy lin
He’s Steve Nash.
Never seen a player play this well after never playing at all.
He’s definitely legit.
Knicks seem to be way better with the offense going thru him…when Carmelo comes back i wonder how their chemistry will be though…The Suns under D’Antoni had everything ran thru Nash/Stoudamire…not sure if their offense will run that well with the ball out of Lin’s hands and in Carmelo’s.
As someone with at least a decent enough education you say a lot of stupid shit.
Steve Nash is a 2 time MVP and one of the better PG’s (if not the best) of his era.
Jeremy Lin has had four good games in his life. Two of those games were against the Wizards and Nets. One of the other two games he had Derek Fisher guarding him for approximately 23 minutes.
In two of those games he had a total of 14 turnovers.
Jeremy Lin is playing some really good ball right now. Lets see how he plays when teams actually game plan for him. Him and Stoudamire could actually make a pretty good duo if he can continue playing his up-tempo game and start limiting the turnovers some more. He wont mesh with Carmelo at all though and there is no way in hell the Knicks will do anything to upset Melo (even if it is for the good of the team).
Game plan what?
Its basketball.
Its basic.
Steve Nash is a 2 time MVP.
But he didnt do anything till his 5th or 6th year in the league.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/nashst01.html
Nash’s 1st 2 years in the NBA – he started 11 games total.
He didnt average more than 10 points a game till his 6th year in the league.
Even Magic Johnson said Lin plays exactly like Nash.
They are the exact same size, play the exact same way, and play for the same coach – a coach that made Nash into a star and his system will do the same for Lin because Lin has the skills to do it. You can watch 1 game or 4 games and see he has the skills to play NBA basketball.
Baron Davis should just retire because he’s never going to get off the bench.
Wizards he played against John Wall – the #1 overall pick in the draft.
Nets he went up against Deron Williams.
Stop hating.
I know close to nothing about anything but...
You can watch 1 game or 4 games and see he has the skills to play NBA basketball.
wasn’t the guy released by not 1 but 2 teams? Seems like a guy worth being bullish on until he has more then 4 games under his belt
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
the rockets made a bad mistake
And Daryl Morey just this week said it on twitter.
He said they didnt realize how good Lin was.
With Golden State it was obvious why he didnt play – Steph Curry and Monte Ellis both need the ball in their hands, and are both good players.
I dont think Lin would have as much success if he was in another system (if he was on the Lakers he’d probably be playing like Steve Blake)…but with D’Antoni he’s the right guy in the right situation.
Basketball is a ten-man game
Lin excels at it. However, he can’t run the pick and roll in two-man tryouts for draft scouts or in scrimmages/practices when it’s three on three and he’s paired up with a couple scrubs. If you’re not drafted, you have a whole host of non-basketball factors to overcome if you want significant playing time, the foremost being guys on guaranteed contracts. Lin tore up the summer league in 2010, GS outbid the Lakers for his services, then he got stuck at the end of the bench behind Monta Ellis and Steph Curry. The Warriors cut him, Houston picked him up and sent him to the D-League, and he tore it up as well. Houston cut him to free up a roster spot and because they’re committed to two very good PGs in Kyle Lowry and Goran Dragic.
Each time he’s done well, it’s been in an actual game, where all ten players and the entire court come into play. Kupchak has never been competent at drafting PGs (Crittenton instead of Aaron Brooks, Sun Yue instead of Ramon Sessions, etc.), so it’s no surprise that Mitch passed him up twice in the 2010 second round so he could select Ebanks and Caracter.
by The Dude Abides on Feb 11, 2012 12:56 AM PST up reply actions
Lin is a good player, and will be a good player in this league. But taking four games, where he is shooting an astronomical percentage from everywhere on the floor (especially at the rim and in the midrange game. He’s at like 80% from the rim, which is completely unsustainable and not realistic) and using that to compare him to an all-time great is a little silly. The thing that separates Nash from everyone else is that he is one of the best shooters to ever play the game. Lin has never been much of an outside shooter in his basketball career, and he will need to sustain his shooting for over 4 games to change that opinion. Without making jumpers, he cannot penetrate and finish like he has been doing. He will also be defended differently, and while he obviously is smart enough to make his own adjustments, there will be some down periods for him.
I wish nothing but the best for him, and this run is pretty awesome, but its just not sustainable, especially when Melo (the biggest ball stopper in the league) comes back and demands his 20 shots a game.
by UCLADodger32 on Feb 10, 2012 11:54 PM PST up reply actions
the chemistry with melo is going to be interesting
i think D’antoni’s system works best with the ball in the PG’s hands.
As for Lin’s run being unsustainable…he shoots alot of easy open jumpers. He really does take good smart shots. And almost everything is off of pick and roll. So if the defender goes under, he’s shooting an open shot. If he’s hedged…he splits the double and drives and or passes out of the double team.
D’Antoni said tonight:
“I don’t know what to tell you,” Mike D’Antoni said. “I have never seen this. It is not often that a guy is going to play four games, the best you are going to see, and nobody knows how he is. That is hard to do.”
John Wall? The game before Wall played Lin he went up against Jerryd Bayless. Bayless scored 30 that game. That was 19 points more than he’s averaged per game this year and 12 points above his previous season high and 1 point below his career high for a game. Most good PG’s (and even some mediocre ones) score at will on him. He isn’t really known for being a defensive PG.
Deron Williams? Have you bothered to watch a single Nets game this year? Deron Williams hasn’t even been trying this year.
Oh, I really like both Wall and Williams as players. I’m not trying to bash them in anyway.
We ran into the same problem. :)

Any Advice?
A friend of mine has got me involved in a new NL Scoresheet baseball fantasy league (a perpetual league). We have just started our draft, and I am supposed to make my first round pick (#10 overall) in an hour and a half. These are the players who have already gone off the board, in order:
Kershaw
Tulowitzski
Kemp
Upton
Votto
McCutchen
Stanton
Gonzalez (Carlos)
Strasburg
Does anybody familiar with Scoresheet fantasy baseball have any advice about who I should pick #10 overall? I also pick #15 overall, so I wouldn’t mind suggestions for that pick either.

Padres about to get a new TV deal, could be worth $1.5 billion over 20 years. This Tom Krasovic story shows the difference in revenue and stake in the TV deal:
An upfront payment to the Padres is still being negotiated, although in place are yearly rights fees that start at $30 million in 2012 — nearly double last year’s total — and grow to approximately $75 million to $80 million in the final year. The percentage increase in rights fees will not be the same each year.
Because the equity position doesn’t establish fixed dividends or how much the Padres would receive for selling their shares, it’s largely guesswork as to what the total economic value of the deal will be. At the high end, I’ve confirmed, the entire deal could pay the Padres $1.5 billion, which jibes with the $75 million average reported by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale on Thursday. But that number assumes strong cash flow for Fox that, in the end, would mean cable subscribers in San Diego pay considerably higher rates over the life of the deal than they do now. Put another way, $1.5 billion represents a best-case scenario for the Padres, or close to it.
Surprising number. Wasn’t the Angels’ number $1.5 billion? Or was that over a shorter timeframe. Padres apathy is strong in SD.

Those Braves, who had a 23-year old Bob McAdoo score 34.5 points and grab 14.1 rebounds per game, would win their next four to start 21-8.
But then they lost 6 of 7. Still ended up with the best record in franchise history at 49-33 (.598).
This year’s Clippers’ team should be able to beat that win%. Need to win 40 games (.606), so they would need to finish 23-18 the rest of the way. Easy peasy.

It was great meeting you guys.
In the finals, LFP2 came back from a 3rd inning 5-12 deficit against Dodger Diaries to win 18-12. Dodger Diaries had a great pitcher who put all kinds of crazy backspin on the ball, and LFP struggled to square it up the first few innings, on top of making quite a few uncharacteristic errors at the onset. They stormed back in the 3rd and 4th with a couple bombs.

The one thing I noticed about almost all of the teams today was that nearly everyone had skills, and could hit a bit. The only thing missing was the coordination between players that only comes with practice together. As a former player and manager, I have found that anyone who can walk and chew gum can play softball with some success, but with practice together, a formidable team can be had. Hence: Spring training. It takes awhile to figure where everyone is going to be at any time on every play, and it takes practice to hit well.
With the talent on the TBLA team, next time might be different, as long as the injuries can be held to a minimum.
Anyway, I enjoyed watching today, and wish I could have stayed to the end, but the wind was playing havoc with my eyes, and I didn’t want to drive home into the sun. Too dangerous for me and the other cars on the road.
It was fun meeting all of you, and putting faces to the names that I see everyday on TBLA. Wish I had been young enough to play today. Brought back some fun memories.

The “shhshers” from that episode are my friends who live in Redondo Beach. They are also friends with the It’s Always Sunny cast. They were all sitting in a bar, presumably being loud, and someone shhed them. That’s how the cast came up with the episode idea, and then they let my friends be in the episode even though they are clearly not actors.

Way back in the 90’s My team and I played in a weekend tourney. We played 3 games on Saturday, and because we lost the first game Sunday, and than being in the loser’s bracket, we ended up playing six games. Got done at about 5 PM. Came in second, but the real pain was the next day. I slept for 16 hours and missed work on Monday.

Who else on Lakers would you rather have the ball at the end than Kobe?
Plus he played clutch defense.
And also that Raptor player took more than 6 seconds before they tried to call time out. can’t believe they were even arguing that f-up. Anyway, whew.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Ask yourself this question:
As the Lakers, would you rather be down 1 with the ball and 12 seconds on the clock or up 1 and they have the ball with 12 seconds left?
If it’s the first one, then you still have faith in Kobe Bryant.
You're not yet drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.

but if you’re going to say he’s not clutch, then you don’t want him to have the ball. Personally, even from a fan’s perspective, I want the ball in his hands. It’s Kobe MF Bryant. Down by Four
Hits Three pointer

Kobe takes the inbound nails baseline jumper for one point lead with 4 seconds

Jeremy Lin is why the Lakers should be giving Goudelock lots of playing time
I’m not saying he’ll go nuts but the Lakers have not even attempted to develop a young player besides Bynum for years…give it a chance. Lakers should be looking at small forward if they want to make a trade to positively impact the ability of this team to score.

you would be right...
…but I would argue Phil Jackson was not in the business of developing players as opposed to the Lakers not developing them. Everyone (including Kobe) knows that Kobe leading the league in scoring has never equalled the Lakers getting a ring.
"rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength"...Eric Hoffer
There is never time to develop
Players on the Lakers. Name the last contributor to a title contending Laker team who was developed. Partially due to having only two lottery picks in the last 20 years and generally having a superstar level on the team, the Lakers don’t have a history of letting young players play to learn how to play in the league. One could argue that only Bynum fits that model, Kobe didn’t start his first two years in the league but wasn’t considered a project either.
Byron Scott?

Started immediately, he was the 4th overall pick in the 1983 draft and he was traded for Norm Nixon. Sure, have young players stepped in (Worthy, Scott, Green) but they were not 2nd round hopefuls.
Right, but was just looking for example of player they drafted and let play
from the start. But yeah he was a very high pick, so not quite the same of players needing to develop more.
Hm maybe this will be year they have a decent draft pick again, if they finish middle of pack (very doubtful that they miss playoffs and get in lottery tho).

bogstandard purple eggplant. Not the best for making a shell to stuff with.
we roasted the eggplant to soften the flesh (which kind of worked, will leave in longer next time). sauteed garlic, cumin, onions, tomato, and some left over veggie patties. added cooked flesh, let it reduce…added bread crumbs and egg, put it back into the eggplant, layered with fresh mozz and cooked for 35 minutes.
it was really good.

alternatively
scoop out most of the flesh while raw – just leave enough flesh so walls of eggplant maintain shape
set aside shells
then roast or even boil eggplant flesh that you scooped out – mix with your spices as above or even a cooked ground meat / sausage – mix in cheese – top with bread crumbs
stuff shell and roast in oven

An argument can be made now..

I"m more speaking towards Kobain's
“message and artistic vision”, which is not really something I think of when I think of Grohl. They where/are great for different reasons.
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
if you are saying cobain created an entire genre
of this grunge alternative scene…and he helped commercialize it and make money doing it…then i can see how you could still argue that Cobain did more for music than Dave Grohl has (if you only view Dave as just a popular rock star…selling a bunch of records…but not really doing anything cutting edge musically)…
But, i think skill wise and creativity…dave is right there now with Cobain given his commercial success. I youtubed Virginia Moon with Norah Jones/Dave and was blown away at the range Dave Grohl has…to go from rocking to mellow and still having it sound great.
and they hated being associated with it, though that seemed hipsteresque.

Dave Grohl has gotten out of the “just the drummer from nirvana” shell that he started out in.
is NCIS the best show on television?
its the most popular show on TV. Nirvana and Foo Fighters where both huge, one of them just so happened to have their lead singer kill themselves. Grohl is a great musician, and nows how to make music that will get played nonstop all the time on the radio and is technically a very skilled musician. Kurt Cobain had more artistic vision. Comparing them kind of feels like comparing Batman and Spider man, they are both great, different people with different tastes will like one better then he other for totally valid reasons.
