Dodgers Spring Training 2012: Camelback Ranch Day 3

Nothing says Dodgers spring training like Manny Mota on his tricycle.

I took some pictures from day three of the Dodgers spring training camp at Camelback Ranch. It was the second day of workouts, which including the six catchers in camp stretching then playing catch with A.J. Ellis, Matt Treanor, and Matt Wallach on one side...

Clayton Kershaw worked out on Thursday with no problems from his stiff back and is expected to pitch his scheduled bullpen session on Friday. Here he is speaking with pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and manager Don Mattingly:

The pitchers split into four groups, with some working with Davey Lopes...

Quite the contrary. Coffey looks shockingly out of shape in person (speaking on an athlete standard, knowing full well about the pot calling the kettle black, etc).

well, the Leo Carrillo idea came up because I see they have available camp grounds open that weekend, so even though im sure it will be cold and not good beach weather, I thought maybe it would be a cool idea to reserve a camp site and stay the night there, since the run around 1030pm to 1230. So was thinking of going up early saturday, set up, bbq and drink beers all day, then around that time head down to the beach for some grunion run. Then afterwords, head back to the site for nice fire to warm up to. Idk, just a thought.

the leo carrillo campsite, while on the water, is in somewhat of a cove and the water is part of the port so there isn’t the typical ocean winds and stuff.

There are two beaches accessible from the campground…1 is very rocky, great surf spot and scuba too, but not sure the grunion are gonna be running on a rocky beach..2nd beach is to the north up and over a little rise…it’s beautiful and sandy but not real expansive. The grunion are gonna be more easily found on wide sand expanses (grew up in Venice/Santa Monica…those kinda beaches)

Are you interested in being

a backer for the publication of a baseball e-book titled, “The Hall of Very Good”?

The Hall of Very Good is an ebook meant to celebrate the careers of those who are not celebrated. It’s not a book meant to reopen arguments about who does and does not deserve Hall of Fame enshrinement; rather, it’s meant to remember those who, failing entrance into Cooperstown, will unfairly be lost to history. It’s for the players we grew up rooting for, the ones whose best years led to flags and memories that will fly together forever. Players like Bret Saberhagen, Will Clark, Dwight Evans, Tim Salmon, Wilbur Wood, Orel Hershiser, and literally hundreds of others.
I ponied up a few bucks to this to help ensure it happens, and to enjoy the fruits of the labor once it is published. The contributing writers (you should recognize at least some of these names, e.g., Jon Weisman) are:

To get that kind of big that Frank wants. (Huge money, keep the parking lots in Frank’s pockets), I would feel you would need a bidder who had emotional ties to the team. Depends on why they are buying the Dodgers. Do they want to own a baseball team or do they want to own a baseball team and develop the land. The prospective buyer who simply wants to own the Dodgers, could let the parking lots go. I’m wondering if MLB has the power to prevent development of the parking lot land without their approval. If so (after a couple more lawsuits), Frank would eventually have to sell if he can’t develop. I doubt the rent is the whole story.

by berkowit28 on Feb 23, 2012 6:57 PM PST up reply actions

Why would they have the power to do somehing

on land they have no jurisdiction over. That would be a City of LA issue not an MLB issue.

by bhsportsguy on Feb 23, 2012 7:16 PM PST up reply actions

From Shaikin’s newest article:

The sale agreement between McCourt and MLB specifically permits him to retain the lots — and build parking structures on them if he chooses.

But not a strip mall, restaurants, etc. Just parking structures.

Caruso/Torre are pretty definitive in their letter:

“We felt that operationally it would be impossible to effectively manage baseball operations having the parking lots that surround the stadium under separate ownership,” Caruso and Torre wrote in their letter to Rob Manfred, the MLB executive representing the league in the Dodgers’ sale.

“We believed that during the bid process we would have the opportunity to buy the lots. It has now been made clear to us by Mr. McCourt that the lots are not and will not be for sale.”

Because Frank can build parking structures right now on that land given the current zoning use. There would be many city/community/zoning commission etc. hurdles to be cleared before other kinds of development could happen.

well it says right in the beginning of that article. “When Chris Paul was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, it was done under the condition that Paul would exercise his option for 2012-2013 to give the Clippers at least two years to build a team around him. Still, there was still a feeling from skeptics that this could all go wrong”. Why the author thought it could go wrong or what he is talking about that people that it could go wrong, I have no idea…. Maybe because he hadnt officially picked the option up there was a small chance he could back out. Im not sure what Matt Moore is talking about. But maybe Phil or Mike know more.

I totally missed the Jack Johnson and 1st round pick for Jeff Carter trade today… crazy the Kings now have Richards AND Carter from last years Philly team. What are your thoughts on it?

by uschris0304 on Feb 23, 2012 7:08 PM PST reply actions

I hate to lose JJ, but

I’m really happy we got Carter. The No. 1 pick was also a little much, but at least we have a decent/+ scorer, should fit in with Richards.

Also glad we didn’t give up Bernier

by Julio Nievas on Feb 23, 2012 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

My only thing is I felt Kings needed a scoring wing, and he is listed as a center… and Kopitar and Richards are centers… so do they center 3 seperate lines, or does one of them play LW or RW?

by uschris0304 on Feb 23, 2012 7:19 PM PST up reply actions

I’m happy. They had the depth at D to lose one, and Carter is a good player. I wish the Blue Jackets had taken Bernier for Nash though.

Kings were deep at D, both with the NHL club and prospects. JJ was a terrible defender (albeit a very good offensive D). Carter fits the desperate need for a scoring forward, so on the surface it should help. Remains to be seen if Carter can be solid for the next 9 years or whatever of his contract.

Catch-22 , they need a PG but you can’t deal one of the top five PF in the league to make it happen. Fixing one hole while creating another does nothing. The advantage the Lakers currently have is their incredible length and skill at C/PF.

Just getting an incremental better PG might be enough.

Yep, but I don’t the Lakers have the assets unless they’re willing to trade either Gasol or Bynum, and they’re not. They’re just as screwed next year though since Fisher is going to pick up his player option. (That contract just makes no sense unless you just want to award a whole career.)

haha yeah I guess Parker, though Duncan is a huge part of that. If you dont have a dominate big man, you dont win…. or atleast thats always been my thinking. Not sure Parker is considered a great though, or just very good, or what. Anyways, IMO the Lakers advantage besides Kobe is the talented big men they have, so id keep that, and just go get a Sessions, and if they can get Beasley too, ok…. IMO worry about rebuilding after Kobe is gone. Rebuilding while winning titles dont happen usually, and I dont want to waste the little time Kobe has left.

Ryan Braun Case

There is a very good chance the arbitrator was wrong in his ruling and the courier did exactly what he was supposed to do under the MLB-MLBPA testing policy.

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/23/was-there-really-a-violation-of-chain-of-custody-protocol-in-the-ryan-braun-ped-case/

Braun’s argument during his January appeal in New York City was that the courier who collected his urine made a number of against-protocol moves after leaving the testing area. But were mistakes really made?

The courier did not immediately head to a FedEx Office after collecting Braun’s sample in early October because it was late on a Saturday night and he figured the store would be closed. Braun (or, rather, his lawyers) argued in January that the courier’s action was against policy, but the MLB-MLBPA joint drug agreement states that "specimens cannot be placed in a FedEx Drop Box" and the five FedEx Office locations closest to Miller Park don’t keep their doors open past 9 p.m. on Saturdays.
Also, none of the FedEx Office locations in the Milwaukee area ship items out on Sundays. So instead of handing the sealed cup of urine to a FedEx Office employee at some point Sunday and hoping for the best, the courier followed the terms of the MLB-MLBPA joint drug agreement (see pages 37-39) by storing Braun’s urine sample in a refrigerator at his residence until Monday morning, when FedEx could finally get the shipment to the appropriate testing lab in Montreal.
The MLB-MLBPA joint drug agreement fully allows for temporary storage by couriers — people who are trained and paid to handle drug test samples, and do so often — as long as the specimen can be "appropriately safeguarded," kept in a "cool and secure location," with "chain of custody intact." A refrigerator in the private residence of a trained professional would seem to fit that bill.

So if the courier is allowed to temporarily store samples on his own, and he did so in his own residence, where exactly is the chain of custody issue? And why did Das rule to have the suspension overturned?

by VegasBlues on Feb 23, 2012 9:23 PM PST reply actions

There are also some tweets from Jeff Passan which says even more about the courier and how it is common practice for them to store it at home.

by VegasBlues on Feb 23, 2012 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

but why not just schedule the tests on like, monday mid-morning? Why did they have to do a random drug test on a saturday late evening? Seems silly.

You're not yet drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.

by G.Scott on Feb 23, 2012 9:28 PM PST up reply actions

Right? THose must be Braun’s peak hours.. God only knows who much herpes medication he had on his junk

by NotJoeTorre on Feb 23, 2012 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

The test was done after their Saturday game in the playoffs (they only played one Saturday game in the playoffs). I guess it could have been scheduled for another day but this was Game 1 of the series.

by VegasBlues on Feb 23, 2012 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

To try and word this better…

The test was scheduled for Game 1 of the playoffs. It makes sense to do it that day given that it is Game 1. The breakdown in what happened seems to be with MLB. They probably should have made sure the courier had a proper place to store the sample until it could be sent out.

by VegasBlues on Feb 23, 2012 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

Oh and just so I can reply to myself multiple times…

The most important question for me is why does MLB send the samples to Montreal? Aren’t there any local laboratories in each MLB city that can handle these? I guess the lawyers bargained things this way but shipping the samples out through FedEx seems stupid to me. I wouldn’t trust FedEx to keep them stored at a proper temperature.

by VegasBlues on Feb 23, 2012 9:42 PM PST up reply actions

Do you know how many times Braun was tested last season?

by NotJoeTorre on Feb 23, 2012 9:44 PM PST up reply actions

his fridge had a grudge

by NotJoeTorre on Feb 23, 2012 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

The policy and the system is wrong then. If your system is designed with a flaw, you can’t claim that the flaw itself shows it is working.

by Tripon on Feb 23, 2012 9:31 PM PST up reply actions

Every policy ever written has flaws. When you have a bunch of lawyers on both sides arguing it is bound to.

It is possible the courier should have a separate fridge for holding such containers or a lock on his fridge (none of this will probably ever be known by people not in the appeal hearing). It is possible Braun argued that the guys personal fridge would be too cold for the results to be accurate. It’s quite possible the testing policy needs ammendment for this exact reason.

by VegasBlues on Feb 23, 2012 9:35 PM PST up reply actions

But this one seems pretty obvious. I know hindsight is 20/20, but somebody should have noticed that allowing an MLB employee to keep the material at his personal residence should have been a red flag and reconsidered.

by Tripon on Feb 23, 2012 9:39 PM PST up reply actions

Is the courier a MLB employee or does he work for a company that both MLB and MLBPA agreed to?

I don’t think the courier himself was the problem here. I think it was his actions not being what the arbitrator felt was proper even though under the rules agreed to by MLB and MLBPA said he was right in doing what he did.

It looks like those rules need more lawyers to work on them or a lot of holes can be poked in future procedures used.

by VegasBlues on Feb 23, 2012 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

The sample was collected by Comprehensive Drug Testing Inc.. It wasn’t someone who worked for MLB.

by VegasBlues on Feb 23, 2012 9:49 PM PST up reply actions

that’s a fun one for cocktail parties. “Oh I work at Comprehensive Drug Testing, Inc. We’re very comprehensive”

by Josie Becker on Feb 23, 2012 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

I also think

had it been a positive test for PED (not extremely raised level of testosterone), if you could prove that the sample wasn’t damaged or tampered with and none of the signs were present that would allow this positive to occur, then maybe the arbitrator could have looked at that and decided the other way.

But when you have a test result that according to published reports was 3X too high and higher than anyone could recall, the idea of something being done to the sample might be more plausible.

And yes, no employer themselves conduct their own drug tests.

I answered my own question on that. There are only so many labs that are World Anti-Doping Agency-certified laboratories. No way the MLBPA would have agreed to use any lab not approved by WADA. I should have thought of that prior to even asking.

Clippers/Lakers

Still a lot of basketball left to be played but interesting that headed in to the all-star break the Clippers are the #3 seed in the WC and the Lakers tied for #6. Would be something if they battled each other in the first round.

Yeah, according to this, Clippers are (very slightly) outdrawing Lakers

http://espn.go.com/nba/attendance

7 Clippers 16 308,292 19,268 101.1
8 Lakers 16 303,952 18,997 99.7

(Lakers are still slightly outdrawing Clippers on the road)

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

stubhub minimum

for clippers game is about 7.00

for lakers is $30.00

Supply and demand has to have something to do with it. Either way I will gladly take advantage of lower ticket prices.
