Dodgers Spring Training 2012: Camelback Ranch Day 3
I took some pictures from day three of the Dodgers spring training camp at Camelback Ranch. It was the second day of workouts, which including the six catchers in camp stretching then playing catch with A.J. Ellis, Matt Treanor, and Matt Wallach on one side...
...throwing to Gorman Erickson, Tim Federowicz, and Josh Bard:
Clayton Kershaw worked out on Thursday with no problems from his stiff back and is expected to pitch his scheduled bullpen session on Friday. Here he is speaking with pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and manager Don Mattingly:
The pitchers split into four groups, with some working with Davey Lopes...
...and the rest involved a series of pitcher fielding drills. Angel Guzman and Todd Coffey waiting to field grounders at first base then flip to the covering pitcher in the rotating deal:
Here's Will Ledezma...
...and Scott Rice...
...and Michael Antonini...
...and John Grabow...
...and Alberto Castillo...
...and Josh Wall...
...and finally, Todd Coffey:

Quite the contrary. Coffey looks shockingly out of shape in person (speaking on an athlete standard, knowing full well about the pot calling the kettle black, etc).

Frank. He (or his insurance) will have to pay whatever a court (whichever court) decides he’s liable for ere Stows. That judgment might force him to sell the lots in the end.
I think it would depend
on how the use of the lots is leased back to the Dodgers.

I don’t claim to know even the first thing about how these tests work, but there is a reason that these protocols exist — to ensure the viability of the tests. When that protocol gets violated, the accuracy of the tests is compromised.

OT- Curious if anyone here happens to know anything about Grunion runs? and if so, I see the 1st dates on the schedule this year is March 8-11, and just curious if Leo Carrillo is a good place for seeing them. Thanks for any info!
If you want to watch a grunion run, do it through the aquarium in Camarillo. They do a whole thing that’s fun for kids.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Leo Carrillo does a similar thing, with a movie in their auditorium and a whole setup. I’m sure both places are great.
You're not yet drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.
well, the Leo Carrillo idea came up because I see they have available camp grounds open that weekend, so even though im sure it will be cold and not good beach weather, I thought maybe it would be a cool idea to reserve a camp site and stay the night there, since the run around 1030pm to 1230. So was thinking of going up early saturday, set up, bbq and drink beers all day, then around that time head down to the beach for some grunion run. Then afterwords, head back to the site for nice fire to warm up to. Idk, just a thought.
the leo carrillo campsite, while on the water, is in somewhat of a cove and the water is part of the port so there isn’t the typical ocean winds and stuff.
I just realized this whole time I was thinking of Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. YEah, Leo Carrillo is gonna freeze your nuts off.
You're not yet drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.
There are two beaches accessible from the campground…1 is very rocky, great surf spot and scuba too, but not sure the grunion are gonna be running on a rocky beach..2nd beach is to the north up and over a little rise…it’s beautiful and sandy but not real expansive. The grunion are gonna be more easily found on wide sand expanses (grew up in Venice/Santa Monica…those kinda beaches)
"rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength"...Eric Hoffer

Are you interested in being
a backer for the publication of a baseball e-book titled, “The Hall of Very Good”?
The Hall of Very Good is an ebook meant to celebrate the careers of those who are not celebrated. It’s not a book meant to reopen arguments about who does and does not deserve Hall of Fame enshrinement; rather, it’s meant to remember those who, failing entrance into Cooperstown, will unfairly be lost to history. It’s for the players we grew up rooting for, the ones whose best years led to flags and memories that will fly together forever. Players like Bret Saberhagen, Will Clark, Dwight Evans, Tim Salmon, Wilbur Wood, Orel Hershiser, and literally hundreds of others.I ponied up a few bucks to this to help ensure it happens, and to enjoy the fruits of the labor once it is published. What is Kobe going to do while Rondo is dribbling the basketball
Also you can play off Rondo because his outside shot is shaky.
Well let's see.
1. Salaries don’t match; Gasol makes 19 million, Rondo 11 million
2. Celtics want to get younger not older
3. Ainge already said Rondo only goes for a superstar.

i think what will happen
is the Lakers will get Beasley from MIN for the Odom trade exception, get Sessions from CLE for a first round pick, and that’s it.

In other news, Claire and Torre have just dropped out of the bidding process. So according to my math, we have 9 groups left not 11 anymore.
Who are we rooting for here? Who should we root for? The one with the most money??
Kroenke, married to Walmart family (but Nuggets and Rams traditionally suck)
Owner of Memphis Grizzlies ( hey, they are paying luxury tax this year)
Magic Johnson and Guggenheim Partners
Stanley Gold and Disney Family
Some guy called Macciello or something (invests in gold mines??)
Wall st. Hedge fund guy called Cohen (carpetbagger?)
Kushner, married Donald Trump’s daughter (another carpetbagger?)

I really don’t see it as that big of a deal. I’m betting that any owner that agrees to buy the team will do so with a 10 or 20 year lease agreement for the parking lots. I don’t see them agreeing to buy the team while not already having this lease agreement in place.
tack on an extra $200mil or so for Frank.

So you don’t believe the report that he has at least one bid that is going to allow him to keep the parking lots?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Nope. I mean, its possible, but who would pay over a billion and still pay millions more as rent to Frank McCourt every year?
You’d have a much harder time making a profit out of the team if you have a parasite like Frank around sucking up revenue every year like that.
Could easily take care of that with a contract during the sale. As you said these people are not idiots.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
True. But I will laugh if Frank scares away every bidder away. It’ll be a fitting conclusion for him.
He’s going for the gold if he can get his price and keep the parking lots he wins. If he has to settle for the silver but gets his price but no parking lots he still wins.
As they said in the story they can all can back to the bidding process if Frank puts the parking lots back on the table.
Only takes one person who wants the team more then the others for him to get what he wants.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
To get that kind of big that Frank wants. (Huge money, keep the parking lots in Frank’s pockets), I would feel you would need a bidder who had emotional ties to the team. But there’s nobody like that. Steve Cohen isn’t a Dodgers fan, Magic Johnson is just the front man, and he’s a Lakers legend, not a Dodgers legend. Joe Torre just quit, and I don’t even know if he likes the Dodgers. =P
wait, we get to speculate as to the personal feelings of billionaires whom we have never met except for their public personalities and our perceptions of them?
Come on, man.
You're not yet drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.
We would have already gotten puff pieces of how much a potential owner LOVES the Dodgers if each bidder wanted to by either the L.A. Times, or another publication.
Okay, how about this. Peter O’Malley, the former owner of the Dodgers and who probably bleeds Dodger blue more than anyone here recently said that the bidding is too fucking much.
Yes, not everyone is going to be JOSH MACHICELLO, but the PR campaign has already started, and I would think these guys are savvy enough to do something like promoting any previous ties with the Dodgers, if they have any.
Peter O’Malley said it was too much money because the sale price was higher than his group was comfortable spending. no more, no less.
You're not yet drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.
But that’s my point, Peter O’Malley, a man who had extensive ties to the Dodgers, and had the CEO of Samsung as part of his group doesn’t feel he should pay a premium to owe the Dodgers again, who would?
the other bidders?
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.

It’s not the cost. It’s the potential of the land, smart investors should want the land too, wouldn’t they?
Follow @DavidYoungTBLA
- The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Depends on why they are buying the Dodgers. Do they want to own a baseball team or do they want to own a baseball team and develop the land. The prospective buyer who simply wants to own the Dodgers, could let the parking lots go. They have enough to do to improve the Stadium without worrying about capital costs to develop the other property.

I’m wondering if MLB has the power to prevent development of the parking lot land without their approval. If so (after a couple more lawsuits), Frank would eventually have to sell if he can’t develop. I doubt the rent is the whole story.
Why would they have the power to do somehing
on land they have no jurisdiction over. That would be a City of LA issue not an MLB issue.
From Shaikin’s newest article:
The sale agreement between McCourt and MLB specifically permits him to retain the lots — and build parking structures on them if he chooses.
But not a strip mall, restaurants, etc. Just parking structures.
Caruso/Torre are pretty definitive in their letter:
“We felt that operationally it would be impossible to effectively manage baseball operations having the parking lots that surround the stadium under separate ownership,” Caruso and Torre wrote in their letter to Rob Manfred, the MLB executive representing the league in the Dodgers’ sale.
“We believed that during the bid process we would have the opportunity to buy the lots. It has now been made clear to us by Mr. McCourt that the lots are not and will not be for sale.”
Because Frank can build parking structures right now on that land given the current zoning use. There would be many city/community/zoning commission etc. hurdles to be cleared before other kinds of development could happen.

The comparison is to the O.J. murder trial only, but it is flawed. O.J.‘s attorneys conjured up the idea that evidence collection was poor and possibly caused contamination, but they didn’t prove it. In Braun’s case, it appears uncontested that the idiot collector took the sample to his home refrigerator.

Kings were deep at D, both with the NHL club and prospects. JJ was a terrible defender (albeit a very good offensive D). Carter fits the desperate need for a scoring forward, so on the surface it should help. Remains to be seen if Carter can be solid for the next 9 years or whatever of his contract.

Catch-22 , they need a PG but you can’t deal one of the top five PF in the league to make it happen. Fixing one hole while creating another does nothing. The advantage the Lakers currently have is their incredible length and skill at C/PF.
Just getting an incremental better PG might be enough.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Yep, but I don’t the Lakers have the assets unless they’re willing to trade either Gasol or Bynum, and they’re not. They’re just as screwed next year though since Fisher is going to pick up his player option. (That contract just makes no sense unless you just want to award a whole career.)
They don’t need one of the best point guards in basketball they just need an upgrade. They already have three of the best players in basketball, you don’t break that up unless the return is Paul, Williams and the like.

Anyways, IMO the Lakers advantage besides Kobe is the talented big men they have, so id keep that, and just go get a Sessions, and if they can get Beasley too, ok…. IMO worry about rebuilding after Kobe is gone. Rebuilding while winning titles dont happen usually, and I dont want to waste the little time Kobe has left.
Magic never won without a dominant big man. Hell when he came back and lost in the playoffs, he said, hard to win without a big man.

last 10 starting PGs for the title winning team:
Jason Terry, Fisher, Fisher, Rondo, Parker, Jason Williams/DWade, Parker, Billups, Parker, Fisher.
Damn, the Lakers and Spurs have dominated.

Jason Terry was not the point guard.

You don’t consider Billups a great point guard in his prime?

Absolutely not
I really like him as a player, though I thought “Mr. Big Shot” as a nickname was ridiculous (like the drooling over Robert Horry, who I loved as a Laker)

After I started typing out their names, opinion changed. My head said Kidd, my fingers said Terry. It takes a good point guard who either knows his system really well or is supremely talented to win a championship, it would seem.

Jordan did it without great point guards or great centers.
Clyde Frazier had Willis Reed. West and Baylor didn’t win without Wilt, and even then, not until after Elgin retired. The 70s championship teams after the Lakers are all a blur now.

lakers won with Fisher and without healthy Bynum, so there’s that too.

He should wait for Molina to get extended or go FA
I think Martin is pretty meh nowadays, Yankee Stadium helped him out
I’m still hoping that next offseason includes Yadier and BPhillips

I actually don’t like Molina(way too emotional) but I would love having him on a 2-3 year deal. Don’t think he will sign for so few years tho
Phillips is worth for the interviews alone
that was what my

Ryan Braun Case
There is a very good chance the arbitrator was wrong in his ruling and the courier did exactly what he was supposed to do under the MLB-MLBPA testing policy.
Braun’s argument during his January appeal in New York City was that the courier who collected his urine made a number of against-protocol moves after leaving the testing area. But were mistakes really made?
The courier did not immediately head to a FedEx Office after collecting Braun’s sample in early October because it was late on a Saturday night and he figured the store would be closed. Braun (or, rather, his lawyers) argued in January that the courier’s action was against policy, but the MLB-MLBPA joint drug agreement states that "specimens cannot be placed in a FedEx Drop Box" and the five FedEx Office locations closest to Miller Park don’t keep their doors open past 9 p.m. on Saturdays.
Also, none of the FedEx Office locations in the Milwaukee area ship items out on Sundays. So instead of handing the sealed cup of urine to a FedEx Office employee at some point Sunday and hoping for the best, the courier followed the terms of the MLB-MLBPA joint drug agreement (see pages 37-39) by storing Braun’s urine sample in a refrigerator at his residence until Monday morning, when FedEx could finally get the shipment to the appropriate testing lab in Montreal.
The MLB-MLBPA joint drug agreement fully allows for temporary storage by couriers — people who are trained and paid to handle drug test samples, and do so often — as long as the specimen can be "appropriately safeguarded," kept in a "cool and secure location," with "chain of custody intact." A refrigerator in the private residence of a trained professional would seem to fit that bill.
So if the courier is allowed to temporarily store samples on his own, and he did so in his own residence, where exactly is the chain of custody issue? And why did Das rule to have the suspension overturned?
There are also some tweets from Jeff Passan which says even more about the courier and how it is common practice for them to store it at home.
but why not just schedule the tests on like, monday mid-morning? Why did they have to do a random drug test on a saturday late evening? Seems silly.

The test was done after their Saturday game in the playoffs (they only played one Saturday game in the playoffs). I guess it could have been scheduled for another day but this was Game 1 of the series.
To try and word this better…
The test was scheduled for Game 1 of the playoffs. It makes sense to do it that day given that it is Game 1. The breakdown in what happened seems to be with MLB. They probably should have made sure the courier had a proper place to store the sample until it could be sent out.
Oh and just so I can reply to myself multiple times…
The most important question for me is why does MLB send the samples to Montreal? Aren’t there any local laboratories in each MLB city that can handle these? I guess the lawyers bargained things this way but shipping the samples out through FedEx seems stupid to me. I wouldn’t trust FedEx to keep them stored at a proper temperature.
I do not.
To answer my previous question on why it was sent to Montreal.
It is a World Anti-Doping Agency-certified laboratory.
The policy and the system is wrong then. If your system is designed with a flaw, you can’t claim that the flaw itself shows it is working.
Every policy ever written has flaws. When you have a bunch of lawyers on both sides arguing it is bound to.
It is possible the courier should have a separate fridge for holding such containers or a lock on his fridge (none of this will probably ever be known by people not in the appeal hearing). It is possible Braun argued that the guys personal fridge would be too cold for the results to be accurate. It’s quite possible the testing policy needs ammendment for this exact reason.
But this one seems pretty obvious. I know hindsight is 20/20, but somebody should have noticed that allowing an MLB employee to keep the material at his personal residence should have been a red flag and reconsidered.
Is the courier a MLB employee or does he work for a company that both MLB and MLBPA agreed to?
I don’t think the courier himself was the problem here. I think it was his actions not being what the arbitrator felt was proper even though under the rules agreed to by MLB and MLBPA said he was right in doing what he did.
It looks like those rules need more lawyers to work on them or a lot of holes can be poked in future procedures used.
that’s a fun one for cocktail parties. “Oh I work at Comprehensive Drug Testing, Inc. We’re very comprehensive”

I also think
had it been a positive test for PED (not extremely raised level of testosterone), if you could prove that the sample wasn’t damaged or tampered with and none of the signs were present that would allow this positive to occur, then maybe the arbitrator could have looked at that and decided the other way.
But when you have a test result that according to published reports was 3X too high and higher than anyone could recall, the idea of something being done to the sample might be more plausible.
And yes, no employer themselves conduct their own drug tests.
I figure this is just you joking, but none of what was done at the Montreal lab was brought into question here.
That was a joke, but I do wonder why MLB didn’t contract with a local lab in each MLB city. Getting it shipped to Montreal seems odd.
Clippers/Lakers
Still a lot of basketball left to be played but interesting that headed in to the all-star break the Clippers are the #3 seed in the WC and the Lakers tied for #6. Would be something if they battled each other in the first round.
Heard the clippers still aren’t selling out games

Yeah, according to this, Clippers are (very slightly) outdrawing Lakers
http://espn.go.com/nba/attendance
7 Clippers 16 308,292 19,268 101.1
8 Lakers 16 303,952 18,997 99.7
(Lakers are still slightly outdrawing Clippers on the road)
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
stubhub minimum
for clippers game is about 7.00
for lakers is $30.00
Supply and demand has to have something to do with it. Either way I will gladly take advantage of lower ticket prices.
