Super Bowl Open Thread
While we are on the threshold of starting spring training, apparently the NFL has something going on today in which Madonna is involved.

Why must the halftime show always be an old, classic artist why past their prime?
Why not just an actually good current band? Black Keys, etc?
@TElciram
But comically bad actual value.

Look at the dustup when Arcade Fire won at the Grammys a few years back. 99% of people who pay attention to the Grammys said, “Who?!”
And that is the Grammys. The Super Bowl captures a much larger audience.
Still chasing the dream of mediocrity
Except that Arcade Fire sucks and isn't even a diamond in the rough type low popularity band.

When the Black Keys won for "Tighten Up" last year
Everyone i know that saw it was just like “FINALLY”. They’ve been good forever.

You need Proven Veteran Leadership™ to play halftime in the Superbowl.

I can’t believe they don’t just have the Foo Fighters play. Classic rock style and they have actually made good music in the last decade.
Another great choice.
They’d, you know, be good.

The Super Bowl gave the halftime show to Up With People for years and years and years.
Still chasing the dream of mediocrity
do you think the people who make these decisions can tell the difference when talking about modern popular music?

Not a good start for Brady.
Nor for Al Michaels, who seemed unaware that intentional grounding in end zone=safety ’til after the call.

really?
I’m not stretching at all. She’s clearly talking about sex. So it doesn’t really take much textual digging to translate it to “buy women flowers and they’ll have sex with you.”
I didnt take it as in give any woman flowers and she’ll sleep with you, but more so for men in relationships, which IMO, is mostly true.
bullshit, both the statement above, and the commercial. I totally side with court on this one.

Really
Can’t everyone lighten up? Dave posts pics of T&A and people make jokes loaded with sexual innuendo all the time, and now we have this prudish morality session?

There is a difference between joking around amongst friends and national commercial spots. It’s not a “morality session” to notice that the commercial’s essential message is that women can be bought for sex, if you use teleflora.

Since too many men on the field is just five yards and they don’t reset the clock, why wouldn’t the Giants throw like 30 dudes out there for that last hail mary?
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
according to my brother, the game can’t end on a penalty. but that doesn’t answer why the Giants didn’t do that for the several other hail mary plays before the last one.
If it was obvious, Patriots would have just spiked the ball.
by dodgerpreacher on Feb 5, 2012 7:45 PM PST up reply actions
I thought the same thing but eventually they would have to do it with 11 men since a game cannot end on a defensive penalty and eventually they’d start getting called for 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct for being assholes.
game cant end on a defensive penalty
So the last play of the game would have to be played straight up with 11 players.
Its probably a good idea to run extra guys when there’s like 25 seconds left and the other team needs to go 75 yards…only way they can do that is to hit a big pass…but you’d need to be sneaky about it so the QB doesnt see it and just spike the ball, only have 1 second run off, and get 5 yards.

I did enjoy in the lead up to the super bowl
seeing people argue both that the giants had a weak schedule so would lose, and that the pats had had a weak schedule, so they would lose.

IF IT DOESN’T HAVE ONE OF A HANDFUL OF FRANCHISES THAT I LOVE.

I’m just mad ’cause the random numbers that were assigned to me were not the same as the random numbers in the points the teams scored!
Still chasing the dream of mediocrity
I didn't think it was a very good game
just a close game….a lot of errors by the Pats, Giants were solid and steady, fortunate to recover the fumbles. I hate the Giants but I have to give Eli his props, he makes great throws in 4th quarters to beat the Patriots in Super Bowls. It’s what he does.

Rockies get Jeremy Guthrie for Matt Lindstrom and Jason Hammel.
It’s a minor upgrade but Guthrie in Coors could get real ugly. I guess the Orioles get a guy that’s like a worse Guthrie with an extra year of control.
