Jerry Hairston Jr. Battling Shoulder Inflammation

Jerry Hairston Jr. had had trouble making throws this spring, but thinks he found the root of the problem on Saturday.

Jerry Hairston Jr., who has struggled so far this spring with five throwing errors in just 40 innings in the field, was diagnosed on Saturday with right shoulder inflammation. Hairston was examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Saturday, and given anti-inflammatory medication. Hairston is listed as day-to-day, though he said he could play on Sunday.

Hairston jammed his right shoulder while with the Milwaukee Brewers on a slide into first base in Game 6 of the NLCS last year against the St. Louis Cardinals:

He came to camp having trouble getting his arm past a certain point while throwing, though he wasn't in pain and didn't tell anyone of his injury. "Each day I felt better and better while throwing," said Hairston. "After yesterday, I had to say something."

Yesterday was in Tucson, when Hairston bounced a throw home from third base for his fifth error of the spring, which prompted Mattingly to approach his utility man about his throwing issues. "Before we start trying to address making sure the feet are working right and the arm action is good, we wanted to make sure he was physically healthy first," Mattingly said.

Hairston is the Dodgers primary backup this season at second and third base, and could play the outfield on occasion as well. Keeping him healthy is a priority, which might mean some extra checking up on him as Hairston said he played for a month on a fractured tibia without telling anyone in 2010 while with the San Diego Padres.

False Alarm For Capuano

It looked like another former Brewer might haven been hurt today, but Chris Capuano was just fine. Capuano, making his fourth start of the spring, allowed two runs on six hits in his five innings, walking two while striking out five in the Dodgers' 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians, but had a bit of scare in the top of the fourth.

Capuano landed funny and caught his spike on a pitch delivery, and felt a slight grabbing sensation in his right hamstring. Pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and trainer Sue Falsone came to the mound and Capuano threw a warmup pitch, but he didn't feel anything during the warmup or any time after that.

As for the game itself, Capuano said he had better command of his changeup on Saturday, specifically on a few full counts. But the pitcher also said he would like to build up his stamina over the last week and a half of spring training.

"I was noticeably tired in the last inning. The ball was up and I was missing my spots," Capuano said. "Conditioning wise I still need to get that pitch count up there. The first four innings I felt great."

Roster Moves

After the game, the Dodgers reassigned pitchers Angel Guzman, Wil Ledezma, and Fernando Nieve to minor league camp. There are 41 players remaining in major league camp, including 19 pitchers and 22 position players.

Up Next

The Dodgers head to Maryvale Sunday to face the Milwaukee Brewers, with Clayton Kershaw making his fourth Cactus League start. Shawn Marcum gets the start for Milwaukee.
