Vin Scully Home Sick For Dodgers Home Opener

Vin Scully will miss his first home opener in 35 years today.

The good news and warm feelings that come with a home opener at Dodger Stadium are dampened a bit on Tuesday, as Vin Scully will not call today's game. Scully is resting at home with a bad cold, and will miss just his second home opener in 63 seasons calling Dodgers games.

The only other home opener missed by Scully was 1977, when he was in Augusta calling the Masters for CBS.

Charley Steiner and Steve Lyons will call today's game for Prime Ticket. Rick Monday will call the game on radio for AM 570 and the Dodger Radio Network.

Loney Struggling

James Loney is off to a cold start to his season, as he is 0-for-12 with a walk through three games. But manager Don Mattingly is not concerned with his first baseman.

"Right now I feel he's swinging the bat alright. The way he looked in spring training is the same way he looks now and the same way he looked at the end of last year," Mattingly said. "He has hit some balls on the nose. He hasn't crushed anything to the gap or anything, but he has hit some balls square. I still feel good about James."

Loney hit .320/.380/.534 after the All-Star break last year when he essentially stopped tinkering with his swing, something that has been a habit of Loney's in the past, and something that Mattingly and the coaching staff is well aware of.

"My biggest concern right now with James is that he starts panicking and trying to do something different," Mattingly said. "Next thing you know he's got a toe tap or his hands or lower or he's wide open and spread out, things like that. That's our job, to keep James on track."

Gamer, Meet Gomer

Today is the third consecutive home opener started by Clayton Kershaw. The only other Los Angeles Dodger to start that many home openers in a row was Claude Osteen, who started six straight Dodger Stadium openers from 1965-1970.

Kershaw has also won his last 11 decisions in Dodger Stadium, one win away from matching the longest home winning streak since the Dodgers moves to Los Angeles. Ed Roebuck won 12 straight from 1960-1962, and Orel Hershiser did the same in 1984-1985.

Kevin Correia starts for the Pirates.
