Three of the Dodgers top pitching prospects threw on Sunday, and all of them had varying degrees of success. Overall the minor league teams won 3 out of 5 games, including the Quakes splitting their double header.
Minor League Player of the Day – Scott Schebler - 3 for 4, 1 HR, 1 2B, 2 Runs, 1 RBI. Scott started off the season in a bit of a slump, but over the past three games he's really turned it on and has 7 hits, including a homer, 2 doubles, and 2 triples. Good to see some offense finally coming from the Loons lineup.
AAA – The Isotopes used a pair of big innings and a solid start by Mike Parisi to down the Storm Chasers (Royals) 9 to 7. Parsi allowed just 1 run over 5 innings and left the contest with a 4 - 1 lead, but his supposed reliever, Francisco Felix, let Omaha back in the game by giving up 6 runs in less than two frames. The Topes' offense was able to fight back, however, and that allowed Will Savage to pick up the win and Josh Wall to record the save after they threw a combined 2.1 shutout innings. The Albuquerque offense was paced by an unlikely source as catcher Josh Bard went 4 for 4 with a double and a RBI. Josh Fields had a big triple that drove in 2 runs, while Jerry Sands and Scott Van Slyke both had two hits and a RBI.
AA – The Lookouts scored two early runs, but were unable to hold the lead as the Birmingham Barons (White Sox) defeated Chattanooga 4 to 3. Allen Webster started the game for the Lookouts and had an OK outing despite recording the loss as he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7 over 6 innings. Jon Michael Redding threw the final 3 frames and did very well, giving up just a single hit while punching out 3. Chattanooga's offensive outburst in the first started with a leadoff double by Brian Cavazos-Galvez, and ended with JT Wise's 2nd homer of the season. The only other notable base knock was a double by Jake Lemmerman.
HiA Game 1 – The Quakes started off their day on the right foot as they picked up a 4 - 3 win over the Visalia Rawhide (Dbacks) in the first game of their double header. Rancho only had 5 hits in the 7 inning game, but 3 went for extra bases including a 2-RBI double by catcher Michael Pericht. Casio Grider and Charlie Mirabal had the other 2-baggers for the Quakes, while Jonathan Garcia singled, had a sac fly, and recorded an outfield assist from right field. Starter Angel Sanchez wasn't overly dominant as he allowed 8 base-runners over 5 innings (5 hits and 3 walks) and struck out just 3, but only 3 runs scored against him and he got the win. Steve Smith was solid in relief as he threw the final two frames and picked up the save by allowing just a single hit.
HiA Game 2 – Not a whole lot to write about here as the Quakes were shutout 2 to 0 by the Rawhide in the nightcap of the double header. The offense managed just 3 hits, all singles, and nobody had more than one base knock. The one notable thing about this game was that Zach Lee started for Rancho and had another solid outing despite the loss as he allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk over 5 frames while striking out a season high 7 batters. He did get tagged for a homer, however, and in total gave up 2 runs.
LoA – Lead-off man Devin Shines made his dad/coach proud on Sunday as his 3-run homer in the 7th inning proved to be the game winner in a 6 - 5 Loons victory over the TinCaps (Padres). The offense was also led by Scott Schebler who continued his hot streak with 3 more hits, including a double and his first bomb of the year. Jessie Bosnik also had 3 hits, while Noel Cuevas drove in a pair of runs. Great Lakes starter Arismendy Ozoria got hit around a bit in his 4 innings of work as he gave up 4 runs on 5 hits, but reliever Jose Dominguez was outstanding in relief as he allowed just a single hit over 4.1 frames while striking out 4. Eric Eadington notched his first save of the year by getting the final 2 outs of the game.
Coming up – Another full slate of games, starting with a day game for the Isotopes with Michael Antonini on the mound. Ethan Martin will throw for the Lookouts, while Jarret Martin (no relation) will start for the Loons. The highlight of the night will probably be Chris Reed who will be the starter for the Quakes.
Minor League Transactions - HiA: Chris Jacobs was activated from the DL and RHP Steve Smith was added to the team, while C.J. Retherford and pitcher PJ Zocchi were both removed from the roster.
