Hairston, Wright Help Preserve Dodgers Win In Milwaukee

Jerry Hairston Jr. terrorized his ex-mates with the glove late in Thursday's Dodgers win.

The Dodgers played their fourth straight one-run game on Thursday and sixth of their last seven contests, and made sure this time to come out on the right side in Milwaukee, beating the Brewers 4-3 in the finale at Miller Park. The Dodgers have never been swept by the Brewers in 31 series dating back to 1998.

Aaron Harang allowed three straight singles to begin the bottom of the second inning, an inning in which the Brewers scored two runs. But Harang recovered to retire 11 of his next 13 batters, before allowing a third run in the sixth inning.

The Dodgers trailed 2-1 after that second inning, but rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, the second run coming on an Andre Ethier RBI single. That briefly gave Ethier sole possession of the MLB RBI lead until Matt Kemp tied him two innings later with a solo home run to right field, his seventh of the season.

Jamey Wright was thrust into high leverage duty on Thursday with a 4-3 lead, and proceeded to strikeout all three batters he faced in the seventh inning. Wright went back out for the eighth and after his two-out walk ended up on third base after a stolen base and a throwing error, Alex Gonzalez lined a ball that looked like a sure extra-base hit down the third base line.

But Jerry Hairston Jr. made a fantastic diving stop and one hop throw to James Loney at first to end the inning and preserve the lead. Hairston then opened the ninth with a fantastic play to rob Travis Ishikawa of a bunt single.

Javy Guerra stuck out the final two batters for his sixth save of the season.

Uribe Out

Juan Uribe was held out of the lineup for a second straight day on Thursday with a left wrist injury that will cause him to see a specialist Friday in Houston, per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com. "They said he can play defense but not bat," manager Don Mattingly told reporters before the game, in a quote that really applies to Uribe's entire tenure as a Dodger, injured or not.

Notes

  • Matt Treanor drove in the Dodgers' first run with a sacrifice fly, then tripled to lead off the fourth inning (he was promptly stranded at third). That was the fourth triple of his career.
  • Dee Gordon was caught stealing for the second time this season
  • Ethier had two hits on the day, including a double, and is 6-for-17 against left-handed pitchers this season.

Up Next

The Dodgers move on to Houston for three against the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Ted Lilly, who has yet to allow an earned run this season, starts for the Dodgers in the opener Friday night. The Dodgers will face a left-handed starter for the second straight game, as J.A. Happ gets the call for Houston.
