Dodgers 4/25/12 Minor League Report - BCG Breaks out of Slump in a Big Way

Nathan Eovaldi threw just 1 inning for the Lookouts on Wednesday and it appears he'll be heading to LA soon

Minor League Player of the DayBrian Cavazos-Galvez - 3 for 6, 2 HR's, 3 Runs, 4 RBI's. Jose Dominguez also made a strong case for this award, but I decided to give it to BCG because he had a pair of homers and also started the winning rally in the 12th inning with a single. Brian was in a terrible slump coming into Wednesday and even after his big day is hitting just .185, so hopefully his big day will jump-start his bat.

AAA – Off day

AA – The Lookouts and BayBears battled it out for exactly 4 hours on Wednesday, and when the dust settled it was Chattanooga who had come away with a 8 to 7 victory over Mobile (Dbacks) in 12 innings. The game started off on an interesting note as Nathan Eovaldi was removed after just 1 inning for the second start in a row, and as Eric has already mentioned the rumor is that he'll be joining LA soon. Chris Withrow pitched the next 5.2 frames and was strong early, but he tired in the 7th and in total allowed 5 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks (although he did punch out 6). Once the game went into extras it was Steven Ames who shutout the opposition for 2 frames, but then things looked grim for Chattanooga when Luis Vasquez walked 4 and gave up a pair of runs in the top of the 12th. Luckily his offense was able to bail him out as the Lookouts scored 3 in the bottom of the 12th to walk off with the victory. The actual sequence of the winning rally wasn't all that exciting as the 3 final runs scored on a bases loaded HBP, a sac fly, and a ground out, but the one thing worth noting is that the pinch hitter who got hit by the pitch to drive in the run was Aaron Miller. It should also be noted that Brian Cavazos-Galvez, who had been stuck in an 0 for 24 funk, finally broke out with a pair of homers and drove in 4 runs. Blake Smith also went deep for the 3rd time this season.

HiA – Not a whole lot of positive news in this game as the Quakes fell to the JetHawks (Astros) for the 3rd game in a row. Rancho started the game with a pair of rehabbing relievers as Todd Coffey pitched the first inning and Ronald Belisario threw in the 2nd. Both big leaguers allowed a run and neither recorded a strikeout. Angel Sanchez picked up in the 4th after Steve Smith hurled a perfect inning, but he had another tough outing as he gave up 6 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and did not strike out a batter in his 3 innings of work. The Quake spread their offense around pretty evenly as 7 of the 9 batters in the lineup had a hit, but nobody had more than 1. Chris O'Brien hit his first homer of the year, while CJ Retherford and Alexis Aguilar doubled. It should also be noted that Jarrad Page collected his first hit as a professional baseball player, but was also thrown out in his first stolen base attempt.

LoA – The Loons' pitching staff had an outstanding day on Wednesday as Great Lakes cruised to a 3 - 1 win over the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners). Starter Arismendy Ozoria put together his second strong outing in a row by giving up just 3 hits and 1 unearned run over 5 frames. Jose Dominguez was even better in relief as he finished the game with 4 hitless innings and struck out 4. As the main long reliever for the Loons this season, Dominguez has allowed just 8 hits in 15.2 innings for a batting average against of just .145. At the plate it was Devin Shines who had the big hit as he crushed his 3rd homer of the season. Scott Schebler also drove in a run, while Jose Arredondo continued the strong start to his season by collecting a single and a double in 4 at bats.

Coming up – All eyes will be on Zach Lee as he makes his first start in the hitter's haven known as Lancaster. The Lookouts game should also be quite interesting as Allen Webster will be going up against the 2011 3rd overall pick in Trevor Bauer. The Isotopes will send Fernando Nieve to the mound, while the Loons will go with Jarret Martin, who has been a strikeout machine so far this season.
