Dodgers 4/28/12 Minor League Report - Gould Shines Bright Despite Quakes' Loss

Minor League Player of the DayGarrett Gould - 6 IP, 12 K's, 4 Hits, 1 Run, 0 Walks. With yet another big strikeout game, Gould boosted his K/9 to 16.1 for the season which is ridiculous for a starting pitcher. I have yet to see Gould pitch this season, but I can only guess that his curveball, which has been rated as plus-plus, is responsible for most of these K's.

AAA – The Isotopes battled for 12 innings on Saturday and eventually defeated the Zephyrs (Marlins) 4 - 3 to capture the only victory among Dodger minor league affiliates. Luis Cruz is the one who delivered the game winning double in the 12th, and that was one of just two extra base hits for the Topes (the other was a two-bagger by Josh Bard). Jerry Sands, Elian Herrera, Matt Angle, and Joe Becker all had two singles, with Becker and Herrera collecting an RBI each. On the mound starter Will Savage had another solid outing as he allowed just 3 hits over 6 frames, giving up 2 runs in the process. Scott Rice permitted the trying run in the 8th, but after that the bullpen really stepped up as the surprising Derrick Loop struck out 4 in 3 innings of 1-hit ball while Josh Wall picked up his 5th save with a perfect frame.

AA – The Lookouts lost to the BayBears (Dbacks) for the 3rd game in a row on Saturday in a 7 - 6 defeat. Starter Aaron Miller allowed all 7 runs on 10 hits over 5.2 frames, and struck out just 1 as his ERA increased to 5.96. Red Patterson, Luis Vasquez, and Shawn Tolleson finished the game with 3.1 hitless frames, although Tolleson uncharacteristically walked 2 batters to go along with his 2 K's. On offense it was Blake Smith who led the way with 2 hits and 2 RBI's, while Rafael Ynoa went 2 for 5 with a pair of stolen bases. The only other offensive highlights were doubles by Jake Lemmerman, JT Wise, Pedro Baez, and Austin Jackson.

HiA Garrett Gould had a career game on Saturday, but the rest of the Quakes team fell flat as Rancho lost to the Storm (Padres) 4 to 1. Gould, who took over for "starter" Ronald Belisario in the 3rd inning, struck out 12 in 6 innings without allowing a walk, and gave up just 1 run on 4 hits. Unfortunately the Lake Elsinore starter, Burch Smith, was even better as he gave up just 1 hit in 7.2 frames while K'ing 13. Gould's predecessor, Belisario, had already given up 3 runs to score when Garrett entered the game, so when you combined that with the Quakes terrible offense you can see why Rancho never really had a chance to win this game. As at team the Quakes had just 2 hits, with Tyler Henson's double counting as the only highlight.

LoA – Loons starter Matt Laney gave up 3 first inning runs, and even though he was excellent for the remainder of the day Great Lakes was not able to overcome the early deficit and lost to the Kane County Cougars (Royals) 3 to 2. Laney ended up throwing 7 frames and did not allow a hit after the 2nd inning, but the early damage was enough to saddle him with the loss. Reliever Juan Noriega extended his scoreless streak to 31 innings with 2 more shutout innings, and in watching him throw for the first time I can say that he looks a bit taller than his listed hight of 5'7". On offense the Loons had a solid game as they outhit the Cougars 13 to 4, but they failed to get the big hits in the clutch which is why they ended up with the loss. Jose Arredondo increased hit batting average to .343 with 3 more hits, and catcher Jan Vazquez also had 3 singles. Devin Shines went 2 for 5 with an RBI, while Joe WInker also drove in a run with the only extra base hit of the game; a double.

Coming upMatt Magill's start for the Lookouts will be the highlight on day that's relatively light on top pitching prospects. Andres Santiago will take his solid 3.06 ERA to the mound for the Quakes, while Stephen Fife and Gustavo Gomez will throw for the Isotopes and Loons, respectively.

Minor League Transactions - AAA: Matt Angle was activated from the disabled list while Lance Zawadzki was placed on the DL with an oblique strain
