Dodgers Week 4 In Review: Jawdropping

Saturday night was quite a party at Dodger Stadium.

Runs were at a premium at Dodger Stadium this week, and the Dodgers rode great starting pitching and timely hitting to four wins against a pair of playoff contenders from the National League East in the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals. They ended the week at 16-6, tied for the best record in baseball.

Javy Guerra had a rough week with three bad games plus a line drive off his face, and allowed five runs in two innings. Every one else on the staff allowed 10 runs in 53 innings.

Saturday night saw the best game of the year to date, with two superb pitching performances, the major league debut of a future superstar, and was capped by a Matt Kemp walk-off, complete with an "M-V-P" serenade from a packed Dodger Stadium.

Dodger Batter of the Week: Two home runs and a .350 average qualifies as the worst week of the season for Matt Kemp, who splits this week's award with Juan Uribe, who had a four-hit game and a pair of key doubles in wins on Friday and Saturday.

Dodger Pitcher of the Week: The entire starting staff was superb, and this award goes to Chris Capuano, who had two excellent starts. Capuano allowed one run in two starts, and had 14 strikeouts.

Week 4 Record: 4-2
21 runs scored (3.50 per game)
15 runs allowed (2.50 per game)
.649 pythagorean winning percentage

Season Record: 16-6
89 runs scored (4.05 per game)
73 runs allowed (3.32 per game)
.590 pythagorean winning percentage (13-9)

30/30 Watch: Matt Kemp had two home runs and one stolen base against the Braves and Nationals this week, and has 11 homers and two steals in 22 games. Kemp is on pace for 81 home runs and 15 steals this season.

Uribe Run Watch: Juan Uribe went 11 games and 44 plate appearances without scoring a run, but then scored in his first plate appearances on Tuesday in his four-hit game.

Quality Is Job One: Dodgers starting pitchers had six quality starts in six games and combined for a 1.73 ERA and a tick under seven innings per start.

Transactions:

  • Tuesday: The Dodgers placed Matt Guerrier on the disabled list with right elbow tendonitis, retroactive to April 19, and recalled Michael Antonini from Triple A Albuquerque.
  • Friday: The Dodgers optioned Michael Antonini back to Triple A before he threw a major league pitch, and recalled Nathan Eovaldi from Double A Chattanooga.
  • Sunday: After the game with Washington, the Dodgers optioned Eovaldi, who didn't get a chance to pitch during the weekend, back to Double A.

Game Results:

Upcoming Week: The Dodgers hit the road next week to run the Eric Young Gauntlet, facing the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs.
