Dodgers 5/14/12 Minor League Report - Sands Strikes Again; Eovaldi Excellent

LOS ANGELES, CA - SEPTEMBER 17: Justin Sellers #12 and Jerry Sands #47 of the Los Angeles Dodgers congratulate each other following their teams 6-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Dodger Stadium on September 17, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

Minor League Player of the DayJerry Sands - 3 for 3, 1 HR, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 2 Runs. This was a toss up between Sands and Eovaldi, but I'm giving it to Jerry again to celebrate his promotion to the big leagues.

AAA Jerry Sands put on another show in his AAA finale, but the Isotopes still lost to the Bees (Angels) 3 to 2. Sands went 3 for 3 with a homer and a double, giving him 6 hits and 3 bombs over the last two games. Let's hope he can keep some of the momentum as he joins LA. Nobody else did anything of note at the plate, while starting pitcher Stephen Fife had a decent game as he allowed 3 runs (2 earned) over 7 frames in the loss. Shawn Tolleson pitched in relief and was much better in his second AAA appearance, allowing just one hit and recording 1 K in his inning of work.

AA – Nathan Eovaldi pitched a gem on Monday as the Lookouts held off the BayBears (Dbacks) 3 to 1. Eovaldi gave up just 3 hits over 7 strong innings, allowing the only run to score against him on a solo homer. He walked 3 and struck out 4. Logam Bawcom was very impressive in his 2 hitless innings of relief work as he K'ed 2 to pick up his 1st save in AA. Chattanooga had 11 hits in the win, and was led by Pedro Baez who went 2 for 4 with a double, a triple, and 2 RBI's. JT Wise connected on a pair of doubles, while Griff Erickson went 2 for 3 with a two-bagger of his own.

HiA Jon Michael Redding joined Fife and Eovaldi in throwing exactly 7 innings, and was also impressive in the Quakes 5 - 1 win over Lancaster (Astros). Redding, who continues to fill in for the injury Chris Reed, allowed just 1 run, also on a solo homer, and walked just 1 while striking out 4. Steve Smith fired 2 hitless innings of relief for his 2nd save of the year. The Rancho offense was spread among almost everyone in the lineup as 8 of the 9 starters recorded at least 1 hit. Austin Gallagher went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles, while Brian Cavazos-Galvez hit his 3rd HiA homer of the year. Leon Landry had an RBI double while Chris Jacobs went 2 for 4.

LoA – Great Lakes committed 4 errors on Monday and the 3 unearned runs that resulted were the difference in the game as the Loons lost to the Captains (Indians) 6 to 3. Starter Ryan O'Sullivan allowed all 6 runs over his 6 innings of work, but as I already mentioned 3 were unearned. Matt Laney tossed the final 2 frames and allowed just a single hit. There wasn't a whole lot of excitement on offense, although Kevin Taylor, Joe Winker, and Pedro Guerrero all had multi-hit games. Noel Cuevas drove in 2 of 3 runs with a triple, and O'Koyea Dickson had a sac fly but was otherwise held hitless.

Coming upGustavo Gomez takes the mound for the Loons in a game that has already started, while John Ely and the Isotopes also play a day game. Garrett Gould starts for the Quakes, and the Lookout pitcher will most likely be Ethan Martin.

Minor League Transactions – We should see some moves today to make up for the promotions of Jerry Sands and Elian Herrera.
