Dodgers Week 5 In Review: Road Woes

It was a tough week for Don Mattingly and the Dodgers.

The Dodgers were two outs away from a .500 road trip on Sunday, but a blown save later highlighted what was a bad week for the bullpen. Dodgers relievers gave up 12 runs in 14 1/3 innings during the week, and allowed 36 baserunners while recording only 43 outs.

The Dodgers ended their week 2-4, and are 8-8 on the road this season.

Dodger Batter of the Week: His week was cut short on Sunday with a strained left hamstring, but Jerry Hairston Jr. still but up quite a week. Hairston hit .375 with a home run, triple, and double, and fell a double shy of the cycle on Friday in Chicago. Honorable mention goes to A.J. Ellis, who hit his second home run and had a .450 on-base percentage.

Dodger Pitcher of the Week: For the second consecutive week, Chris Capuano wins the weekly honor, thanks to his seven shutout innings at Wrigley Field on Saturday. Capuano improved to 4-0 on the season, and his 18 2/3 scoreless inning streak has dropped his ERA down to 2.21.

Week 5 Record: 2-4
26 runs scored (4.33 per game)
30 runs allowed (5.00 per game)
.435 pythagorean winning percentage

Season Record: 18-10
115 runs scored (4.11 per game)
103 runs allowed (3.68 per game)
.550 pythagorean winning percentage (15-13)

30/30 Watch: Matt Kemp had one home runs and no stolen bases against the Rockies and Cubs this week, and has 12 homers and two steals in 28 games. Kemp is on pace for 69 home runs and 12 steals this season.

Welcome Back: After missing all of 2011 with visa issues and after missing the first 25 games of 2012 for violating baseball's drug policy, Ronald Belisario pitched for the Dodgers in a major league game, throwing a scoreless inning on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. It was the first appearance on a major league mound for Belisario since October 1, 2010.

Club 1,000: On Friday, Chad Billingsley became the 19th Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher to throw 1,000 innings as a starter. One day later teammate Chris Capuano, who has undergone two Tommy John surgeries, surpassed the 1,000-inning plateau for his career.

I Remember You: In the sixth inning on Tuesday in Colorado, Ted Lilly allowed a home run to Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies. That snapped a string of 265 batters and 68 innings, including eight full starts, in which Lilly did not allow a home run. Before Gonzalez, the last man to hit a home run off Lilly was...Gonzalez, on August 26, 2011 at Dodger Stadium.

A Memorable First: On Tuesday in Colorado, Dee Gordon led off the game with a line drive home run off the facing of the second deck in right field off Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin, the first major league home run for Gordon. Before Tuesday, Chacin had allowed one home run in 64 career innings against the Dodgers, but he allowed three long balls on Tuesday and was optioned to Triple A Colorado Springs after the game.

Transactions:

  • Monday: Before their series opener in Colorado, relief pitcher Todd Coffey was activated from the disabled list.
  • Thursday: After serving his 25-game suspension, relief pitcher Ronald Belisario was activated from the restricted list. To make room on the roster, relief pitcher Mike MacDougal was designated for assignment.
  • Friday: One week after getting released by the Angels, Bobby Abreu signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers. To make room on the active roster, infielder Justin Sellers was optioned to Triple A Albuquerque.

Game Results:

Upcoming Week: The Dodgers return home to open an eight-game homestand, and run the Kirt Manwaring Gauntlet by hosting the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies.
