Dodgers Rally Again, Then Go Quiet In Loss To White Sox

Dee Gordon was dismayed at the lack of offense after the third inning.

Saturday's game at Dodger Stadium featured a combined 27 runners reach base via hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch, but not a single run was scored after the fourth inning. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, it was the White Sox who scored that final run in the fourth inning, and it led to a 5-4 Chicago win.

After the Dodgers couldn't cash in a first-and-third situation with one out in the bottom of the first inning, the White Sox put runners at first and third to open the top of the second. Chad Billingsley got A.J. Pierzynski to strike out, but Alex Rios stole second base, which allowed the bloop single in short left field by Alexei Ramirez to score two runs. Later in the inning, the White Sox scored a third run off Billingsley when Philip Humber singled in Ramirez for his first major league hit.

The Dodger deficit swelled to 4-0 in the top of the third when Alex Rios tripled off the wall in center field, a ball on which Elian Herrera mistimed his jump.

The Dodgers bunched together six singles in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 4-4, but a hit-by-pitch, stolen base, and fielding error in the top of the fourth gave the Sox another run to regain the lead.

Billingsley rebounded to pitch scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth innings, but the damage had already been done. Five runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits meant Billingsley got hung with his fifth loss of the season.

The Dodgers left a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning, and pinch runner Tony Gwynn Jr. was thrown out trying to steal second base to get into scoring position to end the eighth. The Dodgers had one hit after their third inning rally.

Hawksworth Closer To Return

Relief pitcher Blake Hawksworth, who hasn't pitched all season after undergoing two elbow surgeries in January, threw a simulated game earlier this week at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona, and is scheduled to throw another one in the next few days. Manager Don Mattingly said on Saturday that if all goes well Hawksworth would likely begin a rehab assignment with Class A Rancho Cucamonga late next week.

Hawksworth is currently on the 60-day disabled list and with a full 40-man roster, the Dodgers would have to make a corresponding 40-man roster move in order to activate the right-hander.

Notes

  • Billingsley had two hits at the plate on Saturday, the second time this season he has done so. he is the only Dodgers pitcher this season to have two hits in a game.
  • Andre Ethier went 2-for-3 with a walk on Saturday, and is hitting .429/.500/.500 since signing his five-year contract extension.
  • The three stolen bases by the White Sox tied a season high against the Dodgers, the fifth time it has happened this season. Chicago was also caught twice trying to steal, and their five stolen base attempts are a new season high against the Dodgers.
