Minor League Player of the Day – Kyle Russell - 3 for 5, 1 2B, 1 RBI. No real standouts on Sunday so I'm giving the award to Russell whose 3 hits were the most of any player on the day. Russell hasn't done a whole lot this season, but over his last 10 days he does have 4 homers and 1.039 OPS.
AAA – After winning the first 3 games of the series against Iowa, the Isotopes finally lost to the Cubs 3 to 2 on Sunday afternoon. Albuquerque took the early lead as they scored a pair of 1st inning runs, but after that the offense wouldn't be heard from again. Trent Oeltjen went 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base, while Alex Castellanos also had 2 hits including an RBI triple. Scott Van Slyke singled twice, but Jerry Sands had a rough game as struck out in all 4 of his at bats. Michael Antonini was solid on the mound as he gave up just 1 score in 5.2 innings, but Derrick Loop allowed his first two runs since May 28th and got tagged with the loss.
AA – Chris Reed finally gave up his first hits and runs while in AA as the Lookouts lost to the Generals (Mariners) 7 - 5 in the final game of the first half. For the 3rd start in a row Reed tossed exactly 3 innings, but in this outing he allowed 4 hits and 2 runs. The lefty cruised through the first two frames, and it was in the 3rd that he ran into trouble. Wes Roemer threw the final 5 innings of the game and gave up the other 5 runs, but none of the runs were earned thanks to fielding errors by Jake Lemmerman and Travis Denker. At the plate Kyle Russell led the way with 3 hits including a two-bagger and a RBI, while J.T. Wise and Blake Smith both had a double and a single.
HiA – All Star Break
LoA – The Loons fell in their first half finale, 9 - 2 to the Lugnuts (Blue Jays). Things got out of hand early when starter Jarret Martin allowed six 3rd inning runs despite giving up just 1 hit. It was his 6 walks that victimized him, along with the fact that the hit he allowed as a grand slam. Raydel Sanchez and Jose Dominguez combined to give up 3 runs in 4.2 innings of relief, while Juan Rodriguez finished the game with 2 hitless frames. The Loons were pretty limited at the plate as they connected on just one extra base hit, coming on a Angelo Songco double. Songco also singled on the day while Nick Akins had the only other multi-hit game with a pair of base knocks and a stolen base.
DSL – Off day
Coming up – It's going to be a very quiet Monday as the Lookouts, Quakes and Loons are all on All Star break, and the Isotopes have the day off. That being said Monday also marks the start of the Pioneer League so the Raptors will be playing their first game of the season, with Derek Cone scheduled to take the mound in the opener.
