Minor League Player of the Day – Chris Reed - 3 IP, 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 2 K's. Not a bad AA debut for Reed who is still building up his arm strength after his minor shoulder injury. Nice to see that he's gotten off to a strong start against the more advanced competition.
AAA – The Isotopes turned things around on Monday with a 5 - 1 win over the Express (Rangers). Stephen Fife had another masterful performance as he ran his scoreless inning streak to 13 innings with 7 more scoreless frames, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk. Ramon Troncoso followed with a shutout inning and Wil Ledezma gave up an unearned run in the 9th. Every player in the Albuquerque lineup had at least one hit expect for 9th place batter Tyler Henson, with Matt Angle, Josh Fields, and Brian Cavazos-Galvez recording two base knocks each. One of BCG's hits was a triple, while Jerry Sands doubled for his first extra base hit since his demotion.
AA – The Lookouts started Monday's game with 8 innings of no hit ball, and while the Generals scored 4 in the 9th Chattanooga was still able to come away with a 6 - 4 victory over Jackson (Mariners). Chris Reed made his AA debut is this game and was outstanding, throwing 3 hitless innings while walking a pair and striking out 2. He was pulled after 3 because he is still building his arm strength back up. His bullpen didn't miss a beat, however, as Geison Aguasviva stepped in and threw 3 perfect frames without the aid of a strikeout. Blake Johnson continued the no-hitter by facing the minimum over 2 innings, and things looked promising with Steve Ames on the mound in the 9th. But for whatever reason Ames wasn't on his game today as he allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, and luckily Logan Bawcom was able to come in for the save. At the plate Brahiam Maldonado accomplished the rare feat of hitting two triples in the game, while Griff Erickson went 3 for 4 with a double and a RBI. Jake Lemmerman, Pedro Baez, and Blake Smith all finished the game with two hits apiece.
HiA – The Quakes erupted for 7 runs in the 1st and never looked back in a 11 - 4 win over Lancaster (Astros). Jonathan Garcia continued his hot hitting with a 2-run double in the first, and Scott Wingo also had a big hit in the 1st frame with a 3-run homer. Chris Jacobs went 2 for 4 and added a homer of his own later in the game, while C.J. Retherford went deep for the 4th time in 3 days with a 2-run shot. Starter Angel Sanchez only pitched one inning in a scheduled shortened outing, and that allowed reliever Jordan Roberts to lower his ERA to 2.08 as he allowed just 1 run over a season high 4 frames. Ryan Acosta gave up 2 runs in relief, while Scott McGough threw a scoreless 9th.
LoA – The Loons were swept by the Whitecaps (Tigers) on Monday in 3 - 1 defeat, making their playoff chances for the 1st half even more slim. The good news is that even though starter Ryan O'Sullivan ran into some 1st inning trouble, he managed to settle down and throw 8 strong frames, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 8 without walking a batter. The Great Lakes offense was quiet, however, despite out-hitting West Michigan 9 to 5 as only one of their base knocks went for extra bases. That honor belonged to Joe Winker who went 2 for 4 with a double and a RBI. Pratt Maynard and Scott Schebler also had two hits apiece.
DSL – The Dominican Dodgers won their first game of the season with a 6 - 4 win over the Royals. Catcher Josmar Cordero, who was on the team last year, had the big game as he went 2 for 4 with a homer and 4 RBI's. Arce Rodriguez, another DSL veteran, also contributed with 3 hits. Starter Moises Tamarez., who is actually now in his 4th DSL season, did not allow an earned run over 4 innings. Ricardo De La Rosa recorded the save despite allowing a run in the 9th
Coming up – The Loons have the day off, but all the other teams will be in action including the Lookouts who will send Allen Webster to the mound. John Ely will start for the Isotopes, while the Quakes pitcher is TBD but very well could be Derek Cone.
Minor League Transactions – AA: Chris Withrow was placed on the DL which is why Chris Reed was called up to the Lookouts. HiA: Lots of moves for the Quakes on Monday, starting with the fact that Derek Cone and Robert Purpura were added to the team after spending all of 2012 so far in Extended Spring Training. Leon Landry was also activated from the bereavement list and Steve Cilladi was activated from the DL. To make room for all these guys, Greg Wilborn and Chris O'Brien were placed on the DL, while Carlos Frias and Casio Grider were removed from the roster. LoA: Jason West was placed on the DL and Ryan O'Sullivan was added back to the roster.
