Minor League Player of the Day – Ralston Cash - 6 IP, 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 1 BB, 6 K's. Cash couldn't have been more money on Friday as he gave the Loons just what they needed to end the team's 7 game losing streak. Not bad for his 3rd appearance of 2012.
AAA – The Isotopes pummeled the Redbirds (Cardinals) 12 to 0 on Friday behind a trio of big homers. Scott Van Slyke got things started in the 3rd inning with a 2-run blast, then Jerry Sands one upped him in the 6th with a 3-run bomb. Aaron Miles got into the act with a 3-run homer of his own in the 7th in what turned out to be a 3 for 5 day for the veteran. Tim Federowicz and Luis Cruz rounded out the action with 2 hits apiece. On the mound Fernando Nieve had his best outing of the season as he allowed just 4 hits over 7 scoreless frames. Wil Ledezma and Josh Wall finished the shutout with an inning each.
AA – The Lookouts also hit 3 homers on Friday, with one of them being the game winner in a 6 - 5 victory over the Biscuits (Rays) in 11 innings. Kyle Russell did what he does best in the 1st with a 2-run shot, and Nick Buss crushed a solo homer in the 2nd for his first of 3 hits. Blake Smith added a pair of doubles during the game, but it was Brahiam Maldonado who was credited for the game winner after going deep in the top of the 11th. On the mound Matt Magill struggled to the tune of 10 hits and 5 runs over 5.2 innings, but from there the bullpen went to work. Javy Solano pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, then Logan Bawcom came in and did not allow a hit over 2 frames while picking up the win. Steve Ames recorded the save with a 1-2-3 inning in the 11th.
HiA – Juan Uribe had a successful return to the field as he helped lead the Quakes to a 6 - 1 victory over the Mavericks (Mariners). Uribe went 2 for 3 with a triple and a homer in his first rehab game, and he played 3rd base for 6 innings. The incredible C.J. Retherford continued his homer barrage with his 8th dinger in 9 games, while Austin Gallagher went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI's. Brandon Martinez threw just one inning in scheduled shortened start, then newcomer Derek Cone came in and allowed the only run of the game over 2 frames. Jordan Roberts had another successful long relief appearance with 4 scoreless innings, and Scott McGough fired the final 2 frames and allowed just 1 hit.
LoA – Ralston Cash was magnificent on Friday as he threw 6 innings of 1-hit ball in a 2 - 0 win over the Silver Hawks (Dbacks). Cash only walked 1 and struck out 4 during his time on the mound, getting 10 groundouts vs. 2 flyouts. Michael Thomas followed with 2.2 shutout frames, then Yimi Garcia got the final out for the save. Thanks to the strong pitching Great Lakes didn't need much hitting as James Baldwin's triple and Jesse Bosnik's double were the only extra base hits of the game. Scott Schebler and Jose Arredondo both had a pair of hits and stole a base in the victory.
DSL – Even the Dominican Dodgers got into the act on Friday as they stung the Rays 6 to 1. Most of the runs the Dodgers scored were unearned thanks to 4 errors by the Rays, but Jose Luis Javier did have a pair of RBI's by going 2 for 4. Josmar Cordero raised his average to .480 with a double and a single, while Jonathan Linares went 3 for 4 with a two-bagger. Edison Bock started this game and allowed just 1 run despite 4 walks in 4 innings, and then the bullpen was brilliant. 18 year old Nelson Sandoval tossed a pair of hitless frames, and Jose Diaz saved the game with 2 scoreless innings.
Coming up – There should be some good arms throwing on Saturday as it should be Chris Reed's turn in the rotation for the Lookouts, while Angel Sanchez will start for the Quakes. Ryan O'Sullivan will get the call for the Loons, and Will Savage will try to record his first win in almost a month for the Isotopes.
