Dodgers 7/31/12 Minor League Report - Loons Turn Triple Play, but Lose 6th Straight

Minor League Player of the DayAndres Santiago (HiA) - 7 IP, 3 Hits, 0 Runs, 10 K's. Santiago recorded his 3rd 10+ strikeout game on Tuesday and is quietly having a very good season for the Quakes. For the season the 22 year old has more strikeouts than innings pitched, an ERA of 3.96, and a batting average against of .214. After the game on Tuesday, Andres received word that he had been promoted to AA.

AAA – The Isotopes lost to the Sounds (Brewers) 9 to 5 despite another homer from Jerry Sands. Sands led a big 1st inning for Albuquerque with his 19th bomb of the season, a 3-run shot, and later in the game Alex Castellanos added his 14th long ball of the year. Trent Oeltjen went 2 for 4 and his double was the team's only other extra base hit. On the mound Will Savage allowed 8 hits and 4 runs over 6 frames, and only struck out 1. Scott Rice really got cooked in relief as he gave up 5 hits and 5 runs (3 earned) in his only inning of work.

AA – The Lookouts used a 16 hit attack and a solid start from Allen Webster to shoot down the Stars (Brewers) 5 to 3. Webster tied a season high by throwing 7 innings and gave up just 1 earned run (3 total) on 6 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 7, and had a groundout to flyout ratio of 10 to 1. Steve Ames worked another scoreless inning to record his 13th save of the year. All 16 of the Chattanooga hits were singles, with 4 of them coming off the bat of Anthony Jackson. C.J. Retherford has 3 base knocks and a RBI, while Rafael Ynoa drove in two with a pair of hits.

HiA – Starter Andres Santiago was brilliant on Tuesday, but his bullpen blew the game and he didn't get much offensive support as the Quakes lost to the 66ers (Angels) 3 to 1. Santiago gave up just 3 hits over 7 shutout innings and struck out 10 batters, leaving the game with a slim 1 - 0 lead. Ryan O'Sullivan came into the game in the 8th and immediately gave up the lead, but it wasn't all his fault as both runs that scored against him were unearned due to a Charlie Mirabal fielding error. At the plate Joc Pederson got his average to an even .300 with a pair of singles, while Scott Wingo went a perfect 2 for 2 with 2 walks. Justin Sellers, playing in his first rehab game, led off and hit a double for the team's only extra base hit.

LoA – The Loons turned their 4th triple play in team history, but they continued to struggle at the plate as were shutout by the Hot Rods (Rays) 5 to 0 for their 6th straight loss. The triple play started on a low line drive to shortstop Darnell Sweeney with 2 on and nobody out. Sweeney caught the ball, threw to 2nd to double off the runner, then 2nd baseman Pedro Guerrero fired to 1st to complete the trifecta. There weren't any offensive players worth mentioning as the team was limited to just 4 singles. On the mound starter Duke von Schamann allowed 6 hits and 4 runs (2 earned) over 5 frames, while Yimi Garcia highlighted the pitching by striking out the side in a perfect frame.

Rookie Ogden – Starter Ross Stripling continued his dominance of the Pioneer League, but the Raptor bullpen couldn't match his success as Ogden fell to the Chukars (Royals) 7 to 4. Stripling started the game with 3 perfect innings with 3 K's to lower his ERA to 0.45, and as I've mentioned before the only reason his outings are so short is because of his heavy college workload this year. Kazuki Nishijima allowed 3 runs (1 earned) in 3 innings of relief, but then Craig Stem got crushed for 4 runs while recording just 2 outs. The Raptor offense in this game was spread around pretty evenly, although Eric Smith had the best game as he 2 for 4 with a triple, a RBI, and a stolen base. Jeremy Rathjen also had a pair of hits, a stolen base, and a RBI, while Corey Seager went 1 for 3 and made his 10th error of the season at shortstop.

Rookie Arizona – Off day

DSL – After being held scoreless for 9 innings, the Dominican Dodgers exploded for 6 runs in the 10th and defeated the Astros 6 to 1. Martin Rosario had the big 2-RBI double in the 10th, while both Melvin Santana and Rafael Gomez went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Starter Wascar Teodo tossed another outstanding game as he lowered his ERA to 0.87 with 6 innings of shutout ball, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 7. Geuris Alcantara recorded his 4th win in relief with 2 scoreless innings.

Coming upGarrett Gould will highlight Wednesday's pitching matchups as he throws for the Quakes, while Cole St. Clair is scheduled to make just the second start of his career for the Isotopes. Carlos Frias will take the mound for the Raptors, and Arismendy Ozoria will start for the Loons.

Minor League Transactions – AA: Andres Santiago and Eric Eadington were promoted to the Lookouts from the Quakes. No corresponding moves have been announced for Rancho.
