Dodgers 8/14/12 Minor League Report - Matt Magill Continues to Thrill

Matt Magill throwing for the Quakes in 2011

Minor League Player of the DayMatt Magill (AA) 7 IP, 0 Runs, 2 Hits, 1 BB, 11 K's – Lots of strong performances to choose from on Tuesday, but the final decision was between Magill and Joc Pederson. I decided to give the award to Matt and he truly did deserve it with another brilliant performance on the mound. His strikeout numbers are what really amaze me, and hopefully he can keep it up.

AAA – The Isotopes had a nice offensive game, but then again so did the Sky Sox as Colorado Springs (Rockies) defeated Albuquerque 12 to 9. Starter Derrick Loop tarnished his legacy a bit with his worst outing of the season as he allowed 8 hits, 4 runs, and 9 runs over just 4 frames. Unfortunately Cole St. Clair wasn't much better as he gave up the other 3 runs in relief, picking up the loss in the process. At the plate Scott Van Slyke was a perfect 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles, two walks, and two RBI's, while Jerry Sands had a based loaded triple as his batting average inches closer to .300. Josh Fields went 3 for 5, and Ivan De Jesus collected two singles and two runs over 5 at bats.

AA – Matt Magill had another magnificent game on Tuesday as he led the Lookouts to a 4 - 1 win over the Suns (Marlins). After having some mediocre outings as of late, Magill allowed just 2 hits over 7 shutout innings and struck 11 to win his 10th game of the year. Matt walked only 1, and threw 103 pitches for the night. The rehabbing Scott Elbert struck out both batters he faced in relief, then Chris Withrow was a bit wild but struck out 3 and recorded his second save of the season. Luis Nunez led the offense with a pair of doubles and a RBI, while Blake Smith had two singles for the only other multi-hit game. J.T. Wise also had a double, but that was about it for the hitting highlights.

HiA – The Quakes were down early on Tuesday, but they fought their way back and pulled out a 9 - 8 win over the Ports (A's). The rehabbing Ted Lilly got the game started nicely enough as he struck out 2 in a perfect inning, but then Angel Sanchez took over in the 2nd and got shelled for 7 hits and 7 runs which increased his ERA to 6.02. Jordan Roberts took over a few batters into the 3rd and allowed a run of his own, but then started a very strong run by the bullpen that lasted until the end of the game. The night culminated with Yimi Garcia recording his first California League save. At the plate Joc Pederson continued his torrid second half with two more homers to give him 15 for the season. He also singled and walked to finish the night a perfect 3 for 3. Pedro Baez also homered, but the other big story of the game was that Yasiel Puig made his Rancho debut. While he only had a single in 4 at bats, Puig did shown off some speed on the base-paths with a pair of stolen bases.

LoA – Off day

Rookie Ogden – The Raptors used strong pitching and timely hitting to defeat the Osprey (Dbacks) 9 to 2 on Tuesday. Starter Lindsey Caughel had by far the best start of his young career as he fired 7 shutout innings, striking out 6 and walking just 1. Sawil Gonzalez gave up a few runs in relief, but at that point it didn't matter as Ogden was so far aheard. Corey Seager went 2 for 4 with a two run triple and even swiped home on a double steal. Jeremy Rathjen also drove in two with a double, while Jesus Valdez and Bladimir Franco had 3 hits a piece.

Rookie Arizona – Starter Jonathan Martinez had his shortest and worst outing of the year on Tuesday, but his bullpen and offense picked him up in a 9 - 5 victory over the Royals. Martinez allowed all 5 runs on 7 hits and threw just 2.1 innings, walking two and striking out one. Samuel Taveras was very strong in relief, however, and he fired 4.2 innings of 3-hit ball to record the win. At the plate John Sgromolo recorded his 3rd multi-hit game in a row as he went 3 for 5 with a pair of double and 4 RBI's. John Cannon also doubled and drove in a pair, while Noel Cuevas had the only other notable game with 2 singles, 2 walks, 3 runs, and 2 stolen bases

DSL – With less than 2 weeks left in the season the 3rd place Dominican Dodgers are in must win territory, and they helped their cause on Tuesday with a 7 - 5 victory over the Rays. Jorky Infante was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate and drove in a run while Yensys Capellan went 2 for 4 with a 2-run homer to do most of the damage on offense. Josmar Cordero also had an RBI as he went 2 for 4 with a double. Starter Jose Augusto Diaz wasn't at his best as he allowed a season high 8 hits, but only 3 runs scored against him (2 earned) as he recorded the win. Bryan Munoz gave up the first two runs of his professional career in relief, while Geuris Alcantara picked up the two inning save.

Coming up – Everyone plays but the Arizona Dodgers on Wednesday, but there are only a few starters who have been announced as Aaron Miller will throw for the Lookouts and Jharel Cotton will take the mound for the Raptors.

Minor League Transactions – AAA: Angel Guzman was placed on the disabled list. AA: Outfielder Bobby Coyle and reliever Steve Smith were promoted from the Quakes. To make room on the roster Anthony Jackson was released and unfortunately Chris Reed was placed on the DL. HiA: Yasiel Puig was officially added to the roster, and Juan Noriega was promoted from the Loons. Ogden: Francisco Villa was promoted to the Raptors from Arizona, and Faustino Oguisten was sent back to Glendale.
