Yasiel Puig out for winter development program

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

Puig, the Dodgers' prized $42 million outfielder signed last June, will remain in Puerto Rico to continue playing in the winter leagues rather than join 12 prospects in Arizona in the Dodgers' annual development camp.

The Dodgers officially announced their winter development program details on Friday, and the sixth annual event will not include Yasiel Puig. The outfielder will remain with the Indios de Mayaguez, who are currently in the playoffs in the Puerto Rican winter league.

Twelve Dodgers minor leaguers will take part in the week-long event at Camelback Ranch in Arizona, and it's the same list as Wednesday: pitchers Steven Ames, Onelki Garcia, Zach Lee, Matt Magill, Rob Rasmussen, Chris Reed, Paco Rodriguez and Chris Withrow will be at the camp, along with catchers Tim Federowicz and Matt Wallach, and outfielders Jeremy Moore and Joc Pederson.

Manager Don Mattingly will work with the prospects at the event, as will several minor league coaches and coordinators. In addition to workouts and focusing on fundamentals, strength training and conditioning, the prospects will take part in seminars on media relations, diet, and major league travel.

The minor leaguers will also meet former Dodgers including Tommy Lasorda, Maury Wills, Ron Cey and Eric Karros.

Since starting the winter mini-camp in 2008, 36 players who have participated in the event have reached the majors.

Puig was 0-for-3 with a hit by pitch and a run scored on Thursday night for Indios.
