What about the last Braves-Dodgers NLDS?

Since the Braves moved out of the NL West in 1995, the Dodgers and Atlanta have played each other once in October. Let's take a look at what happened ...

Back in 1996, the Yankees defeated the Braves to win the World Series in six games. But to get to that point, Atlanta had to face the Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

The Braves (96-66) won the NL East and faced the NL Wild Card Dodgers (90-72) in the NLDS. Atlanta had the home-field advantage, but the format back then was 2-3 with the first two games on the road. But even with the first two games at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers were swept by the Braves 3-0, losing a pair of one-run games at home. Here were the results of the three games:

Game 1 - October 2 at Dodger Stadium

Braves 2, Dodgers 1 (10 innings)

John Smoltz, who won 24 games in 1996, started the first game against Ramon Martinez. Smoltz dominated and won the game thanks to Javy Lopez's homer in the 10th to break a 1-1 tie.

Game 2 - October 3 at Dodger Stadium

Braves 3, Dodgers 2

Greg Maddux faced off against Ismael Valdes in Game 2 and won. Ryan Klesko, Fred McGriff, and Jermaine Dye all hit homers to give the Braves a 2-0 advantage.

Game 3 - October 5 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium

Braves 5, Dodgers 2

In the third and final game of the series, Tom Glavine defeated Hideo Nomo to send the Braves to the NLCS. Atlanta took a 5-0 lead in the fourth, and never looked back. Los Angeles scored one in the seventh and eighth, but it wasn't enough to top the NL's number one seed.

Neither team hit much at all during the series. The Dodgers hit .147/.204/.221, and the Braves weren't much better at .180/.282/.382, but Atlanta hit five home runs compared to none for Los Angeles. Atlanta starting pitchers combined to give up two earned runs in 22⅔ innings.
