Dan Uggla might not make Braves NLDS roster, per report

Uggla, making $13 million in 2013 and under contract through 2015, might be left off the Braves' roster for the NLDS against the Dodgers.

The National League Division Series between the Dodgers and Braves will already be played without Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier's status remains in doubt. But the Dodgers aren't alone in making tough decisions involving high-priced players, as the Braves will reportedly leave second baseman Dan Uggla off the NLDS roster, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com:

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez met with some players regarding roster decisions after the team held a workout that was closed to the media on Tuesday at Turner Field. An industry source said Uggla was informed that he will not be part of the 25-man roster the Braves will use during their best-of-five NLDS matchup against the Dodgers.

Unlike Ethier, who is battling a sprained left ankle, Uggla is not injured, though the second baseman did have LASIK surgery in August to improve his vision.

Uggla hit .179/.309/.362 this season in 136 games, with 22 home runs, 77 walks and 171 strikeouts. Since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 28, Uggla has just one home run in 24 games, and is hitting .133/.325/.183 during that span.

Uggla's .179 batting average is tied with Rob Deer (1991) for the lowest batting average of the live ball era (1920-present) among players with enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title. Both Deer and Uggla had 80 hits in 448 at-bats in their full seasons of futility.

As noted by Ben Duronio of Talking Chop, "Uggla was terrible this year offensively, which is the only facet of his game which is useful."

NLDS rosters are due on Thursday morning at 7 a.m. PT.

As Bowman reported, Elliot Johnson will start at second base for the Braves, and if Uggla is left off the NLDS roster Atlanta might choose to have 12 pitchers.
