Williams to Nats
Tim Wallach isn't the only National League West third base coach in demand for open managerial jobs. It appears is set to leave his coaches box with the Diamondbacks for the open managerial job with the Nationals, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, though it isn't likely to be announced until after the World Series.
The Giants on Friday finalized their head-scratcher of a contract with Tim Lincecum, guaranteeing $35 million over two years to the right-hander who over the last two years hasn't been as good as soon to be free agent Ricky Nolasco. Per the Associated Press, Lincecum will be paid $17 million in 2014 and $18 million in 2015 and can earn various bonuses, such as $250,000 each season for each of 210 and 220 innings pitched.
On Wednesday Grant Brisbee at McCovey Chronicles looked at video of Lincecum through the years to see if he could spot the differences.
Gibson's future in Arizona
Arizona manager Kirk Gibson will have to fill between three and five spots on his coaching staff and, since his options for 2015 and 2016 were declined, will head into 2014 as a lame duck manager, as Don Mattingly did with the Dodgers in 2013 (though Mattingly had an option which has vested). Piecoro talked to Gibson Wednesday:
"It’s just like when I was a player. You go up for a contract, you disagree. When you have the chance to go to arbitration, you go to arbitration, and when the arbitrator rules, it’s over. Then you’ve got a chance to be a free agent and then it’s over. Things come and go. I don’t get bogged down by stuff. It doesn’t change anything for me."
Renteria in demand
Padres bench coach Rick Renteria has been on the Cubs' radar for their managerial opening for some time, and word came Thursday that he also interviewed for the top bench vacancy with the Mariners.
In other San Diego news, the Padres designated left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne and somebody named Colt Hynes for assignment, and reinstated pitchers Joe Wieland and Cory Luebke from the 60-day disabled list. Gaslamp Ball has more info on the moves.
